I really wish I could help. Best I got is, Get a new helmet 🙂. Although I plan on adding welding to my shop someday and sharing that journey I have nothing to offer. Welder I Ain't. Now I really enjoyed this video and appreciate you sharing nearly the entire maching process of that replacement tip. I also have been struggeling with using Dies and you showing that has given me some ideas to try and improve my success. Also, I have got to get me a tailstock die holder or make one the issue would be trying to machine a proper MT2 taper. Not sure I am ready for that. I really think a die holder would help me out. Great video. Wish I was of some help...maybe someday :-)

With your helmet shade refer to darkening power 10 light shade 13 darker. Problem with small machine they don’f produce brighter flash as big machine. With 10 you should be in the range of your welder. Also you can add splatter protection. Those product help to prevent metal bubbles on your part and welging tip

Hi Dave, say on the welder and the helmet, first you can't do anything if you can't see through the helmet, so when you say you can't see, if it is changing to TOO DARK [you should set it at shade 9...this is what I set my helmet when welding with 110 volt .030" FC wire welder] If there is TOO MUCH Glare set to 10 but no more. I use the .030" FC wire it is best for these small FC welders, .035" will run too cold is my experience. I am also a senior w/ rx glasses. I find using a "cheater" 0r 2.5 magnifier in all my welding helmets helps me a great deal.

$100 price point have knobs that go 7-13. But that was 4 years ago so they might be $600 now. No issue on .030, or even Tig on sheet metal.

I take it you are welding flux core since I see no gas mix bottle ? What shade are you using on your mask. ? Mig is normally around 10 shade. Tig I use shade 11 - 12. The higher the number the darker the shade. You might have a defective screen in your helmet I think the default is. Totally dark to keep you from burning your retinas out. You should see clearly at first. Some florescent lights can trigger the screen to go dark. Sorry it’s hard to guess what kind of conditions your welding in.

Yes HF flux core .030 steel wire outside in the sun. I've tried shade 9 and 10 and 11. It's an $40 L500A helmet and I just ordered a Q800D helmet based on YT ratings.

I have the same helmet, I got it off Amazon to mess around with learning stick welding. The manual has a table of recommended shade levels for different processes and amps. Mine will trigger when I look at the shop lights directly. So you can use that to at least check if the shade knob is having any effect.

Rus shielding gas with your wire even tho it’s not required… fine-tune your wire, speed, feed rate and your heat knobs with that gas and you’ll have a beautiful world guaranteed for what I understand you may be welding outside for some of that. The gas still be all right any gas shielding is better than no gas shielding so if the wind blows a little bit of it away, it’s no big deal you have wire that dont require it anyways. Flux core welding wire is not going to give you a good looking weld, in order to get a better looking weld you’ll need to get a proper welding outfit that requires an inert gas such as argon which stabilizes the arc of the weld. You can go with an .035 if you are welding thicker steel but the results will remain the same. Using a thicker wire also requires a higher setting an a feed adjustment change.

.030 wire, limited with the amount of electricity you can push into the weld, giving yourself the best chance of success with the smaller wire.
