Roman Szmal Aquarius Urban Sketching Box and Meeting Roman IRL
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Last Summer I met Roman Szmal in real life. Finally!
It was lovely meeting him and talking about watercolor and pigments and when I was there, he gave me a new set of his watercolor paints: The Urban Sketching Box of 12 half pans. In this video I talk about the meeting and about this wonderful set of paints that I’m sure any sketcher - urban or landscape - would love. Disclaimer: I’m in no means affiliated, nor paid to do this video. I simply like to share my experience with paints and that is not tainted by any reward system.

It was your original swatching videos (both the Livestream and the pre-recorded ones) that introduced me to this brand back then, and since, I've acquired almost the entire line. I genuinely love them, and always have fun while painting with them. And the unique colors are just fabulous. I'm grateful that you shared this treasure with us!

First, I love your pepperonis obtusifolia in the background. Mine kind of looks a little sad right now. It’s in the “hospital section’ of the house right now. I started out as a makeup artist/esthetician and then had to have lung surgery and found watercolor. I have really been enjoying learning different techniques, but I could swatch colors and write down pigment info all day long.

Watercolor heals! As do pigments. :-) Pigment addiction may be added to the DSM criteria as a new disorder, but boy can it be healing! ;-) And getting to know pigments is a great step in learning watercolor painting, so swatching away is awesome! My Pepperonis looks really sad right now too. I am guessing they make them grow really pretty in greenhouses and that when you take them home they can't bear the barbaric environment we put them in...
Thanks for this review!

@@MandyvanGoeije so excited. I also got the Blue Ridge Raw & Burnt Siennas, which are mountains near me in the states. The colors are rich, warm and exactly like the dirt here. So cool. The Artur Prysbysz set is nice too. A brand that's lovely and inspiring, abs and sparks joy!
I will gladly comment to help the algorithm because I love all of your videos. I learn so much and it feels like a conversation with a friend who shares the same interest. @@MandyvanGoeije I love them! The only two watercolor paintings I've done that I truly like were with this set. I'm going to keep working with it primarily for now. If jacksons has any black Friday sales, I'm going to get the Mona set. 🙂
Did Roman kept cadmiums and cobalts out of the urban sketches box intentionally? If yes I appreciate it. If no then it's a nice coincidence for a palette that is used outdoors.
@MandyvanGoeije
Жыл бұрын
Ooohh...good question. I don't remember if he said he left the cadmiums and cobalts out on purpose. Roman did explain a lot about the composition of this set and the interaction with artists about it and I remember much of it, but not that. I didn't think of it with regards to outside painting, but indeed, that is a very good point. Good thinking!
I really love the mad unpredictability of watercolour pigments and seem to have a relationship of kinds with every different one! I guess I am very nerdy and affected by colour, often just pure colour or the relationship of one colour to another! So Szmal Aquarius is right up my street, like Kremer and a few other interesting makes. I love Szmal though! I had not seen this set till today, it is mainly colours I do not already have. So you have set off my desire again. I am currently in love with that heavily granulating black and what it does to different colours, just fabulous. I forget what Szmal calls is, I have a Kremer one two that separates into grainy black and a wonderful creamy colour. I wish I had found anyone who has these conversations before now. Most artists use water colour in a very controlled way, in thin washes, etc. I just want it to do it’s magic! And it really lifts my spirits when it does so. I think I may put together a full pan palette based on this set, maybe making some substitute for colours I already own. The lovely thing about this brand is you are really spoiled for choice!

Sorry for setting off your watercolor desire again, Lindy. I hope your piggy bank doesn't suffer too much... but that's probably hard as indeed, Aquarius does offer a HUGE range of pigments.... I don't own all colors, but there's a few boxes on my painting table at the moment that need to be re-arranged and given new color charts as I need to try and bring them all together in a few designated box sets. They are absolutely lovely, indeed.
Thank you for the video! I enjoyed listening to you. I am the same about pigments! I see them everywhere. I was recently in a bike shop choosing a helmet like "this no, this no, oooh, this is PY129, yes, I take this". As for the palette. I would definitely buy it. But RS paints are coming very slowly to Italy. It's been some time I am waiting to have Ginger Red, Iron Chrome Brown and Manganese Brown available here. I was so curious to try these new colors! As for the half pans in the palette I think they better come up with tubes to refill them than with half pans ;)
@MandyvanGoeije
Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! Tubes would be great and I asked Roman about that. He explained that it requires lots of research and development for the right paint consistency (so that the paint doesn't dry up with big dents in the pans when the water evaporates and that the paint's still as good in the pans years after you pour it in) and it requires a huge industrial line for the production of the liquid paint, the tubing and the wrapping. I agree that it would be a great addition to this brand, but I understand that maybe it takes a little more of our patience :-) By the way, last week I heard that Kunstburg also ships the Roman Szmal pans to other countries in Europe. You could always ask about the shipping costs. If a few pans fit in a standard letter, it might not be too expensive...
That’s a wonderful gift to be a “color whisperer”! What a blessing! I’m not especially a great freehand artist, but more of an accidental artist with paints. Lol I love making paints too. I wish I had time to just paint all day. 😁 Edit: I adore RS paints!
@MandyvanGoeije

Aw Lori, an accidental artist with paints is the best way to start. In fact, most of my work holds a lot of accidental elements and moments. They are always better than the things I come up with beforehand. I wish you lots of painting time♥

@@MandyvanGoeije Awe, that’s sweet of you! I’ve only been watercolor painting for a year, I’m nearly 68 (later starter) but I’ve been crafting, monoprinting etc for a long time. Ahhhh it was so good to see you again. I love Roman Szmal. Didn't in the beginning. Had a bit of a fight with them. Now I can't remember why. Because they really are my go to watercolor paint. And I have almost every brand under the sun. Love to hear you chat about colors. Hope that KZread keeps playing nice. I would be very dissappointed if they went on the same route as FB and Insta. Thank you so much, Bojoura. I remember you had some kickstart problems with Roman Szmal and I'm glad to hear how it's turned around. Means RS did something really well. I loved that about him, that he listens so well to what artists are looking for in a paint. Not too sure about KZread, though...they are pushing creators to make shorts to compete with tiktok and insta reels and they're really changing the way they treat us. I hear it's everywhere. Even on Skillshare, apparently. But should YT stop working for us, we'll probably find new places to hang out, new ways to show our work and talk about our pigment madness :-)

@@MandyvanGoeije It would be nice to find another online space that is more chill. And if everything fails we still can have our own website. But I really like the interaction. I feel a bit sad. Feels like an era is coming to an end. But like you said. We will find another way. Creators always do...:)
The set contains the following full-pan watercolour paints. (note: Roman Szmal pans are slightly thicker than standard full-pans, so they might not fit properly in palettes that have fixed slots for standard size pans - for example, a White Nights empty palette would need some careful trimming first) Quinophthalone Yellow (362), Pyrrole Scarlet (319), Quinacridone Magenta (332), Ultramarine Intense (254), Blue Sky (226), Shadow Grey (259), Sap Green Light (252), Aquarius Green (346), Buff Titanium (201), Gold Ochre (109), Italian Burnt Sienna (120) y Cyprus Burnt Umber (130).

The myth of the cause of muddy colors. Using opaque watercolors and using multi pigment colors. Both myths. Muddy colors come from dibbly dabbing with a small brush and also using a brush to small for the area and using scrubbing motions to apply a minimum of pigment. Opaque colors applied quickly and generously in a juicy mix so as not to touch the area more than once will result in luminous vibrancy on cotton paper.
@AmandaMG6
Жыл бұрын
Agreed! And unpopular opinion ... there's nothing wrong with many muddy colors. They should be rather dull in some pieces with clean colors only in the focal points
@MandyvanGoeije
Жыл бұрын
Well...I agree with that...in part. It also really depends on the paint you're using. Cotton paper is a must in this case, but the paints are important too. I tried Lukas two years ago...awful! So many muddy mixes, even with few pigments in the game. Don't know what they do with their paints, but it definitely didn't feel like artist quality to me.
@MandyvanGoeije
Жыл бұрын
@@AmandaMG6 true. Although as I wrote above, some brands can go really muddy in a way that you don't want or expect. But with regards to muddiness being pretty in work...many of my tree worlds have a high degree of 'muddiness'...
@lindyashford7744
Жыл бұрын
Oh goodness yes. This myth is so prevalent and yet some of the major brands are making a killing off actually selling us preprepared multi pigment paints at such high prices. It is a myth that kills experimentation because people are so scared of mud whereas really they just have to learn the nature of their pigments and to play with their capabilities. Have to say I am also enjoying Rosa Gallery Watercolours too…. The freedom of large pans that do not demand your arms and legs in return…..
I think you can just put the full pans in the tray. And rather than gluing the pans to the palette, just use tack, then you can remove them or change them whenever you like.
@MandyvanGoeije
Жыл бұрын
Absolutely, tack or magnetic tape would work really well for that.
PB28 is where it's at. You can push it towards green easily enough, but you can't push his PG50 to be more blue than it is, even though the pigment is beautiful. Which orange is the cleanest do you think? I've encountered some that almost have a brownish twinge to them that is not the clean orange I was looking for.
@MandyvanGoeije
Жыл бұрын
The cleanest orange?...that is a tough question...I personally love Pyrrole oranges, but you might feel they are still a tad too much towards earth tones. If you want absolutely no brown, I think the safest is to mix a strong yellow with a fierce and bright red, but then choose an azo yellow or else you'll have a semi-opaque color. I love pyrrole oranges, but I also really love warmer oranges, but those would go towards brown, like the quinacridones. What if you mix PV19, or PR122 magenta, with an azo yellow? Or with the Roman Szmal's Quinophthalone yellow, PY138? Pyrrole scarlet PR255 would do the job instead of magenta as well, but seems a little duller in my opinion. Quinacridone magenta might just give it a good vibrancy.
