Rocky Creek Homestead

Rocky Creek Homestead

After battling Psoriasis for years, I discovered the power of quality food and its positive impact on my skin condition. This sparked my desire to raise my own quality food. So come along with our Family as we transition from urban living to small self sustaining family farm. Learn from both our successes and failures in hopes it may inspire others to try new things. We entered into this journey with no prior experience and hope to provide many laughs and learning experiences. We learned most of how to do what were doing from watching others and hope to be able to provide a similar learning opportunity to anyone else who may benefit from this. Thank you for coming along with us on this journey and we hope it is enjoyable for you and your family.

For those who have an Instant Pot, I put whatever number of eggs in with the trivet under them, cook them on low pressure for 3 minutes and allow it to release the pressure on it's own. The eggs are perfect every time. Super easy to peel as well. Oftentimes, I have 2 pieces total of shell from one egg!

That powder inside is instant yeast. Flies love sweet add sugar ,honey ,sweet juice etc. into a large jar water.1/2way up add 1/2 top of soda bottle turn the top part into the jar or cut the bottom half of a gallon of water or juice bottle. Tape or use putty to secure the top to the bottom of the jar or bottle so they could go in but they can’t get out that’s the key. I saved a piece of screen like a funnel and i use that.

Hope your first experience goes well. This feed worked well, but sourcing the ingredients became increasingly difficult. If these are your first chickens, it may not be a bad idea to just start with a quality prepared feed until you’ve gotten everyone settled and then transition to a custom feed. Just a thought if you have a hard time getting all the items or it proves to be very expensive. Our local mill closed down after over 100 years, along with inflation, the custom feed idea has been hard to sustain

I am willing to pay more for a product if it means better customer service. For example, we buy our home appliances from a local appliance store that services what they sell AND is the local parts supplier for the brands they sell. I pay more to buy from them because I know they will service the appliances.

Butchered just over 5 weeks all dressed over 5 lbs some were over 6 lbs. one died late others got wet belly that I caught and butchered before they died. Thanks for sharing. I originally bought broiler feed when I got my first feed and an older man told me he always raised his chickens on the same feed no matter if they’re for meat or eggs. I decided to give it a try and it worked just fine. It does result in a slower grow out but I do think the chickens seem healthier as a result

  • @RockyCreekHomestead

I know that can seem odd to some, but I think it’s important to know where your food comes from and to give them the best life possible while they’re here. Being naive to the treatment of some commercially produced meat sources doesn’t change the reality of how they’re being treated. I don’t see a reason to treat an animal less just because they’re a source of food for the family.
