Idk if it depends on the state but a property owner can ask the police to patrol their property and watch for illegal activity. I don’t think that’s the case in this situation though.

I think he's wrong on patrolling private property. But assuming he's burgling and demanding ID is the problem here. Just have a conversation, make notes, take a photo move on.

He is justifiably angry, and he's angry at you because you aren't communicating that you are backing off. Change your tone from a pushy one to get him to calm and listen. And if you are backing off Stong's position stand him down and stop him engaging, he's the catalyst for the anger and fear so remove him. Ge missed it at the time but you told him you are going to get the owner to ID you instead. That would be a breach on yhe owners part, and they could well be intimidated by police harassment or failure to respond if he refuses you.
