Which Colored Pencils are BEST? Caran D'ache Luminance VS Derwent Lightfast!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Which colored pencils are best? Today, I am comparing the Caran D'ache Luminance colored pencils and the Derwent Lightfast colored pencils to see which brand I think is the best!
UPDATE Thank you to all the people that let me know there are 24 additional pencils to the set of 76 Caran D’ache Luminance pencils. This means the largest amount of Caran D’ache Luminance pencils available now is 100 pencils. The 24 new pencils are: Pink white LF1, Indian yellow LFI, Quinacrindone purple LF2, Herculanum red LF1, Terracotta LF1, Carmine lake LF2, Nimes blue LF2, Middle green LF1, Light flesh 10% LF1, Dark cadmium orange LF2, Hibiscus pink LF2, Dark flesh 5% LF1, Natural russet LF2, Dark indigo LF1, Ultramarine LF1, Chromium oxyde green LF1, Medium cadmium yellow LF1, Anthraquinone Carmine LF2, Violet pink LF1, Dark flesh 40% LF1, Dark flesh LF1, Indanthrone blue LF1, Chrysocolla blue LF1, Dark phtalocyanine green LF1.
So in total, the total number of pencils graded at a LFI or LF2 is:
Luminance: LFI - 79 pencils, LF2 - 21 pencils. (Set of 100)
Derwent: LFI - 62 pencils, LF2 - 38 pencils. (Set of 100)
LFI - pencil pigments last 100 or more years.
LFII - pencil pigments last 50 or more years.

They are both wonderful pencils and each have their own features that shine. As a budding commission artist (both portrait and pet/wildlife) I find them both awesome. I agree, polychromos are still the detail king (but between these two, derwent LF is better)

My two favourite pencil sets. I have the 100 set of both and together they make the perfect set of pencils. I love them both so much but the Lightfast tip it for me, they are so buttery and creamy; I don't find them scratchy at all. You can't go wrong with either of these sets.

This is a great comparison! I wish you had used similar colors of both brands though. Like for the xacto test, I think scartching in a brown vs warm red are actually not quite a head to head comparison as to how well the scratching would show.

Thank you so much Tracy. I only have a very small set of the Derwent Lightfast pencils (set of 12) compared to my luminance where I have the set of 76, so was limited on colours. But I will definitely take this into consideration as it's a great suggestion! I can say though that the scratching method is very similar with both brands 😊

Good review. The only thing additional I have would like to see is a palette comparison. I bought the set of 24 Lightfast a while back and was REALLY disappointed because it was not a good selection of pencils, mostly earth tones and just a couple of real hue colors. But it is how I fell in love with Luminance because I decided to go to Blick and fill in the gaps buying open stock. I now have all the Luminance pencils and am saving for a box set of Lightfast. To sum up, Luminance is more wax-based and Lightfast is more oil-based and that is truly the only difference I found and they work well together like Prima and Poly Chromos. From what I can tell based on reviews the Lightfast has more vibrant colors as well.. I really like both

I bought the full set of derwent lightfast and was quite disappointed at the many muted colors. I like vibrant colors so I’m also filling in the many gaps on blick. The upside is I never would buy muted colors and there are times I need them so I guess all is well 😅

Thanks for the review it was v helpful! Some other reviews I watched didn’t show the swatches up close so I cudnt see what they were like. I think when I was watching u colour I felt like the luminance were a touch more smooth and even, as if they wud be ever so slightly more comfortable to colour with. Not sure if that’s true for you, but that’s how I felt when watching lol. And I saw another review where she felt that the lightfast were a bit uneven and harder to blend. It seems the lightfast r a little more vibrant according to what I’ve seen across a few reviews. Thanks :) x

Both pencil sets are known for their superior lightfast rating. Lightfastness is a pencil's ability to resist against fading and discoloring in natural light over the years, so the higher the lightfast rating the more durable the pencils will be. Both pencil sets have the highest lightfast rating for colored pencils to date so I am putting them both up against each other in today's video! I'll be testing their build quality, color range, blending abilities, cost, techniques, and taking a closer look at each individual pencil's lightfast rating. Let me know below which pencil set is your favourite! 🎨

Two years later, last night Amazon had an offer on the lightfast pencils. €40+ less than the regular price. Mine comes today, they also had a good discount on the luminance but that is where I draw the line. For no reason because I have never used either but the lightfast was only €2 + in the offer. I love the Derwent brand and I have the pablos etc. I’m good.

  • @AlexisCassandraArt

Very thorough and well-made comparison! I’m so happy you made this one as derwent lightfast are a fairly new line and a few years ago there wasn’t really any competition for the luminance (lightfastness-wise). I’ve actually only tried a few derwent lightfasts open stock but I love the lay down maybe a teeny bit more than the luminance laydown! They’re so pricey but maybe one day I’ll invest in a set. Did you see that luminance released a new portrait set last year and now there are 100 pencils total but I’m not sure if you can buy them altogether yet or just separate? For my birthday I bought the extra 24 portrait colors:) it’s a nice addition because 76 colors was definitely on the lower end of what pencil sets offer. Thanks again for the in-depth comparison💜 and by the way I love your new profile picture!😊

Hello Jess! sorry for my late reply. Honestly, you should find that both sets offer a wide range of colours in their larger sets. I find their colours are very rich and opaque and also I prefer how they feel on paper. I hope this helps!

Lightfast ratings are based on very tightly controlled museum conditions, not natural light, which could mean anything from a normal north facing window with no direct sun to a huge south facing, drenched in sun all day window, the latter of which would be far more detrimental to any displayed work. If you're planning on displaying work, you should do your own tests to see how the pigments hold up as everyone has a different idea of what things mean.

  • @AmyLouiseArt

    @AmyLouiseArt

    2 жыл бұрын

Thank you, I have read through many lightfast rating charts and some state museum conditions whilst others state resistance to fading is measured by exposure to natural light. I prefer to state natural light as that is what I’ve read the most in lightfast rating charts, websites, articles, and other peoples videos. I only briefly cover lightfastness as I think it is important for people to do their own research and tests to see where they think it is best to store their own artwork. I don’t intentionally spread misinformation - there’s lots of conflicting information online.

@@AmyLouiseArt oh I don't think you're doing anything misleading or on purpose, nothing like that! The ASTM tests in direct sunlight and under UV light in a lab but guarantees lightfastness up to or over 100 years in museum conditions so that may be where the confusion comes from? Their ratings are the LF1 and LF2 form. Blue Wool is the other industry standard, with ratings from 1 to 8 and 8 being the highest, but they only test in a lab with artificial light. So whilst a pencil with a high lightfast rating may fare better in direct sunlight than one with a lower rating, it isn't guaranteed to remain unchanged in direct sunlight for any duration and the guarantee only applies to museum conditions. It gets even more confusing when you move away from pencils and into paints as then the ratings are based on the specific pigments used rather than the way those pigments are delivered so you can't even trust a lot of the ratings haha.
