Color/finish degradation is the most common reason that I run into... Exterior locks finish degradation obviously is faster, and I've run across where someone has replaced the some exterior knobsets and not all of them, and used a different brand, ending up with multiple keys that are not compatible, etc. I recently did a rekey/ replace for a guy who had just purchased a property that used 21 knobsets, 21 deadbolts (6 double cylinder), and needed reboring 10 doors due to bad prep. They wanted all keyed alike,, plus master keying on a cottage on the property that folks could stay with them, use their issued keys with no other access.. That was a very long day indeed. I should have rented the cottage myself for the night...

Man, that sounds like a day! Those massive properties can make ya clear your schedule sometimes! It's always fun to fix bad prep work... a few times I had to fix some pretty bad jobs rookies did at shops I worked at in the past... felt less like a Locksmith and more like a magician sometimes lol I recently rekeyed a home with 24 locks, but at least they were all compatible. Took me a little over an hour because the client wanted to chat about how cool he thought my job was during half the job haha

The pricing is subject to your area lol Here in California rekey rates hover around $10-$13 per cylinder. Small town shops sometimes charge less than metro shops. It all depends on your bottom line in the end! Mobile vs Brick and Mortar plays a big factor in pricing as well!

Ok. I got a good one for you to answer How do you key locks to allow a master key for all locks And “slave” keys that would only open 1 lock say in a set of 4-6 locks

This is a question I get everyday! I have been working on getting a video done on that. I have been trying to make a video that doesn't drag on too long, so I may end up putting a Master Key series of videos up soon!

The magic is knowing what the master key bitting will be, and what the individual bitting will be. The rest is mathematics...
