What I’ve learned both from picking a defiant lock myself and watching this video is that spool pins are actually pro pick, not anti pick. They work against raking, but as you said, they’re a great indicator in single pin picking. I think serrated pins are probably more confusing to deal with.

  • @LockandKilo

Spool Pins are best used with 1 or 2 tops. Usually on a Kwikset/Defiant they are less useful than on a Schlage for instance. Usually on a Schlage, you will find when they place 1 or 2 spools it will give someone raking the lock more trouble. I have a video where I put 5 spools in a defiant to show an example of how it works against the theory that it would make it more secure.

@@LockandKilo right, 5 spools just means every pin gives more feedback. Lockpicking lawyer had one where he had all spools aside from one standard for stabilization, and once he had the standard pin out of the way, he could basically just set every pin. If every pin is a spool, it’s easy to keep set pins above the sheer line, plus you can easily tell if you’ve overset a pin. I’m speaking from a small amount of experience lol. But this is just what I can tell so far from my small experience and from videos. Anyway, I’m gonna go find your video as well. You deserve the view and it’s good to get this stuff explained by a few different people. I’m really considering this locksmithing thing.

The hobby vise is $15 or at least was on my last trip to Harbor Freight as I have the same one. And have seen the same padlock story Walmart the key style is very much an M1 style key even though for most keys for it are supposed to be a Viro/brinks key which is commonly a VR5 4 pin. But doesn’t always seem to be the case.

Yeah, I couldn't remember the price, that sounds about right, after tax I think it was just under $20. I didn't even notice until I made this video that it used the M1 blank lol, as I held it to the camera to check the bitting I realized it was an M1.

@@LockandKilo the shape of the head of the key should have been a dead giveaway. This is another way I train myself especially when learning my bump keys, having spent over 2 years with them. Knowledge breeds familiarity a man once said, and knowledge is power.

@@BelmontClan I honestly didn't pay much attention to the keys when I opened it, when I pickup locks strictly to pick I just leave the keys in the package most of the time. You can't always go off the shape of the bow when trying to identify keys, but the blade as I held it to the camera I realized was an M1 lol This was a one pass video, so I just kind of chalked it up to a mental note and then noticed the core soon after as I began to pick... I hesitated when I fell into the false set, I almost mentioned this there but, I chose to not ramble on haha

@@LockandKilo We all have our ways of training ourselves, just like when salvaging through things thrown out I know what I’m looking for, such as today my innkeepers were throwing away a collection of things, I found a tube of graphite lubricant, $1 in pennies several bottles of hand sanitizer and sealed mouthwash and cough drops and aspirin and thread. As we know graphite is a lubricant for locks and can be a little pricy. And pennies make dollars and dollars make sense as the saying goes. Just like in the past I’ve scavenged for street sweeper bristles to make tools from, and making plastic door shims from soda bottles. We learn much by observation and attention to detail. That’s my day so far I spent 10 minutes scavenging and made $1. How’s your day going?

@@BelmontClan Yeah, many keys have similar bows, so looking down the profile of the blade is always best! People will bring in many keys that are all Y11 for instance, but the bows will not look alike at all. It's funny because looking back at this video the blade is clearly an M1, I just wasn't focused on them as they were more of an after thought I used to show the lock worked lol Graphite powder is extremely messy, that's why I think most locksmith's refuse to use it. Especially on light colored doors and carpet below them... it's just a hassle to use it. Autopart stores toss a lot of returned/broken parts in their trash. So, you can sometimes go into them and ask for salvage. They will have a ton of parts you can use to make into bypass, tensioners, picks etc.. I have found some gems doing that!
