"" An artist's life on the mend."

These are chatty vlogs about getting back in the saddle as an artist after a long time of chronic pain. I specialize in watercolor and mixed media, but give me a jar of ink, a pen and some nibs and the chatty part of me quiets down. Completely. And if you know my vlogs, you'll understand that's a big thing. Oh, and oils can do that too.

I talk about anything that is somehow related to my work, ranging from supplies and techniques to the themes that inspire my work, which is very often the system of Life in all its aspects and how we as human beings fit into it, or are embedded in it.

My next goal is an art event late August 2024, so I'll be talking a lot about a new series of paintings I am working on for the occasion.

    I never buy expensive frames since I think he frame is a mannequin for the piece of art. And there to protect the art. When the customer buys it, they can change the frame if they so wish.

    @@MandyvanGoeije I only do it accidentally. I think it is best to do it with a wet brush, but not too wet. The trick is to have the paint dry within a couple of mins to make interesting effects. I’ve noticed that this technique gives me the most interesting results. A very wet brush or pre-wetting the paper causes strong back runs, which strongly suggests mistakes or poor techniques.

    As I stopped watching the news a few years back, I also had withdrawal symptoms for a few days. But I also noticed over time that my constant low to middle level anxiety just fizzled out and I came back to my base line. (What I really need to know comes to me anyway.) I do the same now with people, circumstances and situations that are triggering for me. I am careful what I put in my body. Why shouldn't I use the same care about what I let into my spirit? So, the 'news' had to go! Thank you for this wonderful update. By the way, I let youtube not feed me stuff. Yes, we do. It is high time for internationally coordinated legislation. I am preparing reporting this hack to the police. I've already been warned not to expect the hacker getting caught, but if many people report their issues, arrows will be pointing in directions eventually. And when hackers do get caught, all these reports will help their victims get justice. But it's a totally failing process in the short run. All I hope, is that Etsy will kick out the hacker and improve their security standards, for it's flawed tremendously. If I were them, I wouldn't want to be operating like that. So, fingers crossed...

  • @MandyvanGoeije

    You know, if Etsy uses those fees to create a safe environment for you to do your business in and if they keep your data and those of your customers safe, I think those fees are very reasonable. The cost of building a safe environment on your own website are much higher. I do think, however, that Etsy should better inform account holders of what information to keep in order to regain access to their accounts if they get compromised. And Etsy should disable any account that does not have 2FA on. I didn't because it probably got overlooked in a time of health issues. But I would have preferred a suspended account over a hacked one. 😊

    These are watercolour pencils, as their name suggests they are intended to be used for watercolouring with a brush, not like pencils. Should be used with CD sandy palette or just ordinary sandpaper and disolved with water. Extraordinary amount of pigment, hence the price. Top quality watercolours.

  • @soniad.2993
    @soniad.29933 ай бұрын

    From their website. Always investigate from the source, esp. when the product is rather expensive: For artists and professionals, opt for the Luminance 6901® sets : the pencils come in 100 colors and are 100% light resistant which combines up to 100 years of lightfastness with the creamy texture of a wax core. You could also opt for the Museum Aquarelle sets, though you should note that these are not actually colored pencils but extra fine watercolors in pencil form.

  • @MandyvanGoeije
    @MandyvanGoeije3 ай бұрын

    @@soniad.2993 Watercolor pencils should be versatile, in my opinion, especially such expensive ones. Why else make a PENCIL, normally used to to draw, of watercolor which is normally a medium to paint with? Doesn't their form in itself imply versatility? It is preposterous of a brand to expect people to purchase both the expensive museum aquarelle and the luminance. If you are fortunate enough to be able to afford both, keep in mind that most people are not. So, as I know that my students expect versatility of a watercolor pencil that works both great when used wet or dry, it is my personal recommendation to go for another kind like the Albrecht Dürer by Faber Castell or the Supracolor. And as I expect any watercolor pencil to do great both wet and dry, I haven't found it in myself to enjoy these pencils, despite their lovely colours.

  • @soniad.2993
    @soniad.29933 ай бұрын

    @@MandyvanGoeije I do apologize if my comment was a bit harsh, but so many people buy expensive stuff on a whim and sometimes they do get disappointed, which is totally understandable. I do that as well. What I wanted to say is that these pencils are watercolours and nothing else and are advertised as such. As an amateur watercolourist, I had been dwelling on the idea of buying them for quite some time, due to their hefty price. Initially, I bought three colours only and was shocked by their quality. I generally use them on the go with a water pencil, for sketching and outlining (instead of a pencil), as they do merge when water is applied. Also, they are really expensive when compared to the normal colouring pencils, but for watercolouring they are rather cheap, considering the amount of pigment they contain. And they last forever. Best xx

  • @MandyvanGoeije
    @MandyvanGoeije4 ай бұрын

    hmmmmm....I don't know if I agree, or actually I don't think I do. I would recommend a brand like Van Gogh that does have flow for beginners who want to learn watercolor painting in the sense of painterly tecniques. Mijello has beautiful vibrant colors, but would be something I'd recommend for beginners more inclined to an illustrative style that you don't need flow for. Flow is one of the most important characteristics for watercolorists and will help a beginner learn a totally different way of working that one can never learn when working with brands like Mijello, Gansai Tanbi and Old Holland that don't have those characteristics. So it really depends on what style and way of working people are looking for. But once used to the flow-free paints, I think it will be very hard to get used to the more flowy ones.

    Loved this. Love all of your videos in fact, and thanks so much! :) Two questions: 1. Among the Kremers only, did you have any favorites? I think you did mention working a lot lately with 501798 (Royal Gold Satin), but was that your favorite, or just one you happened to be using for a certain piece? Would you share any thoughts on when you would choose one vs another? 2. In a previous review (At least I thnk previous) you also mentioned liking the Schmicke Aqua-Bronze Tri-Col golds. Those were not part of this review, but if you woudn't mind re-visiting old ground, i would love to hear your thoughts on the uses of Kremer vs those liqudy aqua bronzes. Or even just an update on your gold(s) of choice. Either way, wonderful as usual and thanks so much! Congrats on the adorable new puppy by the way. :)

  • @MandyvanGoeije

    Thanks! As for your two questions...All Kremer metallic watercolors work equally awesome. Some are a little more pearlescent and some a little more metallic, but their workability is fab. In my experience the best. The color that I use depends on the colors I work with to form a contrast with the gold. I definitely prefer the more metallic golds,but among those, they are all my favorites. If you're thinking about trying one, I do'nt think you can go wrong with any of them. Personally I don't like working with the powdered golden gouache because of the hassle. They are very metallic, so they are beautiful when you know how to handle them. Maybe I'm clumsy, but with me it's always a hassle. So, with awesome Kremer golden watercolor, why bother? I do know some pen artists who are blazingly enthusiastic, though, abou the powdered version and who don't like the Kremer, so it really so depends on your way of working... If you're going to try any of these, I'd like to hear how you've experienced them. :-)
