Timber Framed Barn Part 22 Roof Rafters
For the last few weeks I have been battling the wether. it has just rained so much this winter it has been holding up the work a bit. But I managed to get some roof rafters up in the end.

i get the feeling that even if there was no cameras recording Kris would still be out there talking to himself
“It’s a building for life…” Mate, it’s a building for your great grandchildren’s life. Cheers for the upload, great way to spend my rainy Saturday

Where I live, there are half timbered, half mud houses which are hundreds of years old. The oldest from around 1450. Christophe Columbus was born then.

Get in fella loving a Saturday viewing session! At some point soon I would love to see your 2000 trees progress. Been following for 5 years ish!

Cheers for the images of trees at the end of this video! I watched you plant them great to see that progress! 32:02
The top floor of the barn with insulation would/could make a nice place to live, good sight over your land and I bet they are wonderful views.
I'm a designer for a commercial / industrial roofing / cladding company, for anything like that we would make custom aluminium valley gutters. Just make them generously wide under the roof sheets with a pitch as low as that and use foam fillers to stop wind-driven rain being pushed over them.
Haha, we're not here to audit the workshop Kris, we're here to admire the skill.
So glad you decided to insulate - I have an uninsulated hangar in soggy Dodogne and every winter I have to bring all my tools and most of my materials in to my house and give over the ground floor to it all, otherwise everything rusts and moulds etc. I can't wait to upgrade it with insulation and managed ventilation so I can have a proper store and workshop. My first thought was decent storage for Dot's fleeces on the upper floor - a dry insulated space with some humidity management would make that possible 😊
made my Saturday evening catching up with your Barn progress . I'm recovering from surgery on my arm, and half way through build my own Axial Flux Motor turbine following your videos on it. Thank you. far better viewing than any TV streaming service

I knew you'd reference Robin Clevett! I did a loft conversion a couple years ago myself and even though I've been a carpenter for 10 years I haven't done much structural work. Robins roofing videos were a life saver
Robin Clevitt is possibly the best to follow. His work is exceptional.
Been watching you now for I think at least 5 years Kris and your a bloody good worker and tackle stuff alone with ingenuity and learned skills that majority of guys would give up on before even starting, barn is looking great and yes insulate now to future proof because like many of us you won’t get around to it later .

The leadwork between the dormers is gonna be interesting
I know you always do your best to source all your building materials from Nature and your own land when possible. However, given just how much rain and windy weather you get there in winter and the shallow roof pitch on them, you might consider using something like Ice and Water Shield up, over and between those two dormers and out a meter or two either side of them. It seals around any fasteners that penetrate the roofing and would insure a no-leak zone around the dormers at least. You've already invested so much time and money in their construction that you don't want to have some micro leak soaking into your insulation without you knowing it before damage is already done. In addition to careful attention to installing a tight roof, using a product/treatment along those lines would provide excellent insurance should there be any tiny areas of moisture ingress caused by wind driven rain, keeping them from leaking altogether. One of those dormer bays will make such a lovely studio for Dot to spread out her work in and make her own, especially with a nice window to let natural light in. She'll be able to look out on the very sheep whose wool she's spinning into yarn! When you have a smaller living space, it's nice to keep it clean and free of clutter for serenity sake. Will be SO nice to have the barn done and all the space it will afford you both. We are building our own house and outbuildings as well, and we've really been inspired by seeing you switch gears from paying the amazing timber framing crew that helped you cut the frame to slowing things down and putting it all up yourself when the stress of the finances and all the challenges of keeping on a timeline became so overwhelming last fall. We could never afford to pay for all the materials and labor for someone else to build the design we want for our house, but if we're patient, steadfast and willing to work hard like you, we know we can build our dream design rather than compromising for the sake of speed and having a lesser expression of what we really want. We have a mill too and lots of trees, clay soils and tons of farmers producing straw in our area for great building materials, so if we stick to natural materials and using what we have right at hand, we can build something beautiful and lasting to live out our lives in too! All the crap weather must be very discouraging, but good on you for not letting it stop you from continuing to move forward. Can't wait to see what you'll be doing down on the ground floor with the walls and stone work. We always wait for your videos to come out with great anticipation. Really, really beautiful Kris. You're a real inspiration!

As Dot looks out at the sheep she watch the wool on them grow before her very eyes and will be reminded that the spinning job never ends ! What a satisfying life that sounds like.
You just keep walking the walk, that is truly natural building. It’s very inspiring to watch you take on these big asks and get them done, thanks for another great video 👍
The Barn is looking awesome, Im sure Dot will love working from up their, Id just spend all day watching the wild life and livestock 😄, and a cameo from Tiger's made my day 😍, must be hard to do all the filming and concentrate on actual building, but I do love to see how its all coming along, Thanks
You're really getting there now, its always the milestones in the project that help keep up the motivation and enthusiasm.
Great looking doormers young lad. Always nice to see the honkers and kids.👍👍💖🍻
Definitely a building for life! I think you are doing the right thing and will benefit to hold up a little now and then already now to think about future solutions, such as windows and insulation to avoid duplication of work in the future. It is a great pleasure to follow you and this beautiful building. Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪 😀
I'm glad you are going to add all the windows to the second floor of the barn, and make some work areas up there. Your views are spectacular, even in the mud, and wet of winter. I started watching this because of the skylight design you started with, and have never regretted the time watching any of your videos. Good to see you moving along so quickly. Thanks.
“Just another thing to do really “ Fantastic attitude.
"...not the other word." :D You crack me up. Audio was fine with the cameras unless you were really far away, so no worries. Barn is coming along fantastic, and it's always amazing to see that mill at work and remember that you built it with your own two hands! Thanks for the vid! EDIT: I felt suitably chastised for being on the pole that supports your ridge. :D
Let's be honest, this isn't a bad sized house for you, Dot and the kattern... you can always build another shed. Beautiful work, Kris, as always. Respect, admiration, and hugs. ❤
26:09 when you’re a hammer, everything is a nail…when you’re a carpenter…anything is a hammer. LOL this filming is fantastic by the way. Thanks for that extra effort.
Cool drone footage of the work. Appreciate your effort.

I do respectfully hope Kris has completed his CAA Drone Operators Registration as required by U.K. law. I would hate for him to be the subject of a prosecution by the CAA
I understand the frustrations of trying to build outdoors during inclement weather. You seem to have the ideal temperament for letting nature run its course. 👍👍👍
Beers and a damn good video to watch .... nothing finer !
Fantastic work, space for the Mrs included well done, this really is a lifetimes work and a life for you both. Good luck for the future.
A thing of beauty is a joy forever.
The barn loft will make an awesome studio! It looks bigger than your cob house. Nicely done Kris! Impeccable, as per usual.
I really enjoyed watching this Video Chris, amazing outcome of all that measuring, precise cuttings and general ingenuity. Keep up the WONDERFUL woodwork etc. The farm has progressed immensely, the product of You and Dot !. Stay safe both of you xx
I remember Wales being full of hazelnut trees. They support so much wildlife & can be copiced every few years. The trunks grow straight & true & are great for fencing or for outdoor artwork. I love what you ve done & where you're going. It's wonderful 👍😎

I live on the South Wales coast and I've only been on my motorbike twice in the last 4 months ! Never known so much rain, even for Wales !
Another great video you are right it has been the wettest 6 months i have see and i am 80 years and play golf so i follow the weather but let's look towards spring and summer 😊
my fave build series on the internet !
I saw you push 58 when you said 50 😂. Great channel Kris, long term viewer
Kris, you are awesome. “I’ve run out of timber but i will mill some more up, on the mill that i made !!! FFS
Love what you are doing. Hard work but it must have satisfaction at its completion. I always thought the barn was going to be your home.
Was hoping for another episod the other day and here it is! TY!
The building is looking more like the model every day. A lot of hard work has gone in to that.
I had a good laugh from what you said. I'm not a roofer. From that look around from the top floor shows that you my friend have the largest roof in the local surroundings so I guess you are a roofer an an awesome 👌 one at that you work is fantastic great job
You always impress me with all you do. Enjoy watching your work and Dot''s too. Don't see her much but know she is working all the time. Also enjoy all your video's. Remember watching you from the beginning and didn't realize how long it has been. But always interesting at what you are doing. Have a great weekend.
Love what you doing. Big Project, keep it Up, worship it and be Happy after your done and what youve done. ❤
Evening mate. Always good to see a upload 👋🏼
Looking good Kris, love the dormer windows, I'm with you on the weather, I'm outside a lot, and I was only saying the other day, I'm just sick of being wet, I've been wet since July. 😂😂. It's been an abysmal 8 months.
Another awesome and interesting video from you. Thanks and keep them coming soon. 👍
Oh my god - you are going to have to charge admission someday so people can come see all this work you have designed and done mostly yourself - amazing. hope I can visit someday after all these years of watching the progress and being on Patreon as well. So interesting 💚🩵hello tiger 😺
Thanks for the shout out!!!. Super gentlemanly of you, of you need a hand shout!!
The function of the two dormers is brilliant and makes the barn even more beautiful as well!❤
That barn is going to be massive, definitely add some weight to the bottom
As a temporary measure to improve the wobbling and stability, you could put several huge diagonal braces between all the verticals downstairs
Fantastic video as always. Another step closer.
best channel on youtube!
Great progress and video, as usual. Very good job.
Nice work Kris . love the homestead brother .
It must be such a good feeling to look down at the lush green fields with happy geese, chickens, etc. They love you, Kris!
Always a pleasure to see the latest update. Cheers to you and Dot.
It will be a beautiful space to work in,
6:30 the time lapse with the clouds in shot is an absolute beauty!
I noticed you pressing the wrong key on your phone for that calculation but I just thought he ‘knows what he’s doing it must be me ! I just love your work mate and natural presentation. It always gives me a lift and some inspiration so Thankyou ❤️
Great video mate living the dream 👌🙏
It's a lovely place for Dot to enjoy that you're creating up there. You'll also have plenty of space so you can have an office up there as well.
Robin Clevitt is the man!
Hello, I am always happy to watch your updates on the barn project. Most excellent work.
LOOKES GREAT KRIS. I'M FROM THE US. MY WIFE IS FROM NUVA SCOTA. HER MOM IS WELCH, CAME TO CANADA IN THE 19 HUNDEDS' LOVE THE CONNECTION. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
Yeah Kris have felt a “ cant ” a few times in my life 😁👍🏻.
Glad to watch your video. I love your channel, I found it a few weeks ago and have not stopped watching them all. You do great work.
Your drone shots help to bring home what it is actually that you are doing in this video. Nice work. It is understandable dealing with the daily boredom of repetitive chores and duties but lucky to have available plenty of different things to do. But in any case I'm excited to see another video. Me southern AZ. (USA)
Nice Job Chris!
I appreciate how much content he packs in every video ( and the lack of those dumb shockface thumbnails "You won't believe what happened!")
As a new viewer, the time between vids is excruciating! Love your channel and devotion to your long term goal and plans! I know those DJI drone warning tones all too well! Pays to set it up to autoland at a nice clear spot.

AlanTheBeast100 - Hope you a viewing all of the past videos as you wait for the current ones. For several years Kris uploaded videos weekly (or nearly weekly) so there are a lot to watch. One of the most interesting playlists is the one for the hydro system that Kris built - and then upgraded - on his own property.

@@wendyweaver8749 Thanks. I began with the waterwheel he did for a client, then the earthship shops interspersed with building his sawmill and other things. I think I've seen them all now! Took half of December, then Jan and Feb to get through it all. Definitely followed windmill and micro hydro with great interest.
Kris, thanks for the videos. Especially this barn project of yours. It reminds me of the ones I saw in the countryside growing up around Reading. The dormers are a nice accent. I think you'll be happy with them.
Every time I watch one of Kris’s videos, I’m reminded of the old record hit several decades ago in Britain “Right Said Fred”. Lyrics by Bernard Cribbins on KZread!
That barn is going to be a work of art.
I love the Dorma window spaces. And I am thrilled you are doing some stone work. It all looks fabulous Kris and Dot.... hope you both had a happy St David's day xxx
I love the complete honesty rather than the pretend perfection for camera crap… it is genuine and one sees the graft for the perfection. It is great… unlike the Welsh weather!
Really enjoyed the update - the structure is really shaping up well - properly looking forward to seeing the roof go on!
The legendary Hat of Warmth...+5 to Warmth...+5 to Charisma
That craft area in the barn will help keep your dwelling less cluttered.
What a fantastic building so far... well done Kris.... great vids, shame about the weather, recall the winter I rebuilt the roof on a 120year old cottage... back in 1989. Keep at it... Liked you Water geny too.
Living the dream Kris, hopefully one day I will escape the rat race!
Kris, you are progressing well and the small holding is looking good. The fact you don't mind sharing when you make a mistake is so much better. A number of other channels always make out something is perfect when it doesn't seem right on camera. The trees look good and l remember you planting them, but the addition of Dot was the best decision you have made. A true crafts person like yourself. I just hope at some stage along the way you can start a family together. Its good that the hydro plant is working well, but unfortunately you know that the UK especially Wales has always been wet. Just a suggestion to you, could you not hirer someone to mill some timber for you to progress the build a bit quicker. The trees planted mush off a bit of a wind break to the barn build etc. Dot l am sure will be tending the green house ready for the first days of spring to maximise your fruit and vegetable crops for the year ahead. Keep up the good work, stay safe.
Looks so great. Also, nice to see the trees so tall, thanks! As always, love your videos.
Great to see it coming along!
You are going to have a beautiful barn Kris. It’s already looking great. 👍
Buzzing everytime i see you’ve uploaded.
Looking absolutely awesome Kriss 😊 Glad you’re making room for Dot 😘
Stay safe and we'll see you next time.
spot on for the Robin Clevett mention, your not wrong he is the master carpenter :)
A very nice penthouse workshop with panoramic views.
Poor windmill, down on its face again. Interesting to see how hard it is to keep windturbines running consistently, without downtime "all" the time. Good to see the trees doing so well, I remember the footage of when you put those in.
For the past set of videos I thought you were installing "Irish J" beams, the name did not make sense so I searched it today and learned they are "RSJ" beams; "Rolled Steal Joist" makes a lot more sense :-) Always great to learn. Thanks for the great videos.
Hay Chris, love the channel have from the very beginning. Want to make sure you have a one inch space between the roof deck and the insulation so the roof can breath, open at the bottom and top to allow the air to flow, there by keeping the inside of the building cool in the summer and warm in the winter, it also stop any condensation from developing in the roof structure. And thank for all you've done over the years your quit the inspiration Terry.
Excelente trabajo...genio.! Gracias. Saludos desde Fuengirola.
Mans always thinking "I'm gonna have to land ya" Time and motion study hence the ear defenders Genius
You said 0 and hit 8...I was hoping for your sake you meant to say 8 and not 0!!! You build how I build...I love it!!!
Gonna be a gorgeous building. The view from the roof is quite pretty. Have to say Kris with your skills and work ethic you could come to America and be a millionaire
Thank you for another great video!
Another great vid. Love the honesty that filming distracts from precision!
Your barn is so nice I would consider living in the upper floor. Love your content Sir.
The Barn structure is looking great Kris ! And the property looks Beautiful, it's come a long way from raw land when you started. Love your video's, Take Care.
