Garden Improvements, Fencing, Gate Making And Bench Restoration
All summer Dot has been asking me to fence the garden, make a gate and restore a bench. this week I took a bit of a break from the barm build to catch up with the garden jobs.

No doubt about that!!
Haven't watched it yet, but can see from the thumbnail that it's gonna be the most over engineered and robust gate ever made. Will outlive all of us 👍👍

Unfortunately it'll start to rot within 10 years or so due to our constant rain, especially with just linseed oil.

Any lass who will handle a post driver with you in this weather and not look like she's having an absolutely horrible time is: 1) A complete legend 2) A keeper
If you put a damp towel around your neck you will be surprised how much better you will feel in the heat. From Australia.
28:34 where you have those 2 missing uprights in the middle section you could make a wooden name plate to hide that, 'Dotts Garden' or something like that
The gate is really lovely. If I had it all to do again, this is the type of lifestyle I'd have.
“A nice traditional wooden gate” …starts adding scroll work. Lol An artist, an engineer… so many facets of this diamond!
Love the way they take their time to give the cat loving attention and just enjoy creating
I like watching this guy. He appears to have a good deal of knowledge. Plus there is not wasted time explaining every little detail.
I function best over 25°C. Then it's off with the t-shirt, don the shorts and sandals. Best way. So those 3 days of the year (if lucky) we have temperatures like that here in Norway, I'm going crazy trying to get stuff done that I suddenly have the energy for. Sod what anyone thinks of seeing my "attire" 🤣 Kris, you're doing amazing work as always. You ought to be the role model for coming generations. Awe inspiring.

As well as having a job, Dot is always working hard around the homestead and garden. So to build her a nice bench to have a well earned rest now and again is a great gesture. As my wife constantly says to me "you have to keep the missus happy". Forgot to mention, that's one robust gate that will last for years to come.
Amazing garden Dot! Beautiful gate and bench Kris! Well done both of you.
I always found that it was good to listen to my partner about working for the garden. well done
So impressive. Really here’s a couple who’ve got life right.
Its funny - Ive been outside working ALL DAY - shovelling, chopping, digging, cutting, sawing etc - come in and watch you work to relax !!
Nice video, good vibes and a happy Dot. Priceless.
The amount of skills you have is huge! The ability to create so much with mostly simple resources! You give me some hope for generations to come.
26 deg and 85% is a nice spring day here mate , 45 deg is a summer day here . Nice work brother.
I just want to thank Kris, for sharing his love of creatively living his dream.
The basket is beautiful. I always like to see the things that Dot makes. Although we don't often get a chance to see the things Dot does, I know she is talented!
I have not seen your videos in a long time Kris and Dot is a very lucky lady to have that beautifully built green house . The bench and gate is beautiful.
When I saw the HOBBITON GATE DESIGN… it all made sense..💝🤣🤣🤣🤣😎
Great episode. Lovely to see Dot and how the garden is coming along. Having a fury baby around the worksite is such a pleasure. That bench is a perfect addition. Would love to know if you preserve any of your food.

Dot has been learning canning. She also makes chutneys. But we also freeze a lot of stuff. I would like to get in to curing meats at some point as well.

Bottling meat is also a good process. I used to bottle when I had a garden. Salsa was a favourite. It never lasted long tho. Thanks for the reply Kris.

Chris I really love your videos but the gate is hung around the wrong way. As usual for you it's made perfectly but should be hung from the other end to prevent it sagging. I'm going to cop flack for this but if you check and swing it around it won't sag. I was shouting at the screen when you started to mount the hinges. As you said, first time to build a gate. I mean no offence. Kind regards mate.

No it is not, that type of gate has the brace in tension, not compression, hence the extension upwards at the hinge side. Quite a common design in the UK.
Such a charming life you have there Kris. Genious skills and one of the finest human beings left on the planet. Respect
29:28 - A “legless lizard”…. literally NO end to the education Kris provides. I mean seriously, who has even heard of a legless lizard that ISN’T a snake or a worm? I’m not embarrassed to say at 50-“something”, I have never heard of them… AT ALL! 😂 You have to love how Kris does things; that “just put together” gate is battleship ready, looks incredible, operates easily and WILL outlive Kris and likely his great grandkids too! And then he tops it off with the “not bad for a day & a half, 2 days work”…. I consider myself fairly “handy”, I can build functional things if need be, and love working & building with wood and have done so for 40 or so years. A gate would take me at least a week (likely longer), I’d have HAD to have either drawn it out (multiple times) or have obtained a building plan; it would not have been weighted properly because I wouldn’t have even thought about that part, and there is NO question I’d have been uneven in enough places to need to do a lot of “grooming” of the earth under it. In the end, I’d have a gate that was difficult to move, uneven & crooked, and too heavy & awkward for “my Dot” to use. In other words, at the end of all that, I’d STILL be doing the weeding in the garden!😂😜. Dot…. while there is NO question Kris won the lottery when he met you and you fitted in to this kind of life and he’s incredibly fortunate to have found such a perfect mate…. you’re also blessed to have such a detailed and attentive partner who can “whip together” things you need with such care and precision. Really, hats off to both of you! Kris never ceases to amaze & impress all of us with the level and quality of work he does. Damn, I wish I had 15% of the abilities you have man… keep showing us this content, it’s truly amazing! Maybe this has been asked and answered before but…. Approximately where is your homestead located? I’m curious to see where you are in proximity to what little I know of England. Does anyone know where to look say on google maps?? The area reminds me very much of eastern Canada; being originally from there, it’s likely why I love the look of this homestead. Anyone’s help would be appreciated! I’m not looking for exact address, just an area. Again, just awesome stuff Kris‼️ Cheers from 🇨🇦 🤠👍🏼☮️
It’s great to watch Kris as an engineer , However as a craftsman/carpenter/artisan the end result of that work is why I began watching this channel. Well done 😎
No that's what you call a GATE! Beautiful!!!
Nice gate. Re-watching the early videos gives a true impression of what you have accomplished so far. Very inspiring.
There's "a gate" and then there's Kris's gate. 😊
Live for this channel and it's uploads. Absolutely fantastic content, in a world where production value is at an all time low.

In Arizona the temps have been over 100° F for days. We are tired of it. That said our humidity is considerably lower than yours. Love the original woodworking you do. Just beautiful craftsmanship.
Chris, living in Virginia teaches you that fans are your friend and lots of water!
26 degrees and 84% humidity and us people that live in Australia, are just starting to take our winter clothing off . Love your craftmanship Kris truly amazing work
Lovely lifestyle. So hardworking, creative and kind. 😻
Dot was really putting all her weight into slamming those posts into the ground. She's a hard worker!
Kris - I have Chisel envy - every time I watch one of your episodes you come out with an even wider chisel - all perfectly sharpened :)
Hi kris, you don't have to apologise for the way you look. I think the gate looks fantastic, and the bench looks absolutely beautiful. It's great to see you, garden🍅🥕🥔 🌽 great video, thanks 👍👍

That wee battery powered chainsaw is the unsung hero of your channel mate Gate looks class
Smashing good-looking gate. I confirm being your neighbour this heat with humidity is a killer. 👀📣
Kris, you are a fantastic individual, intelligent, hardworking, and skillful.👍
Thank you for showing us the garden. I love the homemade baskets~What a beautiful gate and bench for the garden~! exceptional💚
Ridiculous ? Don’t put yourself down brother it’s hot 🥵 outside I went shop in my y-fronts yesterday (joking) boxers person really but mate i love your videos cant wait to see the rest of the barn build god bless 🙏 Just finished the end the gate and the bench are absolutely brilliant. Talented 🙏
Amire your work 😮regards from Tokyo 😊
if you just stop it around 30:28, and look up that hill, man I bet 5+yrs ago whenever it was you bought the place, you'd have loved to see what it looks like now! Flourishing garden, workshop, big windmill, and the frame of a barn going up! Top work fella!
i had to smile when told about the quality work , my mate and i are at the "it will see me out" phase , fabulous work as always a pleasure to watch
Hey Kris....you should remind people to like the video at the end. I always forget... Keep up the good work! 😍
Dear Kris Harbour. 👍👌👏 Happy wife, happy life! Very well done again (video and work). Best regards, luck and especially health to all involved life forms (humans, animals and plants).
That gates medieval,awesome looking thing.
It’s a pleasure to watch you do things Chris but wow you got that woodwork down to a T now! The accuracy is unreal & just with a chisel!
I’m convinced that makita chainsaw is the best electric chainsaw on the market. It’s built so much for you.
Hi Kris. Great bench. I’ve just finished doing the exact same bench. You seem to missing the centre back metal brace the circumnavigates under the bench to add firmness in the middle. It is the same thickness and width as the two other supports that protrude from the sides. I hope that adds to your created idealism. Best Wishes. Andy

Nice one, I didn't know that they were supposed to have that. I will look at some pictures of them.
Great to see that ?plan come together. The weather has been ridiculous this year, so we do what we can or return to the local store (not much of an option for some). Stray fit and healthy. A’bientot from Cleguerec 💚🇫🇷🍷🇬🇧👍🇪🇺🐾🐾🐑🐈⬛
I think a bolt/a bit of glue should work…this is the only channel where the “woodworker” doesn’t pull out his festival dominoe joiner (thanx Chris!)
New bench and New gate. You're spoiling that girl Kris! 🤣
The gate is well hinged and well balanced, just like all of Kris's projects and videos!
Great episode Kris, loved every moment. Nice pergola or trellis over the bench and get some hops planted to climb up the back and over. Even if you don't harvest and use them the hop fragrance off them and the look they give is just enchanting. Old native variety such as Cobb or Goldings would work very well, or even Prima Donna which is a dwarf hop. Crocs and socks....proper man ;)
Damn straight about Dot and the cat on the bench. What a lovely job on the gate and bench. Thanks for sharing.
That's a beautiful gate! And a bench! And tomatoes! Well done!

All the best to Dot - who must be obeyed, you - who should obey. Also to the fierce Tiger and rest of fauna. I never knew how a barn is built. Cheers from Vancouver Island
It’s amazing how the temp difference between England and Australia is so far apart…I live in out back Western Australia…our summer temps are between 38 and 45 daily for months ..it does get hard here at times .night time temps get up to 30 c ….Drink heaps mate
Really enjoy the odd job videos - its what got me hooked at the start. General all round handy man stuff. Shed is great to watch but need this interspersed. Happy with whatever I get really - thanks Kris.
Now there's a proper gate and bench! Beautiful work, as always. We just had a month straight of temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit daily here in Louisiana, getting up to 110 on the hottest day, breaking all historical records. We're past the climate tipping point.
Love these videos where you’re doing “small” jobs and upkeep. My dream is to be doing this same kind of thing one day.
Hi 👋, I am New to your Homestead Project, very interesting, well done, It looking 👀 Great, A lot of work, to become self sufficient, I started something similar in 2003 , my ex partner and I purchased a property dating back to the 1600s in the Uk , for many years and then 2013. We bought a property in France, an old mill and over the years I’ve been working on both properties., the property in France, we were supposed to have moved into her retirement age, and become self-sufficient in some respect, just to find that I’ve been scammed, she was trying to take the whole lot away from me, even my business, I am a specialist Joiner, cabinet maker, property developer, I am now retired and living in France, I find it very interesting how different people in different parts of the world managed to take the plunge and go off grid , And it’s amazing what people have achieved , I wish you all the success for the future, Phil from the moulin France.
It’s great to see you wearing those ear muffs, my brother suffers from industrial related hearing loss, When you are young you feel bullet proof and run around without your PPE, And then in later life there comes the horrible moment when have to admit to yourself that you need a hearing aid.
Did you know that the chickens will be able to jump on top of that gate and over. The wings help them get the height. My neighbour had chickens and a fox came in and one chicken was in the tree
great video again! would like to see/ hear an update about the hydro system? just a quick lookover about how it's doin?
You are a true craftsman young man.
Lobours of love are always so satisfying to undertake and complete! And labour it was in that heat and humidity. Well done!
Great video as always. Only that could make it better is disclosing where you got that hat that works with the hearingprotection😂😂

Dot made it for me :)
You have my full sympathy on this one ,I’ve been landscaping this week putting in a small patio,spitlocking/channelling out 1 x 28m of turf to accommodate some eco grid for 2 ton of gravel. I had to break the days up 2hours on 2hours off ( like stagging on again) as the humidity was absolutely brutal. I’m an ex Sapper and haven’t experienced such harsh conditions since I served in Bosnia in the Summer of 95. My son who’s never had a manual job was wilting like a limp cabbage leaf after an hour. Fantastic end product as usual Chris and especially so in these conditions.

That gate is almost as much impressive as the tomato jungle...both of you did a great job! But it wouldn't be nothing without the Puss supervising it... 🤣👍👍👍
Amazing craftsmanship as always Kris
Great bit of fencing there Kris! It was good to see the barn in the background - I did not realise how close it was to the garden area.
Lovely gate, surrounded by an ugly fence :D Great work as always Kris, looking forward to the next one
Hey Kris
What a lovely video, thanks Kris, now my Sunday is fully chilled out :)
I’ve not watched this channel for a while but Jezz what a clever man and very humble ❤
I think the gate looks unique … very well done, and solid, you can tell. Love it. Oh, a pergola above the bench would be lovely
It has been hard work doing jobs outside, the earth is hard to put holes in for anything. Somehow at the end of each hot day I felt as if my work has value. Your skill set is worth watching I can learn while being entertained. Birdy
Don’t put yourself down Kris. you’re very talented.
I've been watching since the 1st roundhouse video. I must say your homestead is lovely.
Your little homestead has come a long way in the last year or two. good job on the fence, gate and bench.
I’m with you on the heat brother, I’m a gardener and the one thing that stops me is the heat, brutal is the word!
My comment disappeared. If it doesn’t come back I’ll retype in morning. Normal clothes for Australia in summer. Missing t shirt if male and a bikini top if female. No problemo.. a magical gate for a magical mystical garden. Live long and prosper. Enjoy. 🇦🇺🎸⚡️🤘🏼🤘🏿💋❤️
As an Aussie, the weather sound perfect hahah. Beautiful works as always.
Making things of quality so that they will outlive you. An old Quote… “Society becomes great when old men plant trees the shade of which they know they will never sit under”
Thanks for posting and sharing. Nice to see bench and gate with the barn as a backdrop.
You’re not alone complaining about that heat & humidity it kills me! That’s a gate worthy of a castle, respect 💪
The gate is beautiful for one made of leftover wood. Well done.
Love that gate and garden!
