Making Precious Watercolor Sketchbooks - Vlog

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I intended to film a demo for Patreon, but began talking about why and how I bind my precious watercolor sketchbooks myself and why it might be a good idea for you to try it as well. The intended demo was indeed filmed and is now live on my Patreon, to which you can find the link below.

Only the way how you talk about these books is the art in itself. What a talent and hard work! Admiring you!

:-) You will get that. Definitely! Not any time really super soon because I'm still embroidering the cover for my next sketchbook (what on earth did I get myself into?!!!). But as soon as that's finished, I'll film the making of the book process.

Haha, half way through and just have to comment on how much I am enjoying your blog…😋 You bind so beautifully! I wanted to share a tip on binding thread. I sometimes use waxed floss threads for non precious notebooks and sketchbooks and lately I have been dying (white) embroidery thread with watered down acrylics…boy oh boy…does that work like a charm….and you can make your thread any color you like. Now that I think of it, maybe Matt medium will work also if you like the color. Ha, getting ideas! Yes! Thank you Mandy! And now I am going to watch the rest of your uplifting video!

Hehe...as it happens I've just dyed my own embroidery thread with acrylics too! Not for binding purposes, though, for a freestyle embroidery project I'm working on for a book cover. Is the embroidery thread strong enough for book binding? And what kind of thread are you using? DMC, Anchor? No, no, I'm not curious at all!!! :-)

@@MandyvanGoeije Haha... ok..:) Have no idea what kind of thread I am using once bought a huge box of embroidery thread in all colors of the rainbow from Action. That is what I normally use. So no brand what so ever. I normally use beeswax to make them ready to book bond with. But I forgot to take it with me one time when I was visiting my lovely boyfriend, wanted to book bind and got creative...:) To my surprise it worked so well!!! I let it dry on waxpaper. Oh and I sometimes use an art newspaper to strenghten my backing. That gives a really nice effect though you loose your stitched back of course. I don’t often bookbind. But boy oh boy...I really love to do it..:) Really Love how you get creative with your books. Very inspiring.

Thanks for this so much. I've started making rudimentary small Canson Montvale sketchbooks from my 9x12 Montvale paper. I'd been wondering how to bind them. I like just playing in them, even for a few moments. 🙏🏼

Have you managed to bind them? My reply is seriously late, so I think you have by now. But if you are still looking for a way to bind them....you can start with pamphel stitch if you bind only a few sheets, or you could try coptic stitch. It looks difficult, but it isn't really. There's tons of vids online that will definitely help you out!

Hello Gieneke, it will not really be a course. It's more like painting together. There will be one video a month in which I talk about the pigment we'll work with that month while I show how I work with it. And then there will be a live moment to paint together. It will be a year-long project in which we paint faces for a whole year - and every month one pigment will feature to get to know the pigments better. It will be great for beginners because the techniques I work with are highly intuitive. That means that advanced watercolorists can also still find a challenge in them. And because it's live I can assist during the painting moments too.
