Studio chat: a fuzzy start, a tree, birds and...Museum Aquarelle pencils

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It was high time for a Studio Chat and even though it wobbled off with a fuzzy start, the talk got going after a few hiccups. It’s about a tree I’m painting in watercolor at the moment (a really detailed job), the birds in our garden and my disappointment in the Caran d’Ache Museum Aquarelle watercolor pencils. I’ve worked with them a bit after the very first impression and I haven’t warmed up to them yet.

I love listening to your musings about art, life and nature Mandy. Since welcoming a little one last november I find myself living/creating through all my beloved art youtubers since my creative time has become nonexistent. And my little one likes the lively colours and the calming voices of those creators. As always I love your honest views of all things, including art supplies. Not all art supplies fit all artists ❤️

Awww, thank you, Sigrún. I know how busy life is and how dense time can be when you have a little one. I'm glad videos like mine offer you a little fine thread with the creative life. It will come back before you know it. Mine are just about grown up now...time went by SO fast.... Enjoy your little one! And for a piece of unwanted advice: let your little one get super dirty in experimenting with good art supplies, mud, food and everything...it's only clothes versus a solid foundation of creative freedom and confidence. Mother Goose has spoken and will now be quiet. Promise.

It's true. We see amazing art created with amazing art supplies. If we don't know how to achive such amazing results, we may try to achieve them by buying another tube or another set of paints. But it comes with time and practie...and the results may be achieved with many good quality paints...and paper etc. Swatching another tube of paint brings joy for a moment whereas growing in your art is different quality of life...makes you feel good as a person.

Exactly! It is not about fully about the supplies. Only the really bad stuff is unworkable. But anything from student grade and upwards is enough. Art comes from an artist, a trained hand and mind, not a tube.

This comment is a bit late, but first, thanks for the video, you were a companion to some squirrel sketching :). Secondly, I think the "combining plants" word you looking for is called grafting in English. And third, I totally agree with you about haul videos and art supply videos (though I appreciate it them from time to time, recently I used some of your swatching videos help on me deciding what paint to (not) buy). I know I feel whenever I have art supplies that go unused in the studio I feel a sense of guilt almost, and I only have 1 watercolor palette, 1 gouache palette, 1 acrylic palette, etc I can't imagine how people with like 30 different palettes of 30 different mediums operate. There's an art youtuber that I like but whose video I kinda had to give up on, because all of their videos are either hauls or the swatching of hauls, but whenever they try to branch out, those videos don't get views, so they don't make them. Plus this person no longer seems to produce as many "final" artworks prepared for sale as before they began youtubing. I know that I feel a sense of accomplishment when I use an art supply or fill a sketchbook. I just finished my first full (half ounce/15ml) tube of artist grade watercolor, granted that it was a weak yellow and took me three years, but it still filled me with a sense pride. "This is a tool that I've used to its full extant, not a toy or a collection." I know different strokes for different folks but I can't help feeling that some of these people would be happier and more fulfilled by making youtube videos less frequently and art more frequently (exceptions, of course, for people who depend on youtube for their income). And it would, as you said, probably encourage more people to use what they have and channel their creative energies toward creating instead of consuming. Anyways, thanks for the videos and giving me a little space/prompting think out my thoughts on this issue.

I don't know if you can return them to the store, but on this side of the ocean, I was able to return the ones that were scratchy even if I did do a colour charts with them because I hadn't sharpened them. Clients can try the pencils at the store; some pencils are really blunt, and it doesn't bother the customer nor the store owner - at least where I shop. Perhaps you could ask your store for a reimbursement or a store credit? Just a thought. 😉❤

You are such a wholesome person and definitely my favorite artist on youtube. Thankyou for inspiration and good vibes. That wc palette you showed later is really good, I'm using it too and it's very convenient. Oh, speaking of which, one of my yellows (I'm pretty sure it's aureoline or cadmium) somehow evaporates inside the tightly-sealed case and tints everything around a little bit. How funny is that! Anyway, looking forward to your future videos, and it's always an extra pleasure when they are as long as this one =)

Whaaaat?!!! WAtercolor that evaporates? Yikes! Did you add anything to the paint before putting it in the case? Maybe you can look up the pigment number and go to artiscreation.com to look it up and see if that is "normal". I don't think it is, by the way. But what I learned from Roman Szmal is that sometimes one pigment interacts with another to make it behave differently. Maybe you have a pigment in the same case that reacts with the yellow?

@@MandyvanGoeije The thing is, I am not sure which of my three yellows behave like this. As for pigments, they are all seem pretty normal: lemon yellow (p.y.3), cadmium yellow medium (p.y.35) and aureoline (p.y.151). May be some binder is funny or something like that haha.

Hey Jess, thank you so much for your concern and kind words. Yes I've been away for a bit longer than I intended...again...the road is still a bit bumpy here which makes it hard to keep on track. I can't make any promises, but I do have a vision of being fully back painting and connecting here through my channel. Fingers crossed I can make that happen soon! I hope to be able to give an update next week or the week after.

This is a long reply, so make yourself a nice cup of coffee or tea, snuggle up in your favourite chair and prepare for a long read. 🙂 22:09 I don’t think everyone feels like they have to buy all the paints they see on KZread. I am not an artist by profession, so I cannot justify buying all the paints I see on KZread, and, frankly, I don’t find myself wanting to do that. I actually keep asking myself how people manage to find room for all those art supplies. No, seriously, what do you guys actually do? Do you like buy a warehouse or something? 😂 There are many art supplies that I want to try, I won’t deny that. It is part of my own art exploration journey and my own excitement for art, so I won’t extinguish that; but these supplies are influenced little by what KZreadrs own or use. I am influenced more by what I need and what excites me than by what others have. Take for example Cerulean PB36: many artists absolutely love it and don’t like PB35. I took one glance at each and instinctively new that I would love PB35. The opportunity came for me to buy both; at first I only got PB35 and I fell in love, it’s just so beautiful! I mean … 💕 🤩. I later bought PB36 out of curiosity and tried it; honestly, I still don’t understand why artists find it useful. Maybe I need to use it more in mixes? I don’t regret buying it since it’s part of my exploration, but I won’t be buying it again from any brand. And this is where KZread and the internet are useful: I can see how paints behave and see what hue they have, and I can listen to how people describe them; this helps me immensely in deciding what to buy and what to ignore. Not because people are buying them or because people are using them, but because I see the art supplies in action and I hear KZreadrs explaining and discussing their pros and cons. I love the internet for giving me that opportunity. And the same goes for brushes, although it’s a bit more tricky for me as I’m still getting to understand what I like and don’t like. Plus you can’t get a real feel for the brush until you hold it in your hand and try it. I used to think that when I buy more art supplies I’d become more excited and want to try even more art supplies. Truth is, I’m not. Sure the excitement is still present, but that urge to want to buy more really diminished. I still want to try new brands, as there is still a lot I need to explore, but my selection and choice of paints and brushes has become more limited and more curated.

Hehe...I love long replies...super entertaining! You're right. Not EVERYone feels greedy for art supplies after watching review vids or when they're behind their drawing tables waiting for inspiration. I have two artist friends who don't suffer from it either. They just super enjoy the work and work with whatever they've got and will only buy something when they run out. But 'EVERY' is a word easily said in speech, eh? Just like always and never. But a lot of my viewers do recognize the greedy feeling, though. Like insta scrolling it's one of those things many people do to get started....(and sometimes get stuck in because they never get to working that day anymore...me guilty!). And also...there's a breeze of art-supply greed here on KZread. "We" people....eck...I'm not one of those people that has a studio that looks like a store. In fact, I feel burdened by boundless stock, so I put a stop to it when I noticed it and declined offers for free stuff to review. I'm not a reviewer at heart. I'm an artist and I share what I know and experience and very much appreciate space that allows my creativity to flourish, which it doesn't when I overstock. But...I admit, it's something that developed as my confidence as an artist grew and I felt I no longer needed all those art supplies and just love the ones I use. The Museum Aquarelle were an attempt to expand on my watercolor pencil collection, hoping to find a new and usable characteristic, but alas. Lesson learned. I have all I need. :-)
