    Ive used a big rockwell machine and a microscope to test hardness. Don’t have the money or need to buy that equipment if one of these will work. Have a parts kit Im putting together and had to use a different trunnion. The one I got is like butter though. Hoping this tester will give me an idea of where the real trunnion is vs the butter one I got. So I can heat treat accordingly. Thanks for your in depth look!

    @@TheMiniMachineShop this wasn't my first attempt, I tried to make a carriage stop 2 years ago and it didn't work out so well, I made 10 attempts, and none of them worked. Hi Dave, Thanks for your video on the console repair. I also own a 2001 740i and love it. Owned it for 19 years now. And, on a different subject, as you probably know the air conditioning on this car can be extremely musty and produce fowl odors. Have attempted to unsuccessfully fix the problem long term. Have you ever resolved this odor issue. If so, I'd really, really like to know the answer. I've been struggling with this for well over 10 years. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks much for your help, Alan

    Just sold mine finally. Parts are getting hard to find now. But to answer your question I never had an odor problem. I had replaced the carbon intake filters in the hood and all the carbon cabin filters but always had clean air. My guess is you have something bad in the condensation tray. I did have a rat die in the air duct of my wife's car.

    Fun to watch the conversion although I had trouble understanding anything you said. That's OK. I turned off the sound and turned on the captions. Worked out OK. The likely hood of an amateur machinist like me turning out any high quality work doesn't justify the expense of a bigger fancy lathe. I'm hardly a space shuttle machinist after all. One thing I've often wondered about is if they mostly come from the same or other factories in close proximity then why all the brand names? Reminds me of the old days in the US... in the late 19th century for instance, when virutally everyone in the countryside had a shotgun. They came branded to the hardware store chain in which they were sold. I have an old JC Higgins... Used to be a national brand. Conversions are fun. Give me something to do in my croaky old age.... Decrepitude here I come for fist lets modify this lathe.

    What a lot of people don’t realize is that both Hardinge, who invented the 5-C, and Bridgeport, who invented the R-8, intended them for either tooling (R-8) or precision machined first operation parts to be finished on their second operation lathes. So the collets are designed for accurately sized and actually round stock (not mill stock which is neither correctly sized, or round). Double angle collets that tighten from the front are designed to compress a bit and can be used for stock that’s not exactly round or exactly sized. They can be used for tooling as well, which is what I use them for, on my mill, though I use them for stock on my lathe. If you use ER collets, I highly recommend Techniks collets. They’re not very expensive, and they’re 0.0002”.

    Dave, I agree totally the Flexzilla hose is fantastic, its cheap, and it will standup to a lot of abuse. I learned many years ago that cheap quick-connects are garbage. I use only the Milton brand - they don't leak. As far as a topic for the future - do you have any kind of DIY water separator on your compressor? I'm talking about a DIY method to drop-out the free-water before it gets to the commonly used separator/filter/desiccant assembly. With heavy use those little silica-gel dryers don't last long. I'm considering either water cooled or air cooled.

  • @TheMiniMachineShop
    @TheMiniMachineShop2 ай бұрын

    Love Flexzilla sutuff! No, I don't feel the need for a separator after the compressor what I want is something to keep water from getting into the tank and rusting it. That is my biggest concern as I'm getting pin holes from rust.

    I'm looking forward to mine arriving. I ordered a rebranded sieg C2 from a company called Vevor and the bed was junk fresh out of the crate. The bottom of the ways were machined with about 3/32 of taper per foot so its impossible to use the tailstock. However it showed up to my door for 388 bucks so not complaining to much.
