Great tip, I actually do the same thing to fix stripped out screws, I also put a drop of wood glue as well for extra insurance

Yeah, was going to say a small bit of wood glue so there is less potential for the skewer to be a weak point since it'd want to come out if something stuck the door hard enough to pull on the screw that might be holding onto the skewer.

That's a good point! On the majority of strikes I come across they all use the tiny screws that came with the lockset, so I normally replace them with 2 1/2's that sink in deeper and grab. But, that is definitely a good idea! You guys always have my back here in the comments with these pro tips! Respect lol

My experience is as a custom door carpenter, not a locksmith. That said, I also like bamboo for small screw holes. I drill out larger holes to 3/8" and use 3/8" poplar dowels for the plug. I always use glue, because I have seen many plugs pull out of holes, screws and all. This is not likely to be an issue in the case of a striker, but it is a problem with hinges. In extreme cases, I have had to cut full width splines into door edges to repair the damage done by very old, or poorly installed mortice locks. I got out of that line of work when my back got tired of wrestling huge entry doors on and off horses for final fitting.

Yeah! I will do another on hinges when I find one stripped out on those. I should've titled this one for strikes haha Often times on strikes people use the small screws that come with the lock set, so usually a skewer and a longer screw handles these little jobs. Cost effective and quick for small jobs like strikes. Hinges actually hold weight, especially the top hinge, so a dowel is smart there! The bigger it gets a dowel and some glue may be better, this was just for those simple strike replacements. I have watched guys struggle to line them up and I toss them a skewer lol

@@LockandKilo Yep, all true. If you do get into hinges, I hope you will mention using hinge side security bolts. Those, and long screws into the jamb side are (IMO) the cheapest way to "harden" up an entry door to resist "kick ins". I used to install them with every door as part of my exorbitant Beverly Hills price.

@@RAkers-tu1ey Yeah, video [89] I talk about the longer screws and security strikes for kick-in prevention. I can imagine the paychecks working in Beverly Hills haha... I worked in a celebrity city here in Cali and the tips alone paid my rent and car payment haha I have some plans for videos in the future for hinges, I am waiting to find the perfect door for it!

Well I have to admit that is a pretty smart diy idea, I’ve got some new videos coming down the pipe too soon. Viewership and so are subscribers, and yours are climbing too so what’s the next giveaway mark for the channel?

I have been contemplating that! I was planning on a 500 giveaway, but it climbed so fast I am thinking of some other ways to squeeze it in there haha I have been so loaded down with work and getting through so many emails and writing down so many response videos I have to get to I totally didn't notice how quick I am nearly to 500!!! These tiny response videos are simple to do, I have dozens asking about Master Key Systems, Control Key making, Installs etc.. I have been trying to figure out how to lay those ones out lately. Those types of videos I want to layout clearly, simply and in depth as possible, so I am planning on doing mini series of those in the future! It's so tough sometimes to speak to all levels of the trade in those kind of videos, so I am spending extra time to make sure they don't go over any heads, or undersell info ya know.

I use golf tees for the door hinges and skewers for the plates. When I do it I always put wood glue on them. Am I wasting my time adding the glue?

As a former door hanger, I would say "no", unless the tees are painted or clear finished (a lot of them are). I personally think Tees are a bit too hard, and are prone to have very poor grain which causes steep angle splitting. I prefer straight grain poplar dowels if the holes are too big for the bamboo. I knew a lot of guys who would just use several of the bamboo skewers to fill the hole, driving them in with a hammer, and use lots of glue. I have also seen this method fail on hinges holding heavy entry doors. Likely in most cases, none of this matters too much.
