    Thank you. I didn't need to use my Smart Key reset tool afterall. All I had to do was find the gap that the new key wasn't installed all the way in to the lock.

    Installed new lock box, reset code, lock won’t open! I tried this and I can feel the ups and downs indicating the code is what I just set it to 20 minutes ago, but my lock still won’t open. I am thinking it’s a defective lock box :(

    Various eras of this lock from old to new can be a little different. On the newer version of this lock you may need to move all of the wheels 2 or 3 times each!

    I felt a big pull up on each and it was the number after the number I felt it on. So if I felt a big pull up on 1, it was actually 2.

    When you get to a rekey and the tenant didn’t leave the old key, old key is lost or the property has multiple same locksets, but all different keys. In order to rekey the lock, you must have a way to turn the core over. So, you can use the existing keys if they have them. You can pick each lock over individually which is time consuming or you can shim them. It’s very common for home owners and renters to buy their locks and install them themselves, so they go to the big box store and buy the same finish/style locks. However, the keys won’t always match, so when the tenant moves out or the house is sold, the new tenant has the key to the front door, but the rest of the home is mismatched and they do not always get all of the 2-4 keys.

    I'm new to the lock sport, and other videos have rings for a rapid fire. Then they file down the end. Have you used the bump rings? And if so did you file the key down? Thank you

    I have three store bought warded locks (I bought for practice). Two of them warded keys will not work on. One lock is over sized (the skeleton warded key doesn't even touch the in sides of the lock). The othet lock is so tight the warded keys bend, I've used warded by-pass keys from three separate companies with similar results, even the key it came with takes a lot of "umpf" to get to work.

    How to Disassemble a Defiant Doorknob? turn the knob and it falls apart lol. yes I'm exaggerating a little but i avoid Defiants unless I have to match a finish like polished brass or existing locks or the dreaded budget. High tech version of this situation is Milocks. Not my first choice 😅

    These are my nightmare. My staff constantly had trouble with the rekeying often so the cradles were necessary. I have had really bad luck with the cradles and the whole "smart Lock" system. BOTH colors gave us headaches. Our staff all assumed the red one was better but that might have been anecdotal and the fact we couldn't buy another red one (conspiracy theories). Ikea flatbox furniture has better instructions. Written steps would have been nice than these pictoglyphs. Making multiple trips to the maintenance shop to get tools and the cradle negates any time saved by simply repinning. And the added benefit being able to master key everything made my decision to go back to dumb locks easy. Now my guys don't have to grab and return keys between work orders. To me, Smart Lock was another false promise to make my job easier. Like LED light bulbs last 25 years so the next bulb you change will be the last before retirement...

    Great video. I stumbled on this because a family member wants me to master her locks which are Defiants lol. 30 years of being a super/property manager and I've used Schlage, Arrow, Sargent, and of course Kwikset (which I assumed was the cheapest brand I could master or rekey) . And if I was amazed that the defiant lock could be done I was FLOORED when I saw lock #2 was a Brinks!!! Kudos. I also liked the way he assigned genders to the parts. I have called parts bastards and SOBs but never "him" 😅

    One note to everyone Kwikset pin tumblers do not work with Defiant cores as they are different sizes than Defiant pins.. if you are rekeying Defiant locks get the proper pins for that lock.. then the keying will go smoothly . thank you.

  • @LockandKilo
    @LockandKilo23 күн бұрын

    Master Pins will look like shorter versions of your top pins. They will basically be extra pins in the top chambers. If you pull the plug without a key, you may even find them on top of your bottom pins, you will notice flat pins on top of your beveled ones.

    I'm kinda glad I'm a locksmith at a government facility and not with the public at large. I feel like half of the job is proving ownership. I get to skip that half entirely. Everything inside the building is mine to service, and nothing outside of it. It's a very convenient dividing line.

    I give a range for pricing because you never know what other additional work may need to be done. It also weeds out the stingy customers that waste your time. A cheap locksmith may not be good, but a good locksmith isn't cheap!

    Wow! At 5:58 is the info I needed ... my lock set didn't have the 2 spring tabs as you show in the first 5 minutes, and it turns out your instructions at 5:58 to insert my key and rotate the lock 180 degrees did the trick instantly! I watched 3 other videos all explaining how to use the Kwikset tool (or 2 screwdrivers) but of course neither would work for me ... Thanks!

    These are useful for Metal doors that cannot be chiseled. Also, if you have a narrow wooden door or you the installer may not have a chisel or be comfortable using a chisel, possibly a fear of splitting the door for example.. Many doors are sold pre-cut, some latches are recessed, some are not. So, this gives a DIY individual an easy option. But, most of the time you find these on metal door applications :)

    I have a handful of videos on rekeying Kwiksets, I tried saving time on these later videos by just describing various ways on removal. Once the channel exploded and more than a handful of people started finding it, I realized I needed to go wayyy more in depth haha This was a response to a question and I happened to have an old scrap one on hand!
