We Captured It! Was it a BEAR that tried to get our PIGS?

Last year we lost a pig to a black bear attack. We noticed some signs recently that makes me believe it was back. Well we caught some video footage of what’s been lurking on the property. Come along as we share what we saw. We thank you for watching.#blackbear #reolink #homestead

***********ROCKY CREEK HOMESTEAD****************
After battling Psoriasis for years, I discovered the power of quality food and its positive impact on my skin condition. This sparked my desire to raise my own quality food. So come along with our Family as we transition from urban living to small self sustaining family farm. Learn from both our successes and failures in hopes it may inspire others to try new things. We entered into this journey with no prior experience and hope to provide many laughs and learning experiences. We learned most of how to do what were doing from watching others and hope to be able to provide a similar learning opportunity to anyone else who may benefit from this. Thank you for coming along with us on this journey and we hope it is enjoyable for you and your family.

Stan, glad you got confirmation on the bear(s) in your area and that they haven't gone towards to the pens for now. I can't imagine having to think about that when it comes to homesteading. We have deer and coyotes in our area (KY) but the coyotes stay in the woods for the most part. Brother your work ethic is second to none. I hear so many people say they don't have time to even garden let alone homestead and I tell them they have the time and it's just a matter of making it a priority. Keep moving the homestead forward...excited to see your garden this year. As always, stay safe my friend.

Thanks buddy. Coyotes have been on the rise in our area but fortunately I haven’t dealt with them on my property yet. A friend of mine about 30 minutes away had 2 coyotes try to get his dog recently. I foresee more electric on our property in the future to address these concerns.

Electric fencing is amazing for keeping pray away, So many of our neighbors lost there chickens to pray animals, and they're not far from us. We haven't lost one. A cat disappeared we suspect was a coyote, I've never contained cats I want them to hunt mice.

It has certainly proven to be a great addition to the pig area. We have coyotes but thankfully I’ve not personally had to deal with them yet. I’d honestly rather deal with a bear than a pack of coyotes around my animals

A lot of bears we get at the tannery, have bird shot just under the skin. People use it to deter bears from messing with their gardens/ animals.

I’ve heard of that. There’s also some rubber shotgun shells you can use as well. A friend of mine that has a huge farm recommended them if needed

@@RockyCreekHomestead I wish more people would invest in the rubber shot. When we hit steel shot it really messes up our fleshing wheels, and I'd hate to think what lead shot could do to an animal's health in the long run.

Yea neither did I. We’re in VA. A friend of mine who does animal control type work said although it’s rare, some black bears may resort to more meat eating as they near hibernation if they sense they haven’t gotten enough stored fat. Good thing is we haven’t had an issue since

Black bears are omnivores and a friend of mine who works in a wildlife field said a bear will increase its meat to plant ratio closer to hibernation as it’s a longer digestion process. He said as it gets closer to the cold is when there’s a greater concern for my livestock. There’s lots of wild food around our area but I think some bears have just becomes accustomed to trash diving and other easily accessible food sources created by people. Other than being diligent and proactive on our property, I’m not sure there’s much we can do.

I'm kind of glad to be out here in the midwest where the biggest thing I have to worry about currently is a coyote 😅 Though there have been some bears seen over the past few years. Hope you guys stay safe! Thanks again for the pig info. I'm slowly becoming more convinced that when I eventually do get around to raising pigs, it may well be some of Mater's cousins

Horses can't have clover in the hay because of a mold issue and horse tail in the hay can be deadly for horses. I have a goat and 2 horses together, I find the goat eats all the clover and any other Naraly weeds in the hay. As long as I give them enough to pick through and eat what they want I've never had a problem. I find the problem that come from horses eating things in the hay they shouldn't comes from only giving them an exact amount per day. Some people get out a scale and only put the amount the horse should eat that day, of course they're going to eat all of it. I'd rather give them hay that hasn't been sprayed for weeds but I give them twice as much as they need so they can pick trough it 😊. A horse, or any animal, will eat anything if its starving.

Really great information there and it makes perfect sense. I have read many articles talking about weighing hay so I can see what you’re saying. Thanks for sharing so I and others can learn from it. Madison has been pushing for a mini horse. I told her I’m not opposed but it definitely isn’t happening until I can get some trees cleared and an actual small barn of some type put up
