Timber Framed Barn Part 23 Stone Walls
For the last few weeks I have been working on the stone walls that infill between the supporting foundations. I need to get these done in order to get more rigidity in to the building before putting the roof on. I have managed to get half of the walls done and some extra bracing installed. The plan is to keep going around finishing off these walls and getting even more bracing done. Then I can move on to the roof again.

Love how your reaction to finding a place for that window is like how a 60yr dad whos kept that 1 piece of random crap around for 30yrs and finally the day has come to prove him right for keeping it cos its now found its use
I bloody hate living in Britain when the weather's like this.
wales and weather.... the rhod gilbert joke.... i was thirteen before i knew i could take my anorak off.
Just passed my 69th birthday. With age comes wisdom, like the wisdom to watch your videos. I learn so much by watching. You have given me loads of ideas of how to "make do" with what's available instead of razing the environment for a less than durable result. I especially like when you create your own contraptions to tackle a task on your own as I'm in a wheelchair now and it takes a bit a of think to figure how to approach some projects. Carry on inspiring us Kris!
Kris, us mere mortals are struggling with this weather in regular life, let alone trying to build on a wet and windy hillside. Cracking job fella!
The windows and stone wall add your signature craftsmanship to the barn. You are a true artist Kris.
'My stonework isn't exactly tip top...' Proceeds to build incredible wall 😂
I’m always gratified to discover one your vlogs sitting awaiting my attention. I’m sure It’s the absence of senseless music, the abundance of natural acquired skill that ensures I’m in for a treat. Above all its the peaceful environment in which you work. Thank yet again

There’s one thing that experience over many years has taught me and I’m 78 with 100’s of single handed building projects behind me. I have learned the value of always wearing work gloves when handling lime and cement. I see you you’re not wearing gloves and nor did I when I was young, but now I prefer to wear gloves. It stops your hands from getting chaffed and dried out and protects them from minor scratches and digital injuries. Look after your hands, never take them for granted, they’re your greatest asset.

You always say you're not good at it, but you're a quick learner. Give yourself some credit. Good work.
Kris your content is great. Thank you for an easter treat.
I look forward to your updates. I admire and enjoy watching the life you are making for yourself and Dot. You don't need to keep apologising for the wind though mate, you're in Wales 😂
Work like that gives you a real appreciation for those who have built entire homes out of stone like that. Looks great!
Thanks for making this video Kris, every three weeks is better than we could ask for, especially with this weather we have been suffering. Roll on spring.
Kris, your work ethic, craftsmanship, and commitment to doing things right is truly amazing. I enjoy your videos and love watching the progress on the barn. Most people may not understand just how much work it really takes to create a structure this big. What you’re doing is AMAZING! Keep up the great work. I’m praying for a little better weather for you!
Chris, what a job you did. Because your craftsmanship is the reason we wait patiently for the next video. Job well done mate.
Great work Kris, you have so much patience & determination 👏👏
I've been following this whole project and loved the fitting of the frame pieces... But now I really see a whole new level of craftsmanship coming... Anticipating the next Vid!
I think those windows laying around for ages that fit almost perfectly is what we all call a real result. Well done for not chucking them away and waiting to reuse them ,a lesson for all of us .
Kris, you blow my ind mate, the channel has given me so much joy in time so fdarkness. you are truely a proper legend, love your life and skills and Dots. thank you for everything youve given me.
Please know that your thousands of subscribers and Patreons would love taking a videoed walk through your land on days too rainy and/or windy for working on the barn. For example: a video about the 2,500 trees you planted years ago - how they are doing, etc. We would also enjoy tagging long as you do everyday chores or a video focused on all of the animals. Even just video featuring Snoop(sp?) would be warmly welcomed.

Fully agree here..
In the day many folks built their own buildings, they could do anything, you are just like them mate!
Chris, I rebuilt a 1870 20m by 60m by 20m high barn, 3m high .75m wide stone walls in the lower level and large beams in the upper part of the barn. A lot of the stone lower walls had to be torn out to below the ground level and rebuilt to the original height. We put 20m of windows in the one wall, geothermal heat in the cement floor, washrooms, big screen tvs, and pool table, shuffle board tables, and a large glass garage door hidden behind barn doors. Also installed a hot tub in a large flagstone patio outside in a stoned wall area adjoining to barn. Also insulated the lower level ceilingsI loved the job, it took 2.5 years to complete. After spending a lot of time rebuilding those stone walls I have great appreciation for the settlers who gathered and moved those stones to the job site and built those structures. Some our stones were so big some took two and three workers to lift. We also had to devise a way to hold up the upper structure when we tore down long stretches of lower supporting stone wall to rebuild. This was done in Ontario, Canada
Matey - watching your videos are truly inspirational....would love to have your patience and drive..
"Wouldn't be expecting anything too amazing", you say. I suppose there's a first time for everything, but not this time. Yet another skill apparently nailed first time. Absolutely amazing. Again. Thanks for sharing your inspirational work.
👍👌👏 again and as always (video and work). Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards, luck and especially health to all involved life forms (humans and animals).
Don't feel bad about a slower video pace. They are worth the wait, and so is your health! Love seeing what you and Dot have done with that place over the years. Fantastic vision and inspiring follow-through. Thanks for taking us along.
It is coming along. And no hurry it is only the first year of all the centuries this barn will stand there.
Your humbleness, combined with all the skills you have learned are a gem in these modern times.
You must be sooo proud and pumped waking up to your mammoth project. I used to be a big DIYer but now disabled and in my 70s…great watching you. Never let it be a bind….you are making so much progress despite our Welsh weather. 👍🏴 You’re an inspiration to us all.
Wishing you sunshine. Thx for the vid. Barn is Really coming along nicely. ✌🏻
Stonework is a grueling, mentally-sapping job. As you know, every stone that is fit into position is a decision. Well worth the effort, and you've done a superb thus far.
It's a lot of work for mostly 1 person Chris, so everyone should understand how much extra work it is to film especially on them cold rain filled days. I could sure tell you weren't enjoying the stone walls build on the rainy days so Thank you for taking the time to film. I do wish you would of put a couple steal rods in the base concrete though just to hold it tight as it cracks over the years. 😊
Hi Kris love your work, the joinery is very good. Some advice as a senior trades man that I was given as an apprentice and ignored to my detriment, 72 next birthday, please use knee pads, gloves, etc. You will regret not doing so later in life, I do!!
watching you concrete in the rain wind and cold reminds me why retiring was the happiest day of my life. All those summer days were well earned during winter, good luck bonny lad.
Hello Kris, sealing the wooden beam on both sides with concrete is a huge mistake. The beam shrinks and a gap forms between the wood and the concrete. This means you have a tub from which the water cannot escape. The beam must always have a drip edge where the water drips vertically. The concrete must be narrower than the beam.
@Aglaja_
2 ай бұрын
Also, the concrete will detoriate the wood, if it is not specially made for this kind of work. We do have a lot Fachwerkhäuser (medieval houses with wood skeletons) whose owners renovated and realized too late it was the false kind of concrete.
@HoboWhisperer
2 ай бұрын
Will the eaves of the barn roof keep enough water off of the beam to prevent this? I suppose they won't help with the gable ends though, will they?
@mbuster6769
2 ай бұрын
Kris uses lime, not concrete (cement). Lime is more flexible. And I guess Tudor (and Fachwerk) houses were built the same way, using lime, so it should be all right. Drying time in these wet conditions will be long though.
@tyremanguitars

@@mbuster6769 tudor houses were build with hot earth lime and hot fat lime mixes that's why they have lasted so long, NHL and especially NHL5 which was designed for sea defences sets way too hard and doesn't have anywhere near the performance, it gets harder and harder over time and can't breathe, without constant wetting it will crack, there is very little free lime content in it. Natural stone requires traditional methods and an immense knowledge of mortars and how to mix them correctly.

I wouldn't have bothered with those sills. I would have just framed it inside those sections and left the bottom of the frame "floating" just above the finished wall. Then when the cladding goes on water can run down the face of the building on to the wall where hopefully it will drain away, but if it doesn't it won't be in contact with any of the structural timber. Essentially keep the timber part of the building "floating" above the masonry, like the posts currently are, but with the cladding going all the way to the bottom.
Your patience is admirable
Thank you for more great building work. It always amuses me to read the comments on the details, you must have a lot of architect fans that are good with pictures as opposed to the actual work. Its always easy to pass comment on others hard efforts, but after building houses for more than 20 years I can honestly say, if its warm and doesn't leak, and serves the purpose for the resident, its a miracle! I can't believe the skill set 1 man and wife can have and here's testimony to it, I love the water wheel! Well done Kris and Dot. The Barn will outlive you both im sure!
Amazing, new video for Easter. Thank you Kris!
I see that your cat has you trained quite well, mine has me trained aswell. Glad you finally got a break in the weather. Stonework came out nice. Y'all take care.
I love little Snoop she is so cute 🥰
please don't fret over posting your videos, i doubt that any of us mind. it's so good to just see your beautiful work hun!
I feel your pain with the weather. It’s not stopped for six months. Fair play to you for achieving what you have and it’s just started raining again!!! 😩
The barn is coming along nicely! The stone walls look great. I live the angled windows. Adds some nice character to the barn. You do such great work, a true work of art and great care in all you build.
You have progressed so well over these past 6 years. So nice to see the greenhouse standing there so proudly and the goose house too. Such masterful work. Thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable video. You ate a natural with the stonework and the wood work your explanations are so helpful. And you definitely choose the right wood! Way to go, Kris!
You still have so much to do, Kris. Post your videos when you can. They are always well received and very interesting and informative. 😊
I’ve been watching since pretty much the beginning when you built what is now your power shed and I’m absolutely amazed at what you’ve accomplished since then. Hopefully the weather starts to be more cooperative and you can get more videos released because that means more progress and income to allow your homestead to grow.
Your videos always inspire me Kris, total admiration for your ability to strive on towards your goals.
Thanks for another video. I love the way those ear defenders never come off 😊
Really coming together nicely Kris! I started watching when you were building your greenhouse. This year I'm starting to build my own greenhouse inspired by your build.
Swapping out the real mallet for the carpel tunnel mallet seems like a good idea. Beautiful work.
Man your doing an awesome job. I love your videos and your talent is really next level I;ve been watching your videos for year's great job
I love how building style changes so much from house to greenhouse to workshop to barn. Makes me excited to see what the permanent house will look like!
Good to see you back. Endless bad weather can be soul destroying, glad to see you've kept your enthusiasm for the project albeit slightly tarnished by incessent rain; brighter days are just around the corner...☀
Kris, you say you're not professional! Professionals get paid! Amateurs do it for love!
I always jump at the chance to view your videos soon as they become available yet I find it very remarkable, after seeing all your videos, that you would choose to cut yourself down like you do. Do you need us, your viewers, to rally together and print up some fancy looking papers stating publicly about your amazing abilities as a qualified farmer, woodsman, electronics engineer, stonemason, environmentalist and other craftsmanship's? You prove you know by doing the very things you sometimes cut yourself down about. I can tell you that I myself and all my friends come to your channel to watch and learn about things most necessary in the construction world. Your videos provide a most pleasant learning environment that you simply cannot find in any modern day classroom. If only the upper college members who rule our higher learning arenas taught like you do then the output of quality graduates could possibly change and improve our very world. Watching your videos I have been entertained but most importantly I always walk away having learned something that I didn't know before and for this I personally thank you. You can have dozens of certificates hanging on your wall but they are just that a piece of fancy paper. Yours are the finished work that your hands have provided. And even better is the way you sometimes go against the mainstream way of thinking and still produce something artistically beautiful. Say what you will against your own abilities but I know differently. Just watching your videos prove you actually know what you are doing. Humbly, Me southern AZ (USA)
Quality work as usual Kris. This is a fantastic project that will give years of pleasure to work in. Yes more videos would be great but not at the expense of your project. See you when ever - Paul 😃😃😎😎
Kris, you're too humble, your amateur job is better than most so called "professional" jobs Well done
Chris, you are amazing. I respect you immensely. Have a wonderful life.
New videos by Kris and Martijn Doolard, my absolute favourites. Nice way to relax on Easter Sunday !
We look for you each week, no matter what you’re doing, we look forward to seeing your hard work! Hang in there, take your vitamin D and K2 and sit in any sun you can get! Maybe a little vacation is in order! Love from Minnesota ❤
Your skills continue to amaze me. Fantastic Job, can’t wait to see the roof going on. Getting her dried in will allow you to slow down and get down to the work you will really enjoy.
Such an GORGEOUS finishin' Sir... thats some PROPPA masonery worker 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Hello Kris from Texas! Really love your videos and the amazing things you accomplish.
I noticed your helper didn't want to show his/her face.. Always a treat to watch.. Thank you for sharing... Have a great day...
Kriss, I know how bad normal cement can burn the skin, I can’t imagine how bad lime would burn. Surely a pair of gloves would save your hands. Hope the weather improves for you, keep up the great videos, but remember safety please.
Ah yes, rain. I have been having to work in the mud, cold, and in between rain trying to get my garden fence up before the season starts, otherwise the deer will eat everything. Can't wait for some warm sunny days! Good looking stonework too!
That stone wall will really make all the difference to the look of the barn when it is finished. Top work as usual Kris. 😀🇬🇧
It's a joy to follow your content Kris, you're living my dream, I built stud walls like that in a timber framed/cladding garage I built, it was so strong screwed in along the diagonal bracing as you say, if you insulate and clad the inside it'll be amazing and last decades
Keep up the good work looking forward to your next video 😊
Love the attention to detail and how beautiful it looks. Wish I had the funds and skills for my own place.
Perfect job Kris, love every minute of it. 👍👍👍👍
Genuine hero. He does things I'd dream of doing with humility. So calming to watch too.
I was starting to wonder if you were okay Kris sweetheart. Love to you and Dot and I haven’t watched the vid yet but I know it’s going to be epic. ❤❤❤
I feel your pain on the weather. I've just had part of my roof stripped and re-fitted. It's taken nearly three weeks to complete, what the Roofer tells me, was a four day job. Hopefully it will at least get warmer, if not drier, over the coming weeks.
Hiya Kris , Nice work 👏. Always good to see you n Dot. Careful of the guard goose 😂
I for one appreciate every video you do! Thank your helper for all he does! Don’t push it to fast! That rock is growing! Got to love weather like you get! You might develop web feet. Lol Thanks Kris appreciate your skills!
Just a side note, cementing over moss will eventually deteriorate the surfaces beneath. Certainly appreciate you showing your work on video. 👍

Brilliant work you've done there mate! Cheers
its a plusher to see you back at the barn Kris. & at lest we can begin to see things developing in to what i think will undeadly be a good dry working space on the small holding tacks me back to a time when we built a piggery. we lived of grid with out power but in an old cottage remotely plats in the land. i say well don son I've sent your detail to Gridlessness.
Inspirational effort mate, I can’t wait to escape, respect from Australia
Doing a great job Kris. Keep it up.. keep your head up The weather will change soon Its spring time and still wet .. But Eventually mostly sun all day.. You will feel much better.!!!!😊
You are an inspiration Kris. Inspired me to clear out my garage.
Down in the South West, it feels like I can count the sunny days we've had so far this year on one hand.
Excellent update, Kris. You are certainly a Jack of all trades. It's a long time since I've seen a tyre fitted without pneumatic assistance!
I've been following your channel for a few years now and what I find so nice is thar your're an easy man to follow since you never rush your projects. For me, loojing at your jobs makes me think tou are a specialist in everything; all you do is hard and so well done. I will definitely keep waiting for your next one. Regards from Canada.
Kris, fantastic skills, love to see your work but a bit of advice on concrete and mortar. Wear gloves or use barrier cream. I worked in heavy construction and delivered plaster as a lorry driver at a time when gloves were seen as a sign of weakness but thirty odd years later I've got the split fingers and dry, itchy skin on my hands to show for it.
It’s looking more and more like a house every day! ❤
Great content, not sure where I heard that concrete will eat the wood even if it’s pressure treaded. Just a heads up
