Timber Framed Barn Part 20 More Purlins And Hydraulic Oil To The Face!

So After a winter of mostly working on hydroelectric related projects I finally found time to get back to work on the barn. The barn will be ocupying most of my time now until autumn. I managed to get the purlins done for the sloped roof side of the building but also managed to get a face full of hydraulic oil and smash my thumb. Hope you enjoy.

Kris - I absolutely enjoy your videos and have watched all your content for many years. I'm always impressed how much you can accomplish. I suspect my next comments will be ignored, but maybe they will resonate this time after the hydraulic hose failure....... You have accepted the potential loss of hearing valuable enough to wear ear muffs. Fantastic! Please, please reconsider your lack of respect for your eyes. You will miss being able to see so much more than you will miss your ability to hear. Wearing eye protection works. I say this out of respect and love for your dedication to being independent.

This is one of my favorite videos that you've done. Moving off grid and being a small holder isn't all rainbows and unicorns, there is a tremendous amount of hard work, sacrifice, and pain involved. Plenty if times it will be sheer grit and determination that keeps you going when conditions are awful, nothing works right, and work is painful. Important to see this side of the equation too. Hat's off to you sir, well done.

We're really happy that you let us be a small part of your life. Thank you so much! We continue to donate a tiny bit every month, all we ca afford. You and Dot's kind and loving personalities really shine through, reminding us that there are still people out there with good mental health. A small observation, if you don't mind: you might take time to reconsider your body mechanics, as you are easily spending twice as much energy as needed. You do a lot of almost overhanded work, for instane lifting pearlings up, an reaching up to bang them into place. If you were standing about 2 feet higher (on a ladder, perhaps), you would use much less energy. Your work should be approximately at waist height. Also too much hand sawing and chisling - set up a jig on your table saw to do most of the work on cut-outs and grooves. But we love you two over here in Colorado, USA!

Seeing the head of your wooden hammer come flying off I could feel your pain. I just went thru a painful unexpected accident at home building a barn/shed 12x16. I was moving something in the grass when the grass was still wet from the morning dew. My feet slipped and when I went down it felt like someone hit my thigh with a sledge hammer. An MRI revealed a torn tendon in my quad. Had surgery on the 12th and this could take up to 8 weeks before I can walk without a brace on. So I say to everyone never say it cant happen to you getting hurt doing even simple tasks

Starting to get glimpses of how fabulous the barn is going to be. Hope you are not working too hard and are taking care of yourself and Dot.

I thought you got quite a lot done in this video, considering all the off camera activities that also have to get done as well, I'll bet we didn't even see 1/4 of what you actually did in the week, (the rest of the tractor repair, feed animals, editing, etc). Just know the effort you put into these videos is appreciated 👍

It’s great to see progress continuing on the barn. You’re a very gifted craftsman Kris, this build is definitely a testament to that. I have watched and learned some techniques I’ve never experienced before in your previous projects. I got hooked on your channel several years ago after watching an episode of you building the reciprocal roof rafters on the earth bag shop. Thank you for the videos on KZread, I look forward to them!😊

Great to see tis project progress, cannot wait to see what you do with all that new space you have created, but like you say, one job at a time.

Boy, what a week! Bad weather, pressure washed with hydrolic oil, blown hose, flat tire. You've got your share these days. Heads up, you're doing great. :) And, yeah, lucky that wasn't hot oil.. I spoke too soon! Your mallet disintegrated as well! 😕
