My Etsy got hacked. Beware of pretenders!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This week my Etsy account was hacked. The process of regaining access to my account with Etsy support has been ongoing for almost a week now. Therefore I want to warn anybody who's been an Etsy contact of mine or who's favorited my courses and paintings to beware that if anybody contacts you through Etsy, saying they're me, they're not! And even outside Etsy it's unlikely I should contact you just like that, so that would probably not be me either.
Hopefully Etsy will help me resolve this issue soon. I will keep you up to date.

Shoot, that is so annoying! Etsy is getting worse and worse. I am so sorry for this. Also, I liked the video but just to support you, Mandy, not because I like what happened.

So sorry you are dealing with this nightmare. These scammer thieves are pure evil. We need severe consequences for these crooks.

Yes, we do. It is high time for internationally coordinated legislation. I am preparing reporting this hack to the police. I've already been warned not to expect the hacker getting caught, but if many people report their issues, arrows will be pointing in directions eventually. And when hackers do get caught, all these reports will help their victims get justice. But it's a totally failing process in the short run. All I hope, is that Etsy will kick out the hacker and improve their security standards, for it's flawed tremendously. If I were them, I wouldn't want to be operating like that. So, fingers crossed...

I'm so sorry this happened to you! Thank you for the advice. I will be keeping logs of all of that info for all of my work accounts. I am only just starting on Etsy but I don't like that they charge a fee for each listing even if the listing doesn't ever have a sale. I'm probably not going to focus my efforts on Etsy for much longer.

You know, if Etsy uses those fees to create a safe environment for you to do your business in and if they keep your data and those of your customers safe, I think those fees are very reasonable. The cost of building a safe environment on your own website are much higher. I do think, however, that Etsy should better inform account holders of what information to keep in order to regain access to their accounts if they get compromised. And Etsy should disable any account that does not have 2FA on. I didn't because it probably got overlooked in a time of health issues. But I would have preferred a suspended account over a hacked one. 😊

there's an estimate that something like 80% of the activity online is trolls and/or automated bots and scripts. That always terrifies me.

Yikes, those are staggering numbers. Online crime IS terrifying. Especially because so often people don't know it is happening to them until much later. We must be on our guard all the time. Even if we think we've never been hacked. In reality, we often don't know.

No. The study you are referring to was an algorithm could find and identify trolls and bots with an 80% accuracy. Don't just repeat things, look them up.

@@NiaLaLa_V I HAVE looked them and done statistical research on this for an outside project. Every day the troll/automated response literally multiplies based on engagement with those original posts, so the numbers are much higher than you think. By the time the study is published, because of the engagement with the original posts and the response from the troll/automated accounts to that engagement, the number has grown exponentially.
