[95] Kwikset Smart Lock Knob Opened with a Knife! - Destructive

This is a common attack used by burglars to unlock many (not all) Kwikset Doorknobs! This can also be used when you come across certain Kwikset Smart Locks on Lock-Out calls!
This is labeled a DESTRUCTIVE METHOD, as you use a sharp tool to pry the cylinder.
But if you are very careful and use masking tape you can limit the cosmetic damage and once you unlock the door you can pop the cylinder back inside!

I for one was quite happy to see you switch to the butter knife (as I kept looking at all the scars on my left hand from similar shenanigans) Definitely helpful to know both from a locksmith side, and a home safety side!

Yeah, I realized this is harder to do with the knob in your hand lol I was worried it would pop at the camera, normally on a door you get better leverage and this method takes 3 seconds with minimal damage. You can also cut a blank with 1 cut beyond MACS, square off the cut and insert it into the lock, attach a pair of vice grips to the key bow and use a slide hammer to remove these as well. This method is used by burglars, so it's always best to lock the deadbolt. This video was made to kind of show how easy someone can break in as they usually will carry a pocket knife, as well as how to use this exploit on Smart Locks for those in the trade lol

Ha, Smartkeys can indeed be a nightmare to deal with this. Personally, if we’re faced with a lockout involving one, I’d first try to shim the latch using the credit card technique, and if that didn’t work and it was Grade 3 knob,, I’d attempt to manipulate the tab on at the base of the spindle with the Kwikset bypass wire tool through the hole concealed by the rose cover.

The Locktech is my go-to for these anymore lol... the SC1 version will eventually annoy me until they make a blank for it. I have seen people drill these when they could've just done this tho haha

Very cool method incase the locktec isn't available. Just wanted to mention that some of the old school weiser/kwikset knobs with the ring open a bit differently (not the smartlock version, I'm talking pre smartlock) There is the one that you must pull the "spindle" part in the back and then while doing that, rotate the plug to either 4:00 or 10:00 position, then pull the plug out. Those ones are fun haha Also there is an even rarer version I've seen that requires you to remove a circlip behind the knob that holds the squared spindle in, remove the spindle, then you have to unscrew the core from the back of the knob... those ones can be a bit tricky, especially if you get it mixed up with one of the other kinds. That's the main reason I'm mentioning, because when I first came across the other versions, i was so confused until I learned they were different, even though they also have that ring cut out shape on the front Great tips, thank you again for your hard work with these awesome videos! :)

Yeah! The link to video [11] I show a version of the cylinder that has to be rotated to remove! You find those on a lot of HUD homes! Slide Hammers are honestly the ultimate Smart Lock defeater haha Thanks for the feedback! Comments like this motivate me to keep going! I also have nobody in my everyday interactions to talk locks with, so it has been pretty cool to get so many emails with feedback and questions, it also helps me keep sharp in the field!

I think there’s knob pullers still available that pluck that out, but the one I used to see a lot of was the slide hammer puller that you run a screw into the keyway and the slide hammer went over the screw head and it just popped the cylinder housing right out. Btw, some folks that are thinking about trying this, you might double check that cylinder housing diameter as it could be the Titan/ Max version and you’ll definitely struggle getting that off with these methods 😂. Great tip. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, mostly this is just a method for Smart Locks as Kwikset's can usually be picked quickly lol The knob pullers cost like $70.00US when you can buy a Harbor Freight Slide Hammer, Vice Grips and cut a key beyond macs to use as a puller instead for under $35.00 total lol I never use the screw method, I just cut the blank beyond macs and square it off real quick with a flat file. But, yeah, that's why I mentioned it works on many, but not all lol. Some clones can be annoying for this method but, with enough prying and effort anything is possible... it would just be a lot more destructive. Almost every Smart Lock version they seem to just be this simple concept... Titans are definitely a fun time here haha Also, I partly made this video to show people the flaws in some of these locks and why they should always lock their deadbolt.

@@LockandKilo I hear ya. I never wanted to spend that much on those pullers. The Schlage knob puller one maybe, but I’ll wait til I find a bargain price. Every tip helps. Thanks for sharing.

@@LockandKilo great job on this video, I agree about the knob vs. deadbolt and will probably try your beyond MACS key pulling trick on a throwaway lock soon. Fun stuff-thanks for sharing 😊🙏

I have one of the old knob pullers that works by using a key with a notch to engage the pins, then uses a screw to pull the cylinder holder out the front of the lock. I believe that it was made by A-1. I've used it on older Kwiksets, but not on any of the smartkeys yet... It works quite well on the regular Kwikset locks, typically with no damage...

Yeah, those work as well! I use a similar technique where I will cut a key beyond its MACS and square the cuts, then use a home-made slide hammer and vice grips lol I only ever used that on Smart Locks as a rookie as that method works and many locks in destructive fashion lol

In this video I was trying to be careful not to have the cylinder fly into my camera or anything haha Plus, I was trying to do it slow for the video, normally if done on a door quickly with this method it takes a few seconds and can cause minimal damage. Doing it slow like this caused more damage lol Partly, I wanted to show others why it's important to always lock your deadbolt as I touch on in the end so, that's why I went with the knife attack. A1 makes a puller tool for the Kwikset's and Schlage F Series. But, you can make a homemade version with vice grips and a blank as well.
