Derwent having consistent colors across sets is a god send. I LOVE that they do that. I think that pairs great for sets like these, since you can invest small, then replace them with their lightfast counterparts if you want to upgrade/get "refills". :)

Thats exactly what I wanted to say! I always recommend this for beginners/ habbyists with tight budget because buying one or two Lightwas/luminance isn't as hard as buying a set and you know that you'll use the color :D

Just downloaded a pdf from Derwent. Most of these colours are actually lightfast. Surprise, surprise. Had to order a tin of them after watching your brilliant demo.

From what I’ve heard from someone at Derwent they are designed to be similar to prismacolor as in soft and highly pigmented but without any of the issues that plague them.

Yeah. I'm gonna stop recommending Prismacolor to people, and tell em about these. Chromaflow wipes the floor with Prisma. Prisma's just been coasting on the name for too long.

When these are available in the U.K. I plan on getting a set for adult colouring books and also to use in my sketchbook to plan out bigger colour pencil pieces before I do the final piece!

These look like interesting pencils. I might have to check them out when they come to Canada. I see a lot of companies putting out budget friendly pencils, but I wish they also put out more lightfast ones :)

I love Derwent pencils. Unfortunately Chromaflow are very expensive where I live. In fact I paid less than double for the Derwent Lightfast 100 in the wood box over the 72 Chromaflow in the tin. So….. that was a no brainer decision. Loving my lightfast.

The drawing is amazing I have really missed your videos. I have just almost fallen asleep to your voice. It is so soothing. Its 22:31 here right now.

I'll buy these when they are available in Europe. I like Derwent products and this sees like a great little set. I also think they are real pretty in matte black and gold, it's kinda silly but I love pretty pencils.

I have these - I love them! I do like them more than the colorsoft though I couldn't pinpoint why I just know I do. Thank you for the review!

There are now 72 pencils now and they have published the lightfastness for each pencil. They now are available open stock. I think Derwent listened.

Hey Lisa, I just got a set of these last week. Did your set have some scrapes or weird letters imprinted near the point? I've been experiencing breakage with several colors too. I like the effortless lay down. Good for folks with hand weakness.

Oh that's weird! I would ask Derwent about that for sure. I had the orange break once but that was it. I wasn't even adding heavy pressure to that one at that point, it seemed to be a one off issue. Throughout this I really added a lot of pressure and from different angles with a sharp point so I was surprised they didn't break more.

I received mine from Amazon after seeing Lindsey show them. The smell is so chemically. Her Huntress didn’t smell anything. Did you have an odor with yours? They are super creamy.

I had the same issue. Got them from Amazon out of the official Derwent store but suspected they might be counterfeit due to the issues. I actually immediately thought of this channel because I could not get the purples to sharpen at all. The cores were broken in multiple places. About 1/2 of them sharpened correctly but nothing I tried worked on the others. The smell was very strong are well, and I did have some scuffs in the barrel and paint bubbles at the color indicator portion of the end. I reached out to Derwent and they are sending me a new set. I sent several photos and they are working with their technical team to troubleshoot if it’s a QA issue.

I did buy these. I am not an artist but enjoy quality colored pencils for fun and relaxation. I have a great collection of second hand Prismacolor and Derwent (thanks to Fb Marketplace) pencils. I went ahead and purchased these new since they are not available for resale due to being new. I like them very much.

I am going to get a set if these. I have a serious colored pencil addiction, but I LOVE trying different brands of pencils to get different effects. I also am not fond of Prismacolors. I just feel like I am wasting my money every time I buy them. I loved watching this and can't wait to see more of your work.

I was window shopping the US Amazon website a couple of days ago (I'm in Canada) and saw a big feature for these on the Derwent shop page. I was hoping they would be a lightfast range but I knew the price was too low for that. I'm amazed at your results! Definitely not something I need for myself on my limited budget, but I'll keep this line in mind for when my daughter's old enough to graduate from Crayola.

I already have several sets of colored pencils including the full range of prismacolor (in Canada haven't had much trouble with breakage other than normal) Faber Castell polychromos, the Derwent procolor and Lyra polycolor so wouldn't buy any for myself, however my 12yr old granddaughter is just getting into art and this looks like a perfect set to start her out with!! I also get asked frequently what are good for beginners and these will definitely top that list!

I plan on buying these. I have Prismacolor and Arteza. I think these will play nice with what I already have.

I had purchased a set of the Chromaflow pencils and sent them right back. Right off the bat I had a lot of breakage. Plus, I had to sharpen them so often that they wore down very quickly. I only had them for a few days before sending them back.

Great video! I have purchased these pencils and the pigment payout is great. I hate that they are not lightfast. They are so nice to work with, wish they were. But thank you again!

When I began drawing with color pencil last year, I bought Prismacolor, then three or four other expensive high-quality sets. As a rookie, that makes little sense. As the most frustrating set, Prismas are the set I’m using up -and not replacing for all the reasons you’ve mentioned. I ordered a full set of these yesterday for sketchbook work. Thanks for the recommendation. ❤

Thanks for your review. I bought small sets of Coloursoft and Procolour. I was hoping to find something that colors like Prismacolor that doesn’t break. Looks like this is the answer for just playing around.

Because I had seen other reviews and they said that they did not see the logic of the company making these pencils, if they had the Derwent Soft colors. That's what the persons said....

Hi Lisa!! Regarding the Lightfastness According to ACCO, they are 88% lightfast. They have answered a customer question in Amazon India which says so.

Thanks for the review. I needed to edit my comment because I realized you answered my first question. So the colors are the same as the lightfast ones, what about the texture and saturation do you think? I'm particularly interested in Magenta and Turquoise Green!

Now I’m interested in getting these. I’m a fairly new adult colorist and am curious about how easy you make them sound to use.

I personally use mostly derwent lightfast and polychromos, but I feel like these would be good to buy for my son since they definitely blend better than the children's pencils he has now.

I'd also say these are looking pretty tempting for someone selling digital prints instead of the originals. If it's digital the color gets to be preserved for ages without worrying about the lightfastness, and I have to say I'm really interested in these. I'm still learning, and I'd love to give a better quality if I ever do badges but for now mostly what I do is digital stuff. Thank you for letting me know these exist! I rarely comment but your videos keep me inspired and keep me wanting to work hard on art.

Your pictures have an element of astro photography about them.

I get the issue with prismas - fortunately, my new 150 set has not had a single lead break and that’s been with multiple sharpening - I was afraid to invest in Derwent’s Lightfast because I have severe arthritis in both hands and felt my best option was to go to prismacolors even with their reputation of breaking - how does the softness of the Lightfast pencils compare to the prismacolors? I may pick up the chromaflow pencils even though I don’t need them lol - but would really like the lightfast option if they are soft enough :) loved your video!

I'm primarily a colorist.. and I ADORE these pencils. I dont understand why they don't get more attention.. but I'm thrilled to find they are finally available open stock even though I have to import them still. These are what you get if Prismacolor premiere and verithin had a baby..with the Derwent color palette. I wish so badly they would extend them to 120, but the 72 does have a complete and balanced color palette. They are absolutely perfect for working over a marker base, they are super soft, pigmented, opaque, blend beautifully, and are small enough to fit into little spaces for shading and detailing. The white is outstanding. I'd rather have these than any of the other Derwent's, or Carandache... and they are a fraction of the price.

Lisa, thanks for the review. A pass from me, simply because of lightfastness and unavailability of open stock. Apart from that, they seem quite impressive. Btw, how old is your cockatiel? I adopted one last year and he is the cutest little guy 🥰

It can if you push hard with it, but with a light hand it causes no damage :)

what was the brand of the brush you used to blend with? I didn't catch what you said in the video. I struggle with blending but it could just be as you said not having enough pencil down before I attempt to.

Lisa, would you consider doing a review of,Holbein colored pencils? I have all of the recognized professional grade of colored pencils, but I have noticed that Holbein does not,seem to be used as often by artists with you tube channels who teach and are making a living from their art. I would truly appreciate hearing your honest opinion on them.

Hey Lisa! Totally love your works!!! I am from India and totally agree with what you said about availability of art supplies. I have tried chromaflow & I absolutely love it! However it is available at a similar price range to other derwent pencils (coloursoft/ artists/drawing) I remember seeing your coloursoft review a while ago. I use coloursoft and did not have any problems like you described in that video. Maybe there was an issue with that particular set? Did you try using coloursoft after your first experience?

My issue with coloursoft wasn't due to quality control issues (like prismacolor) but that the formula just doesn't work well with my techniques. Yes, I've used it since then. I got another small set with smart art box, my experience was the same :)

i really wish that there were more colour count in these... and also, all the other derwent pencils are of 4 mm lead but these are of 3.5 mm... this is why im confused whether i should buy the chromaflow or the coloursoft of derwent... can you please give me your suggestion of which will be better? btw, i really love your review videos! thanks a lot!

Hi Lisa, thank you for sharing your info so generously! My question is....you say these are really inexpensive coloured pencils. I looked them up and the price I found was about $2 per pencil, so a 24 pack was around $47. I am a newbie when it comes to buying coloured pencils. Does this price sound right to you? Thanks😁

Since I am not selling my art I will stick to less expensive Prismacolors. I just love them, mine broke ones or twice in the two year period. Works out for me. Do you use oil medium for pencils? After trying pretty much every art medium I find colored pencils are my favorite to use.

And a year later, they've announced a 72 set. I just saw it on their website just now when looking for something else. According to the lightfast swatches on the product page some of them are even 7 and 8 on the BW scale (which I hadn't checked when I bought the 24, but is there in their charts) - and there's some newer colours too. The full 72 is just over 100 pounds though, which isn't exactly the most budget friendly pricing. I'll buy them, because that's what I do, but I wonder how far they'll go with most of them being 5 and under, and still being that pricey. I came to KZread hoping to find some info on them maybe. I do have the original set of 24, which I'll give away when getting the 72.

It's only £69 now a year later

They feel like a hybrid of Prisma and the old Ticonderoga colored pencils, but better overall. I haven't even done anything really except scribble on a piece of paper with them, but they seem like a holy grail of a colored pencil. I want a big lightfast range of these with a more opaque white. They almost seem to have the 'push and pull' that I loved about Ticonderogas, but I'm not entirely sure yet (I actually wish some company would buy the formulation of them and make a lightfast set with it). It's nice to finally have a worthy cheaper colored pencil option to suggest to beginners.

I bought the Chromaflow pencils to see how they compare to the Coloursoft pencils and, to me, the Coloursoft pencils are all-around superior in terms of pigment and blendability.

Is there a Lightfast or UV type spray varnish you can put over that where it will preserve it? Thank you for sharing! That is such a beautiful work.

I am in uk where these pencil are made, and we can’t get this pencil here so very frustrating

I ran out before I finished your video to go get a set. But they didn't have. I wanted a prisma colour alternative

I got my set right after Lindsay showed them so far the Strawberry was broken after I sharpened it quite a bit of pencil was gone. My Coloursoft had five break I dont know what is going on with the quality control.

What brand is that slice tool?

It will help to an extent but wouldn't be nearly as good as using actual lightfast colors. You can also frame it behind UV glass to help :)
