Kris Harbour Natural Building

Kris Harbour Natural Building

My goal is to buy some woodland in wales in the UK and build a house with natural and re-cycled materials.

I spend most of my time at the moment making things that will be beneficial for the future projects such and a water wheel/turbine a wind turbine, woodworking benches and holding tools.

i would rather make something with my hands than to buy it. there is nothing more rewarding to me than to make something and see it working. its a real privilege that i can spend my time doing what i enjoy.

If you used an inverter dynamo you could use or redirect all the energy you create. A cheap generator might be from a gasoline powered inverter generator. Fundamentally, the waterwheel is at best 40% efficient. I’ve taken a liking to the cork screw turban which takes advantage of the twists and fall in a whirlpool fashion I just see that you wheal can produce more than you need, and the extra can be shunted to heat water.

Wouldn’t a keyway be a better power transfer method? I had a grain milling machine fail in the exact way and I was surprised that it was welded in the first place. 🤷‍♂️

Just done some maths, that is I divided 6939400 W by 136402h to get an average out put of 50.87 watts per hour, seems low see it was showing an point in time out put of 688 W. Is my maths wrong or is the hour count wrong / being read incorrectly? Perhaps it is 13640.2 H (444 days running) which would give an average output of 508.7W?

Kris, you are a credit to Engineering responsibility. Pity that multibillion pound companies can’t or won’t do the same, as anyone who ever bought a new car will attest. As costly as this may have been to you in terms of monetary loss, you will reap that back in spades from new customers who will choose your experience and knowledge over price. Good on ya !

how did you get permission without an agricultural business? N. Somerset council denied my application for a similar set-up (smaller land) because my business made less than 5k profit a year then they changed my land use to leisure. I am very tempted to just ignore them and carry on anyway...

So it's only giving out 1kW of power? Wouldn't it be much easier, cheaper, and more reliable, to use solar panels? £60 for a 400W panel nowadays. This is a shining example of why wind turbines and water wheels can't compare to modern solar panels.

6900wWh over two winters is excellent. The productivity of that little turbine is remarkable when you consider I get about 3900kWh per year from my 4.1kW PV array. I would love micro-hydro to complement our solar PV, the long distance to our little stream, and relatively low head available would make it a real challenge though.

what happens if you put alternator both sides? will there be much resistance that it would generate lesser power? how about build custom cooling on the alternator since your also surrounded with flowing water?

  • @tealkerberus748

Do you have any microhydro that run on a farm dam rather than a flowing creek? The area I'm looking at gets enough rainfall overall to sustain a household, but it's too high in the catchment to give a continuous flow so I need to store the rain in a dam when it falls and run it through a turbine from that just like a miniature version of traditional mega hydro. I'd love to see other people working through the issues with a system like that before I buy the land and start building!

On your next generation, could you have a couple of folded tubes welded on the generator side to protect it when it is upside down on the floor? They could also double up as carry handles.

I have worked in heavy industry for years as a mechanical engineer and saw this too often!. Welding on shafts is to be avoided if at all possible. En24t is what we used on heavy conveyor drums and even when welded with the correct procedure have failed over time due, if welded, to fatigue propagating at welds. The Best solution is a keyed shaft and hub with a jib head key each side. The jib of the key can be tacked to the hub.
