    I identified with this video so much, I almost cried. After my mum passed away a few years ago, I started to buy more and more watercolour paint, almost to fill some kind of void. I found I was spending most of my time sorting out colours, and doing swatches, but when it came to actual painting, I was hovering my paintbrush over huge boxes of as many colours as I could fit in, and it was extremely stressful. I didn’t know what colour was what despite having swatches of everything in front of me. I started to feel angry that my hobby wasn’t relaxing anymore, so I’ve spent the last two weeks whittling down all the colours that I would need in my palette, trying to simplify it to make painting fun again. I’ve got full sets of Winsor and Newton, Daler Rowney, Mijello mission gold, Roman Szmal, White Nights, Van Gogh, Jackson’s, Schminke, and so on. I specifically wanted, transparent, single pigment, and light fast, as much as possible, and it’s driven me mad going through hundreds upon hundreds of paints. But I’ve done it! And do you know what? I’ve now got a small box of 23 colours! And even a few of those are just for convenience. I feel so guilty that I have so much paint that’s unnecessary, not to mention the money I could have used on something else. Sorry I’ve gone on, but I had to get this off my chest, none of my family are artistic, it was just me and my mum, so I know by sharing my experience on here, someone will understand.

    Oh yes, I totally understand and I'm glad you got it off your chest. A box of 23 colors sounds pretty ideal to me! And it's okay you have the rest. Unlike other art supplies, watercolor never goes off. Basically, you've got stock for the rest of your life :-) I hope that now you've brought your set down to something you can handle, the joy of painting will come back. It certainly does for me. Having a go-to set of paints without hassle makes all the difference. I do way more quickies and way more coloring of swift sketches, etc. Simply because it's there at hand. Sorry to hear your mum's passed away. From what I think I read between the lines, I think the watercolor is exactly what you need to deal with her loss. Pain doesn't dissolve, but adding colors to tears, certainly brings a positive dimension to them. Big hugs!

    @@MandyvanGoeije …Thank you so much for your kind words. I have to admit I’ve definitely got enough paint for two lifetimes 😂 but at the moment, it’s wonderful to know exactly what colour I’m putting my brush into without having to check a chart. My mum was also an artist, she had a simple box of 14 colours but that was enough for her to create wonderful paintings. You’re right, my art is helping me to go alongside the pain of her loss. Painting is wonderful in that regard isn’t it? It’s all-consuming. Thank you again. I’ve followed your channel for a long time, and I’ll continue to do so. 🤗🇬🇧

    @moonspinners I can so much relate to your comment and I am glad you got it off your chest! It’s been eating away at me so much and yes it’s a way for me of filling some void. I end up focusing on collecting and cataloging and swatching my collections. It’s gotten so bad

    @@elliez7269 …I know, it’s like an obsession isn’t it? No time for any actual art. I’m a lot better now, though still sorting for the ultimate best colours for my smaller set, it’s nearly perfected, I’ve swapped a few colours around, but I’ve had more time to create instead of just being a watercolour collector. I hope you manage to achieve the same, and fill your void with art 🤗🇬🇧

    I enjoy your videos so much! Your passion for colors and pigments, your honesty, and insight are refreshing!! I agree with you on the Sennelier paints! I, too, was very disappointed! I purchased the 48 set half pans after seeing reviews and was so excited to get them. More than half of the pans were less than half full loose in the pans, and the pigments dry down to a dull pale version of the paints after drying. I wish I had seen your review of these paints before purchasing them. I could have saved ALOT of money! I do, however , love the Roman Szmal paints, and I am building my collection slowly. Thank you so much for sharing!! 💞

    Wow…thanks for this. As a developing fine artist, (at 65 years old 🤭) I’m still learning, and learning that it can take years to find one’s “ideal palette 🎨. I’ve only been serious about wcs for the last few years. At lesser levels, I’m also into oils, oil pastels, color pencils (regular & water soluble,) inks, along with paper crafting and smatterings of this or that. But really, I’m finding wcs (including gouache) so enchanting and wonderful, so all encompassing, that I’m thinking I may need to just forget about oils and focus on wcs bc that’s really what I’m most interested in. It seems that as it is with wc, to really be accomplished with oils (or anything really) and not just a hobbyist, lots of time, daily or almost daily creation, practice, planning with it…ongoing instruction and just a lot of time invested in experimenting with colors and brands, putting myself “out there” with promotion and a learning about whatever my “thing” is in order to grow as an artist…for the joy (your soul) as well as for professional growth. Thanks!

    Wow! Mixing all these colors to determine my ideal palette would leave me with a numb brain. I simply couldn't do it. I more or less do mixing as I need and as I go keeping basic color theory in mind and as the composition "speaks" to me. But thanks for all your hard work and sharing it with your viewers. 🙏🏼👌😃

    It was a really big job. And guess what? We're half a year later and I'm finding out that even though in mixing practise and theory this may be the ideal palette, but there are quite a few colors I never used since, so I'm already planning on taking colors out. I'm now thinking of narrowing it down to a 24-full-pan set. But that's going to take a lot more mixing, so it'll be a while until I'm there :-) Of course, when I get there, I'll share :-)

    I just love the deep dives into your palettes and watching how the palette evolves. It’s so enjoyable learning your thought processes behind your color selections. I don’t know how you’ll find them, but there are a few options you might enjoy for a cool deeper red to replace the fugitive alizarin: D.S. PR264 (Lukas makes one too, but I find it less “punchy” …maybe less pigment load?…than the D.S.) . DaVinci has 2 PV19 quinacridone options: quin carmine and quin alizarin - these are LF2 by DaVinci’s ratings, though, so I don’t know if that would make your cutoff. I haven’t yet done my own lightfast tests to see. However, I *have* done my own mixing tests like the ones you did to choose colors, and I have to say I could see very little difference in the mixes generated from any of these 3 options.

  • @MandyvanGoeije

    @MandyvanGoeije

    Thank you so much for your alizarin crimson suggestions. Yes, the Lukas I know, but unfortunately the Lukas paints I have all dull down tremendously, so I didn't include them in my set, but I will check out the PR264 again and see how it is. Da Vinci is not available here, unfortunately. And maybe an LF2 rating would indeed be a no-no for now. For now...because with this color, in the end, there has to be SOME choice...and if all we can have is LF2, then so be it... Or use my own mix...I concocted one too last summer, from LF1 rated colors alone. I might have to toss that one in...(will do a video about it if I do)

    @@MandyvanGoeije Take all the time you need 😃. It’s nice that you are doing the 100 day watercolour challenge. It is not my thing, to be honest; but maybe I should set myself a similar challenge: one painting per week 😂. Just kidding, of course. But I think a challenge of one or two paintings per week would suite someone who is busy or is intimidated by watercolours; they can use the rest of the week to casually think of ideas and prepare for the painting.

    Thank you for sharing this with us! The Daniel Smith PV23 is also lightfast! ☺️ And now I'm very curious about the PR175! Did not know that was lightfast! For an Alizarin-like red I mix Schminke Permanent Carmine (a deeper, red PV19) and White Nights Venice Purple (a bright PR179). ☺️ Edit: My Daniel Smith Permanent Alizarin Crimson dulled down so much in my lightfastness test that it, for me, lost its point 😔 And PO48 is one of the pigments that will disappear from the market, if I have understood things correctly. Daniel Smith have made claims that theirs will be available for another 15 years or so, but if you love the Rembrandt one then it might be worth looking into picking up a few extra tubes. ☺️

    Thanks so much for the PO48 tip. I most certainly will get myself a few tubes of that!!!! I'm gutted to hear about the dulled down Permanent Alizarin Crimson. How is it possible that with me it stayed so bright and with you it dulled down? Maybe it's also down to humidity and climate conditions? Odd, isn't it? But I'm glad to hear because that makes me think again. I hope more people react to that color and share their experience. I will look out for the Venice Purple. I hope I can get it here because I'd love to try. PR175 is officially not rated for lightfastness in watercolor, but since it is perfectly lightfast as a pigment and in other paint substances, I dared take the risk and never thought about it again. I could do a test...
