The Ultimate Watercolor set - 2 days composing...what pigment is missing? (recorded on-the-fly)

What pigment is missing from my ultimate set? Let me know :-)
I hope you don't mind the shaking of my camera...this was recorded totally on the fly. I will record a full and steady video about my palette when it's ready, but I wanted to run this by you quickly to see if I've missed any pigments in my quest for THE Ultimate Watercolor set :-)
Brands used are Sennelier, Daniel Smith, Rembrandt and Schmincke Horadam, so it's been a dreadful amount of work to compare all the paints, but it was equally lovely ♥

    I would remove both golds and keep any metallics together in a separate box, as obviously this is not a travel palette! I do like gold in my palettes but as you might like to add colours this is one way to claw back a little space. I have a heavily granulating Kremer black I love on its own it separates into a creamy undertone with this very granular black, I think DS does a similar but without the undertone. It mixes very lively with a tiny bit of the dark perylenes and darker blues to make a very unusual blackish deep colour. I also like to have Naples yellows in my palettes they can be quite variable but very useful. I still haven’t seen a greenish one, which I used a lot in oil painting, but I guess a little chromium oxide would fix that. Which seems to remind you it is a colour you do not like! Dilute and in mixes though it is gorgeous. Ah well, watercolour! What we love is so personal! I have no doubt you will swap some of these out, perhaps you also need a small reserve palette for tailoring it to whatever your needs are at any given time!

    Well, call me crazy, but I easily take this palette on a trip :-) I am chucking one of the golds out. The bottom one. I don't like it as much as I thought I would and it holds up too much space indeed. I have that Kremer black too. But I prefer the Daniel Smith Hematite over it...it has that creamy undertone too, but the black spots are less intense so the overall look is softer. It's one color I'm considering instead of the gold. The Naples yellow I looked at, but in all the paint boxes I own, it's hardly touched, if at all. What do you use it for? Skin tones? I might have to try if I can use it for anything. No, the chromium oxide is not my pal. I can see how it can be appealing, but I find it a really difficult color. Diluted...hmm...I might give that a try. Because theoretically in my greens it would fit into the gap there is now. (The things we come up with while composing a palette!!!) The PG18 seems a bit too close to PG7 to insert it, even though it is more organic. And the deep Cobalt green I have by Qor is incredibly dark...a bit too dark possibly. I'll dilute them both and see if one comes out a winner in mixes :-) Thanks for inspiring me. I'm off to my mixing table! :-)

    @@MandyvanGoeije chromium oxide used at a normal dilution is just awful, it has a heavily matte appearance and not too nice at all, but in very thin washes or mixed with whatever yellow transparent of your choice or even a transparent white like Kremer does it is just lovely and very natural looking. I like Naples yellow reddish and tinted slightly with green for skin tones but also some plants and animals. Underbelly kind of tones! Even with a touch ( only the slightest) of something like a manganese violet for yellow into brown into soft violet tones. The difficult pigments are worth the struggle if they give you something that fits your style and you cannot get it from the more transparent, therefore easier, pigments. I have a sort of love hate thing going on with the dark opaque reds too, Venetian, English, whatever they get called. They too are very useful diluted and mixed, and not just for more body colour type of effect in watercolour. Mostly I seem to be able to identify them as brick or roof, but I think they are more versatile than that, especially where you do not necessarily want to leave paper shining through a very transparent dilution as it makes then subject look insubstantial. Well done you if you can manage a large palette when in the move!

    Maybe the Davy's grey instead of the silver? Am glad to see someone else does mixing swatches almost as obsessively as I do 😁 Am doing some now because I burned out on the series I was working on for the last couple of weeks. It's good to switch to that to give the mind a break from the pure creativity-generating IMO. Will you be demo-ing a painting or sketch with this palette? It would be fun to see how you use it.

    The silver's out. I chucked it out immediately after filming. I won't use that. Swatching is indeed a great break from any creative 'pressure'. I will sure demo this set of paints and show how it turns out finally. And I intend to get into the color choice in depth and on the mixes I can do with this set. Which is a lot!

    I've heard that before, but unfortunately M. Graham is next to impossible to get here and bonkers expensive because of it, so I'm leaving it out of the selection for now.

    There’s a gentleness to viridian combined with the granulation that is stunning…also great for glazing over water and ocean pictures. But I wouldn’t decant it into a pan as when it dries it’s near impossible to rewet. I carry viridian in a tube. Have you considered the single pigment perm alizarin by W&N which is a great mixer? I also feel shimmer colours best kept in their own box as once they contaminate another colour they are there to stay. Do you like lavender? That’s a colour I’ve really come to appreciate for gentle slightly moody backgrounds, though easily mixed with the colours you have on your palette. And I couldn’t be without cobalt turquoise light and cobalt turquoise. They mix some beautiful shades with depth and interest. You’ve got nearly all of my favourites in your chosen palette…fabulous!

    Yes, that is what I think too about the viridian. That's why I left it out, although I love it more than the phthalo green. But that will stay in the tube better. Ahhh...so amazing our choices come across so much! But I think that people who paint a lot with watercolor will soon appreciate many of the same properties perhaps. The W&N perm alizarin crimson I'll look into, but I think it's the same pigment as deep scarlet by Daniel Smith, isn't it? I'm not sure, I'll check. I spent hours on finding the one lightfast alizarin crimson alternative, so I found some. And a great mix I will make myself for a slightly different hue. But I can't remember about the W&N, although I know I've looked into it...brain blubber after 3 fulltime days of pigment sorting and mixing charts :-)

    @@MandyvanGoeije the PAC is PR206...not 175, I understand it's unique across the main paint makers. In this form it's a deep deep rose without the brown yellow undertones of a lot of the mixes. Hope that helps I'm not surprised your brain is spinning from comparing so many pigments xx

    I can’t live without lavender. It’s such a great shadow color. Most of my paint is Daniel Smith in my main palette. I also would have to keep quinacridone coral but only because it is my favorite color and I love it. 😁 Your palette is going to be lovely!

    Lavender is a lovely color, indeed. I have a nice tube here by DS and I love it. It's just that I'm trying to find as many single pigment colors as I can. But if I have a spot left... :-)

    The PR177 in that permanent alizarin crimson is also fugitive, which is a shame, because it's my favorite cool red. I have replaced mine with carmine, though it doesn't have the same "umph." As for suggestions, since you love the greens so much, how about a cobalt turquoise (PB36) or Schmincke's Cobalt Green Dark (PG26)? Both are gorgeous, soft, highly granulating colors that mix well and that I think might fit your style. Unless you've already weeded them out. 😄

    OMG.....I made a mistake with the PR177...I wrote down it was lightfast, but since you've mentioned it, I remember...aarrghhhhh....BUT...it got me to a late night quest for the perfect mix to replace this color...or the PR149, really, which was the first color it all started with and that's also fugitive but that I want so bad. I WILL find a lightfast alternative!!! :-) The PB36 I'm not sure about. The two versions I have a rather dull and more towards the blue than the green, so I shoved them aside for now. The PG26 I have by Qor and it's wonderful and dark and intense. That might be an option too. It granulates very heavily so there would be no lack of texture! Thanks for the tips! :-)

    @@MandyvanGoeije Oh no, the perylene scarlet PR 149 is fugitive?!? I was under the impressions that perylene colours were generally good in lightfastness! Can you never really trust the info on the tubes? Well that should teach me too make my own tests with the colours I have, I guess. It just makes me sad when my favourites turn out not to be lightfast. Since I use PR149 for black mixes it's rather important that it stays or else all my blacks in my paintings will turn green in time 😱

    I much prefer the viridian over the phtalo, in mixes. Can I ask how do you use the Onetz? I just bought it but don`t know why.. x)

    I can imagine. The phthalo green is insane intense. I like the viridian better in mixes for natural colors as well. I'm deliberating between these two still...a bit... Ah, the Onetz is a mystery to me too still. I bought it, but have yet to try it as well :-) If all's well, it should improve the flow of the paint you use. But I was told to only add it to diluted paint in wells, not in the pans themselves. No idea why. I have yet to look into it :-) If you find out what it does for you before I do, please let me know...I'm curious too :-)

    Yes. True. The plan is to start with many and then to see which of these pigments I use enough to remain in a smaller set and which can go.

    @@MandyvanGoeije Great idea, very interesting indeed. Persueing a perfect Pallette among artists is very much like persueing the perfect blossom in the Japanese culture. It's a sort of living love for them. Wish you success! Will be definitely following the process.

    Thanks Mandy for the video! The struggle is real, it takas ages to choose the ultimate palette. I've add burnt sienna for mixing greys or did I just miss it?!

    Hehehe....yes, isn't it? My husband is growing a deep respect for my persistence in the struggle and he begins to understand more and more how massively important it can be to an artist to have the perfect palette, the perfect balance in colors and the perfect lightfastness and behaviour properties. There's no burnt sienna in the set, no. I chose PO48 and a very deep brown PR101 instead. Those I could mix to a burnt sienna. Or at least, that's the idea. But admittedly, I wonder if I can get away with it since the po48 is maybe a bit too luminous. Oh boy, I'm going to need a bigger box! :-)

    That's a hard task to narrow the selection of colors when have such a variety. I always look though my swatch cards and pick colors before starting a painting. But making an ultimate palette seems impossible to me. I made 2 pocket palettes for plein airs, but it's not the same... Btw I always forget to ask, if you scanned and posted somewhere the Nila Colori swatches. I would like to get few colors to make a limited palette (4 or 6) and it would really help. Do you remember which colors impressed you the most? I don't care about lightfastness in this case.

    Yes, it's hard work indeed. I used to work like you, but I found it sometimes holds me up a bit longer than I like and then I get lazy and head back to a set of familiar colors already on the table. So I wanted to put in the effort now and see if I can improve my gamma a bit. I loved all of the Nila Colori, really. It's such an organic palette that they have. The Malachite is wonderful...bright and a lovely fifties light green. The Cochineal is wonderful too. No lightfastness there, but gorgeous. Although it looks a bit like a violet PV19, but then way more organic. Vivianite is a great grey, the Lapis Lazuli is a really soft and tender blue and the Stil the Grain is just amazing. I think those are the ones that I feel stand out for me personally. I'm not sure it makes a well balanced palette, but it could be a start. Also check if they have any new colors, for it's been a while since I tried these, so they may well have expanded their collection.

    @@MandyvanGoeije thanks for the suggestions! They do have some new colors, but some like Vivianite and Lapis Lazuli are not available, I will definitely get Malachite and Cochineal, still need to think about the blues. They have now 2 rare blues on PB30 and PB31, lovely shades.
