***********ROCKY CREEK HOMESTEAD****************
After battling Psoriasis for years, I discovered the power of quality food and its positive impact on my skin condition. This sparked my desire to raise my own quality food. So come along with our Family as we transition from urban living to small self sustaining family farm. Learn from both our successes and failures in hopes it may inspire others to try new things. We entered into this journey with no prior experience and hope to provide many laughs and learning experiences. We learned most of how to do what were doing from watching others and hope to be able to provide a similar learning opportunity to anyone else who may benefit from this. Thank you for coming along with us on this journey and we hope it is enjoyable for you and your family.

Stan, it's great to see some growth coming from the greenhouse! One of the things I appreciate about your approach to homesteading is exactly what you were explaining towards the end of your video. Too many people make all kinds of excuses as to why they can't do it and your 'street smart' approach proves that it doesn't take a bunch of money, prior experience, or a tractor to produce some food. Like most anything else...just start somewhere and have a learning posture so that you can take what you observe/learn this year and apply to your garden next year. My garden(s) and experiences are not going to be like yours but it doesn't mean it's not a success. Appreciate you, buddy, and as always, stay safe!

Thanks buddy. I’m followed by people all over the world that have such different climates and growing season and it amazes me when some people are condescending when provided what I guess they think is advice. I’ve learned a lot from many great people I’ve networked with on here and for them I’m thankful. Everyone’s situation wether finances, climates, time etc., are all different so you’re absolutely right that our gardens will be different. Great open minded people such as yourself is why I love being on here and chatting with you. Thanks again and wishing you best through this growing season

Your garden and plants are looking nice. I’m surprised that you are having that much results in a small greenhouse outside with no heat mats or grow lights. Most people make it sound like you need all of those things to grow your seedlings for the garden. Love to see that low tech/low cost can still be very productive! Thanks for the update!

Absolutely. I’m sure all those things do help but they’re not an absolute necessity. I rarely use fertilizer other than my rabbit manure and have never tested my soil 😂. Not saying that’s the way to go but it’s working so far. I think the biggest mistake is not trying first. If you fail then maybe reevaluate what maybe could’ve fixed it

Yes it does. I can’t wait to have everything established in the ground an watch it take off. It’s amazing how much the stuff grows in a day or two in the early stages.

Thanks, I grew up in a trailer park as a younger kid and I remember the gentleman who lived behind us only grew a couple watermelon plants every year and they were so delicious. I don’t remember much of that early time of my life but I vividly remember being mesmerized by the small watermelon patch he grew.

Hey Stan, looking forward to your garden this year. So far I have onions and garlic going good. My strawberries are blooming that I planted in a plastic kiddie pool. I ate one of the radish that I’m growing today..even my Rottie puppy ate a bite haha. So far she has eaten a piece of yellow squash, the radish and LOVES carrots. I am behind on starting a garden again this year. I’m done 8b. Life seems to throw me a curve ball every spring. Have a Blessed Week.

Wow, sounds like you’re off to a good start. Being behind isn’t the end of the world. I feel like I stay behind 😂. I need to get some garlic going one year. Plastic pool for a bed is a great and economical idea, thanks for sharing. Wishing you the best as you continue to work through the growing season.

When is your last frost date? I love the encouragement to new gardeners! I’ve had excellent results with dollar store seeds and containers that I’ve trash picked. You can also watch for local nurseries to clearance out their starts. Gardening can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be :)

For us late April (April 20 this year) is our frost date. I’ve seen it frost right up to that so I lean toward May 1. There’s a lot of gizmos and gadgets that definitely make it easier but they’re not necessary especially when first starting out.

I can't wait to get my garden going! I wish you luck on the potatoes. I have yet to successfully grow them (Lots of green but no spuds -_-"). Thank you for the encouragements! I look forward to more updates :)

Thank you. We’ve generally have success with the buckets but once in a while we end up with a dud. That’s just how gardening goes sometimes. Okra has always been a struggle for me but many people say it’s easy 🤷🏻‍♂️. I guess it’s just matter of finding what’s working for you and rolling with it. Wishing you the best with your garden.

Working backwards on the vids this week... The funny thing that people don't realize is that it's more about the compaction of the starter they use. The plants need loose soil to start well. I did the trash can style but with a white 35 gal drum. I felt the black would generate too much heat on the plant inside. I had good success. Have you thought about a gate between the two pens to make moving the kids easier?

I have thought about it. Gates are expensive now. Been waiting to catch a deal on Craigslist or some other sales platform. I’ve been lucky in the past but will just need to be patient. Hearing your drum working gives me hope. Thanks for sharing

Do you put anything on for the dry skin??

  • @RockyCreekHomestead

I won’t currently. We’ll just evaluate it and go from there. I believe what looks dry is actually where the skin was healing. The skin looks smooth and white under what looked dry.
