Timber Framed Barn Part 10 Cross Frame One Complete

The week we managed to get one of the end cross frames done. the ends are quite complex because they have the braces that tie in to the truss so it took a while but the next ones will be quicker.
We also had some more lambs this week.

The more I see of this building the more I think this is how a barn would have been built several hundred years ago. Everything you do, Kris, is way over kill so your barn will probably stand at least 500 years! No use doing a job twice; do it right the first time! I enjoy watching your life happen. 🐑

I found the chapters in kzread.infoUgkxYGamVaHfdHiPlAQaLa7zkwR02OKpGYDU to be very relevant to my project as I embarked on building my first ever structure from the ground up. I especially found this Ryan’s Shed Plans to be of great use when it came to building the roof. I was able to do all the cuts and installation by myself, with a little reference to this Ryan’s Shed Plans.

I have pulled dozens of lambs - stuck in the sheep. Always amazes me to be able to walk to sheep and they stand still and allow me to reach deep inside of them to correct the lamb and pull it out. The amount of trust that the animals can give to you when in stress, is amazing! I have medium hands - but big muscles arms - so it is not easy for them.

After watching all the build videos of your house, various outbuildings and especially your shop I've been impressed by your timber work - especially the round timber work done with no reference edges. It took you quite a while to get that shop building done single handed with occasional help. This would have taken you the whole summer just to cut the joinery. This is an awesome design and it is all coming together really nicely. This crew is really making it possible for you to get this thing done and hopefully completed this year. It's going to be lovely, if you'll pardon my sad, American attempt at a Britishism.

That timberwork is absolutely marvelous. I built a lot of utility barns and workshops and halls over the last couple decades, partly with complicated statics and steel-rod or wire cables for tension members and weird stuff like fishbellied girders and composite girders, but never did I have the time or the means to build an "orthodox" construction like Your barn here. Makes me slightly envious to be honest. What a beautiful way to do it. Thank You for sharing that colossal build!

The omish and Mennonite communities in America build all thier barns without using power tools and use wood pegs to connect all the timbers. They all come togeather as a group and there can be a couple hundred men who will erect a huge timber framed barn in a day. Google omish barn raising on u tube . It's really amazing to watch so many men who still use old time honored skills that have been almost forgotten in our modern fast paced world.
