Timber Framed Barn Part 19 Finishing the framing

I finally got time to get back on to working on the barn after taking a break form it to do the waterwheel. In this video I mange to get the last of the timber framing done and lifted in to position and fixed to the foundations.

@@wileycoyotesr8623 I get that and there is Bradshaw joinery for example that is also far superior. He is doing one of these projects on his channel right now. You didn't get the point. What Shawn James achieves with the recourses he has and more or less out in the wilderness is quite impressive. I watch Kris because his skillset in may areas like power gen are very impressive. This is to be fair his 2nd stab at post and beam type construction, with the first being the greenhouse. I live in Pennsylvania and there are a ton of timber frame builders. Another thing we have leaned is to use white cedar instead of oak. I own a woodworking shop with machines from Felder and even CNCs. What I know about white oak is it is an open pour wood and from being green will shrink as it gives up moisture content. I've seen structures that the joints open up and can become dangerous with the shrinkage. White cedar does not shrink, insects don't eat it and it is non-permius. I own a 5,500 sq. ft English Tudor style house made 100% of red brick. I have a plan to do 2 large additions on the back of the house that will be done in post and beam. I study these guys to se what I can learn in addition to a new technique I plan to use that will have the inside and outside frames visible and the walls filled in and properly insulated on the interior of the frame sections. In the old days wattle and dawb was used. Can't use that here, but I have come up with another method that will meet the R insulation code and local building code also.

Yes, good idea, but at the end of the day it’s a farm shed/ barn. We had a lot of farm buildings that were very old early eighteen hundreds i guess, they had iron brackets all over the place holding the various beams, rafters and joists together, nobody ever said a word and they weren’t painted at all.

That initial beam lifting reminded me why some of our old barns has a beam/truss sticking out right under the pitch of the roof. Sometimes even covered by shingles or tiny roofing. And there are usually then a big door in 1st floor. To simply put on a block and tackle to that beam and hoist heavy/large stuff to the first floor of the barn.

I watched the water wheel episodes but was waiting with expectation for the this installment of the barn build. I have to say that I am totally intrigued with the build. I am not sure whether it is the build or the ingenious ways you find to move these heavy timbers into position. You are also so lucky to have Dot and friends to give you a hand. Great work Kris and best wishes from Australia.

Very, very nice, well done Kris. A project that you can be very proud of (like so many of the others). The woodwork on top of the concrete foundation will stand for decades.
