Caran d'Ache Museum aquarelle - very first impression (it's not good)

I swatched my 20 single bought Caran d'Ache Museum Aquarelle watercolor pencils and there is a problem. At least, for me.

These are watercolour pencils, as their name suggests they are intended to be used for watercolouring with a brush, not like pencils. Should be used with CD sandy palette or just ordinary sandpaper and disolved with water. Extraordinary amount of pigment, hence the price. Top quality watercolours.

From their website. Always investigate from the source, esp. when the product is rather expensive: For artists and professionals, opt for the Luminance 6901® sets : the pencils come in 100 colors and are 100% light resistant which combines up to 100 years of lightfastness with the creamy texture of a wax core. You could also opt for the Museum Aquarelle sets, though you should note that these are not actually colored pencils but extra fine watercolors in pencil form.

@@soniad.2993 Watercolor pencils should be versatile, in my opinion, especially such expensive ones. Why else make a PENCIL, normally used to to draw, of watercolor which is normally a medium to paint with? Doesn't their form in itself imply versatility? It is preposterous of a brand to expect people to purchase both the expensive museum aquarelle and the luminance. If you are fortunate enough to be able to afford both, keep in mind that most people are not. So, as I know that my students expect versatility of a watercolor pencil that works both great when used wet or dry, it is my personal recommendation to go for another kind like the Albrecht Dürer by Faber Castell or the Supracolor. And as I expect any watercolor pencil to do great both wet and dry, I haven't found it in myself to enjoy these pencils, despite their lovely colours.

@@MandyvanGoeije I do apologize if my comment was a bit harsh, but so many people buy expensive stuff on a whim and sometimes they do get disappointed, which is totally understandable. I do that as well. What I wanted to say is that these pencils are watercolours and nothing else and are advertised as such. As an amateur watercolourist, I had been dwelling on the idea of buying them for quite some time, due to their hefty price. Initially, I bought three colours only and was shocked by their quality. I generally use them on the go with a water pencil, for sketching and outlining (instead of a pencil), as they do merge when water is applied. Also, they are really expensive when compared to the normal colouring pencils, but for watercolouring they are rather cheap, considering the amount of pigment they contain. And they last forever. Best xx

Thank you for this review. It was just what I needed to know. So many reviewers use art supplies in ways they're not primarily intended, and I think watercolor pencils should be able to be used as soluble pencils, not as pure watercolor in stick format.. So some people review them by scratching them on a piece of sandpaper and then picking them up with a paintbrush. That's one way of using them but that's not their primary function. I have bought a couple of museum aquarelle pencils of lighter colors and I found they were very creamy and pigmented to use like almost pastel pencils on black paper, so I thought about buying the full set of 76. But now that I saw your review where you mentioned some were scratchy, I definitely found I had to try them out in the store, one by one, first to see which ones work in the good way.

You're welcome. I'm glad to have been of help. I think it's a great idea to try them out for yourself first. That is the best thing to do with these pencils. Two of my artist friends have extremely opposite experiences. One loves them to bits and the other one sold her complete set on after just a week because she hated them. I think it's definitely worth a visit to an art store. Will you let me know if you buy them? I'm curious.

They work well with the Luminance and Pablos and work best as watercolour pencils. I use them as a base and their colour pencil colours to finish. I am in love with them. Sorry you don’t like them. Keep creating 💛💙💜

I haven’t used my Museum Aquarelle pencils in a long time (much too long) but remember having a good impression of them. (I usually like smoother pencils.) I wonder if the manufacturing or formulas changed, but of course each artist’s style factors in. I’ll have to take them out for a drive again.

Yes, it really depends on your workflow, I think. For me, watercolor pencils come in for detailing in the finishing stage of a painting, so that's when you do NOT want hard and scatchy materials. And it also depends on the surface your work on. I love their colors, I really do, I just wish they were heaps softer...

Yes. It depends on what you want to do with them. They give off really awesome color, but now that I've tried them out more, they remain very hard and to me uncomfortable when applying on watercolor paper. So if used only wet, I think they can be great. In dry application not so much. At least, to me. I'll stick to my supracolors and Dürers.

  • @KattReen

That's a lot of pigment. If you're only using them for the intended use, you'd probably have a pretty good time with these I think. I often use watercolor pencils on the more affordable end of the spectrum for just doodling and coloring. They're usually pretty soft, give off a lot of pigment, are easy to get full coverage with, and blend pretty well. And most importantly, they feel the best to use. Using them for that wears them down pretty quickly though lol. I also like using white watercolor pencils as blenders at every opportunity I get lol. Idk, I just like how it looks. I always have to buy one or two extra in white because I know I'm going to be using them for shenanigans.

If you look at other brands, these come out as the most 'lightfast'.. I wanted to try out Faber Castell first until I noticed HALF of the 120 color pencil box are 4 stars or less. I will give them a try first in the studio I work prior to 'buying them' for myself. Thanks for sharing your experience. Wouldn't the roughness of the paper matter? I use 'hot press' at home

  • @MandyvanGoeije

    @MandyvanGoeije

Maybe it does. I also work on hot press and that paper can be a bit hard on pencils. On the other hand I feel that such an expensive brand should do good on any kind of paper, especially the expensive ones like hot press. It would be logical that a brand like this would be used on such paper, I think. I know many Dürers are not lightfast, but they do incredibly well as color pencils in their own right. Recently I found out that there are certain fixatives you can lay over watercolor paintings that should make them more lightfast, but I want to look into that some more. Then lightfastness wouldn't be such an issue anymore.

That is a tough question. Do you mean watercolor pencils or watercolor paint? Watercolor pencils at the moment FaberCastell Albrecht Dürer. Watercolor paint...I did a lot of reviews about them. It depends on the technique I want to use them for, but equally great to me are Roman Szmal Aquarius, Rembrandt, Horadam, Sennelier and Daniel Smith. Those are the brands I have in my composed go-to sets of paint.

👏❤ It is really odd that Green Ochre has a 3*. I'm surprised they didn't use more lightest pigments. Maybe it's the pigment combination that affected lightfastness. What is even 😱😭is that the Dark Ultramarine is also a 3*. 👎👎👎 Shame on you, Caran d'Ache. It is such a lovely colour! 💙💙💙

I spent a fortune on Faber castel. Gave them away. Prismacolor is the best so far. I love neocolor 2 crayons. Love Caran dache..Why NO WATERCOLORS? I BOUGHT what they list as watercolor.
