Jobs Around The Farm And Barn Raising Update

Hi everyone, its been while since I last uploaded a video. I have been re thinking the method of raising the barn in a way that I find less stressful. I have set a plan in place and we will start putting it up soon.
We have also had some issues with the lambs. they got some foot issues so we had to sort them out. We also hatched 9 goslings recently and they need a new home so I made a timber and mesh house for them to keep the fox out at night.

You and Dot are shining beacons of hope on this mad planet and the fact that you do it yourself as much as you can is why over 500,000 people subscribe to your channel and keep coming back to see your progress is tantamount to who you are and what you do. The barn will be a roaring success however you achieve it and we are all looking forward to partaking in the continuing journey. Carry on being you Kris and with Dot on board it will be epic and rewarding.

I watch your channel expressly because you love doing things that challenge you, not because you love things done. I feel a kinship with you in that regard. My feeling about your channel changed as you geared up for a large team cutting the joinery and putting up your barn. I was excited to see the barn go up but couldn't describe why I wasn't as excited as I'd been in the past for your projects. You described it exactly - it stopped being about learning and challenging your self while building and became about getting something built. I'm so grateful and pleased that your channel will return to what's always drawn me to your work; you sharing _your_ experiences about learning and making things. Thank you!!

To make things yourself and being a Jack of all trades are the things that make life more rewarding and satisfying. Anyone can say I paid to get that done. To do things yourself and learn by your mistakes is far more satisfying than paying some so called expert. My father was the one who showed me Enginuity. You are a lucky man and a great inspiration to me. Thanks Kris.

Kris, that was amazingly enjoyable, and the fact that you're smart enough to do what you love is what keeps us coming back. I think we all secretly wish we could escape the grind like you did, and I really think the pressure of "put the barn up in 3 weeks" was reminding you way too much of the grind. Speaking from experience of building quite a few barns sometimes it’s easier to stop, take a break, go a bit slower and not get stressed. We built a 60’ by 50’ barn lifting big Timbers by hand, ropes, a cheap tower scaffolding etc It took us 2 years but we kept costs to a minimum…

Chris, it’s so nice to hear you refer to your new family members as “him” or “her” and not “it.” To many people that seems like a small or silly distinction, but it’s a HUGE leap in how one looks at other living being. When one calls a goose or a cat or whomever an “it” you make it into a thing, like a hammer or a shoe. But when a goose has gender, they become someone special. You are recognizing that they are a living, breathing, feeling creature. Keep it up.

This episode I think highlights a really fundamental point for this account that is relevant to us all. In engaging external help for the barn build it was evident to see how Kris' ownership of the project slowly shifted. There was a subtle but clear loss of control and a shift from the joy and satisfaction of doing a job yourself to managing others doing a job for you. This is exactly the opposite of what Kris and Dot represent to me and it doesn't surprise me that the internal conflict for Kris led to a loss of interest in the whole project. Kris your ability to recognise this and halt immediately (despite the great risks and pressure your outlined) is hugely courageous and as you've shown in this episode once again, by grounding yourself in owning your own life and the many tasks (which we might prefer to off-load to others) we actually gain much much more.

Absolutely get everything you described - I got myself in a pickle, with a team of lovely builder friends, doing a complete rebuild with natural materials of my terraced house in Bristol a few years back. Had I known the stress of having 6 people on site - the pace at which things would move, the pressure on me to be constantly getting more materials on site, and the rate at which money would be leaving the budget ... I'd have said "thanks, but no thanks". I stopped the madness after two weeks, and despite it taking me 6 years to finish it myself, it was absolutely joyous in comparison. Conventional building is all about time, rushing to the finish line, and nothing about taking the time needed to fully express your creativity, and to feel your way to solutions. Really glad you're back in your groove, and look forward to watching for the next umpteen years as you continue to unfold plans on your land. Enjoy it :)

Dont blame you. That session in the big barn was a bit of a race against the clock, though fascinating watching the men at work.

I have huge respect for you; and also for your preferred way of working. However, please don’t forget to appreciate the people helping. Especially the ones at the barn. Don’t say you do… just think that help can’t be appreciated enough. Enjoy your progress.

I just found your channel today as I was searching for timber built post and beam barn videos. I am planning to mill lumber from trees off of my property to build a horse barn, and your attitude and ways of working greatly appeal to me. I am really happy to hear your decision to raise your barn on your own and in your own time. Very much looking forward to those videos! Thank you for taking the time to share your lifestyle with us.

Kris. Glad to see you have made peace with the barn and have a way forward. Good lessons for the house when you get to that point. also - it was brilliant to see Dot showing her Welsh heritage with that flying tackle on the poorly sheep. Get her signed up for the national team it would be amazing to see her at Twickenham

You need to make a weight for the back of your tractor, most farmers use a 40 gallon drum, put a bar through it and fill it with weak concrete, rocks, stones, old iron etc

Kris, I have had over 40 years in construction with all the stress that can entail ,I have recently had a real crisis of confidence and motivation , primarily to do with the weight of decisions that affect production and finance ,I understand exactly how you are feeling and have made the same decision as you . Enjoy your build it’s going to be a masterpiece.

Hi Kris, Love your reasoning for changing the barn raising plan: 1. Putting mental health first. 2. Keeping in perspective that the barn need not go up in an instant. 3. Cost containment 4. Will require creative thinking for lifting all the parts [good for #1] 5. Seriously better sense of satisfaction when it's up [good for #1] 6. GREAT content for the channel! [good for all of us viewers!] 7. Environmentally friendlier [good for the planet!] Keep up the good work and good thinking. Err on the side of safety and caution! I'll be watching. Hello to Dot! XO
