***********ROCKY CREEK HOMESTEAD****************
After battling Psoriasis for years, I discovered the power of quality food and its positive impact on my skin condition. This sparked my desire to raise my own quality food. So come along with our Family as we transition from urban living to small self sustaining family farm. Learn from both our successes and failures in hopes it may inspire others to try new things. We entered into this journey with no prior experience and hope to provide many laughs and learning experiences. We learned most of how to do what were doing from watching others and hope to be able to provide a similar learning opportunity to anyone else who may benefit from this. Thank you for coming along with us on this journey and we hope it is enjoyable for you and your family.

    I’m converting my shed which is actually about the size of a small garage into a chicken coop I’ve never worked so hard in my life to modify everything to keep my chickens safe.

    Putting the 3" side for their feet will help prevent frostbite since they can cover their feet with their feathers.

    You should flip those so they’re roosting on the winds side. Better for them.

    It’s been a huge learning curve, but I’m glad I finally have it going. I hope to have other options available in the next month or two. I wanted to take it slow to make sure I did it right. Thanks

    Stan, thanks for the insights on the chicken coop and roosting bars. We don't have animals yet, waiting until we move/retire in TN, and then I'll reference back to your videos. Happy for you to be adding the merchandise and I'm sure you'll figure it out just fine. I'll snag a hat sometime soon...can't get any better than a pig with the 'thin blue line'. Hope all is well, take care my friend, and, as always, stay safe!

    Thanks buddy. You’ll need to let us know when you’ve migrated to the neighboring state of TN. We travel through there to go visit family.

    Good idea making the holding boards taller. Mine is barely taller than the roosting bar and they do knock it off sometimes.

    Woohoo! Id be more than happy to snag up and wear some Rocky creek merch! I’m a fan of that tie dye t shirt you have with the pig on it if you were looking for some t shirt ideas to add lol. Huge fan of the local place helping out with this. Small businesses are seriously the best for unique projects. Also, “Looks like somebody sneezed, lost their egg”… I don’t even understand how these random eggs get out of the nest boxes sometimes lol, but they do!

    Thanks for the feedback. I do plan to put tye dye on there as I’m always a fan of anything tye dye. I think my broody hen is causing some issues with chickens laying. That favorite box taken is like the favorite stall in the bathroom being taken, creates panic 😂

    I watched your video on the new waterers I like them and I ordered some but you had some feeders and they were too big they had smaller ones with some type of little crossbar in them that you could put into a bucket and I couldn't figure out how the chicken could get their head in there with this light t-bar plug that they put in maybe you can explain that on one of your videos that would be nice thank you they're called Mikiroy feeders. Thank you

    We’ve changed up our feeders quite a bit over the years. We’ve stayed committed to the waterer though as we’ve been very pleased with it. We’ve primarily just been feeding the chickens in rubber bowls. We eventually want to get a feeder from Coopworx but they’re pricey. Eventually that’s the route we plan to go with our feeder though

    Hey Stan I got a question. How did you get your chickens to use their roosting poles? We have 14 chickens that are about 15 weeks old and they still do not roost. Every night they sleep on the ground in their run. Can you help me out any??

  • @RockyCreekHomestead

    @RockyCreekHomestead

    Жыл бұрын

    When I raise new chickens, they usually won’t go in the coop and sleep huddled on the ground in the run. I wait until it’s dark and I pick them up and put them in the coop on the roosting bars. They don’t see well in the dark and usually give me no issues when moving them. I then let them out later in the morning than usual. Usually after a few days of doing this, at a minimum they start going into the coop at night with the roosting bar usage following. Once in a while I have a rogue chicken who insists on sleeping on the floor. I hope that helps.
