I truly hope your health returns quickly, Mandy. Forgive me if I tell you things here you already know. I have the 72-pencil set of Derwent Lightfast. By "light fast" Derwent is counting only artwork that is maintained under museum conditions, which is no different from what Caran D'Ache does. The C D'A Luminance 6901 pencils have tested as light fast against the ASTM-D6901 standard just as the Derwent pencils have. Derwent, though, put its Lightfast pencils through the blue wool test as well. Whether that means that Derwent's pencils are *more* light fast than C D'A's in or outside of museum conditions has not been documented. Plus, not all buyers will maintain museum conditions, so some colors in the art they buy may nonetheless shift or fade regardless of which brand's pencils were used. As for working with the pencils, I haven't noticed any great differences with my smaller Luminance set (a gift). While I am not disappointed in the Lightfasts, I use the pencils mainly to add detail and nuanced color to watercolor and gouache, not to make the kind of (wonderful!) pencil drawings you make, so my observations might differ a lot from yours. The Lightfast palette is a little muted because Derwent omitted problematic pigments. Some of my Lightfast colors are a little scratchy. Some are a little waxy, show pencil strokes, and allow for about four layers, while other colors allow for another one or two layers on top of that. If you happen to have the less expensive Derwent Drawing Pencils, you may find as I did that the Lightfast pencils are similar and that the sets contain some very similar colors. While Derwent will always put its pencils on sale again, the vintage set you inherited is a one-and-only for you. Are the blue wool test results important enough to you to justify giving up the vintage set? Do you think most of the people who buy the art you will make in the time before the next Derwent sale will find meeting the ASTM-D6901 standard alone to be insufficient? Will the buyers provide museum conditions for the art over the decades? How many of them would expect colors not to shift and fade over time, especially if they do not mount the art behind UV glass and provide light, temperature, air purity, and humidity controls like those of a museum? But - if instead it comes down to your wanting to get the Derwents right now because you *want* them - well, dilemma solved! Get them! Fresh art supplies can be energizing, something you could use a boost of right now. Again, I hope you soon feel well again 100%. Be gentle with yourself, please.

Hi Susana, thanks for your extensive reply. Everything you say is true. Lightfastness is just that one thing that cannot be guaranteed outside museum conditions and who has such conditions in their homes? You're absolutely right about that. I also wonder if color pencil fades as quickly as watercolor does. I mean, with watercolor lightfastness of pigments IS important as some pigments will fade within days, even hours under not-so ideal circumstances. Just apply opera rose on a painting, hang in on a sunny wall and within days, sometimes hours, the bright pink has gone. Same with many reds. Diluting pigments with water will always make them more prone to shift color. The lighter your layer of paint, the more it is susceptible to changes from light. So it's imprinted on my brain that I NEED lightfastness in my art supplies. But you are right to question that supposition. Do I really? Color pencil is not diluted in the same way as watercolor is. Especially not when layering as much as I do. It's a very interesting topic and very good to question. I'm going to give it some more thought. And thanks...I will be gentle with myself. Promise :-)

I have both Lightfast and a number of Luminance, in all honestynrathernthan getting a full set of either one, as some colours are very similar I pick and choose the colours I like to make up a set that would meet my needs. The Lightfast are smoother and creamier to use, they have some wonderful.dark colours but lack the tone gradations in you get in Luminace. Together both brands would probably cover everything.

Ah yes...composing a personal set of colors is usually always better. Now it's just that before the holidays here in the Netherlands the sales prices of the sets are so low that it's way more advantageous to buy a full set than composing sets of single pencils of which the price per piece is now up to 2 times higher than when you buy the full set. I like reading the lightfast are smoother and creamier to use. I love especially that in color pencils. That's what I love so much about my Polychromos. And yes, I noticed some colors are missing in the Lightfast collection. I've already got a list of 30 colors in the Luminance that I might buy as single pencils to fill in the color gaps of the Lightfast. It's an addiction, art supplies :-)

“…as soon as my head is functioning again the way I want it to.” Good Lord, if I had a dollar for every time I have said that about myself. :-D Unrelated: your videos on granulating paints inspired me to separate my own paints by granulating and non-granulating and then play with making my own custom mixes. And I wanted to share with you that I found a granulating yellow. Two, actually: PY53 from DaVinci is softly granulating; then PBr24 yellow titanate (NOT Naples yellow deep) is a special edition from Winsor & Newton and is heavily granulating. They are both quite opaque. DaVinci’s PBr24 Naples yellow deep isn’t quite as orange-leaning/warm as the Winsor Newton special edition color….but the DaVinci also doesn’t granulate as heavily. Not sure if you are still looking for granulating yellows, but I thought I would share.

The Sennelier Naples Yellow Deep, also a PBr24, is beautifully bright and also granulating. The W&N Lemon Yellow Deep, PY159, is cooler, paler and granulating. As for orange granulating paints the White Nights Naples Orange, PY216, granulates. All of these are more on the opaque side, and beautiful in my opinion! ☺️ Oh, and the Roman Szmal PBr24! It's deeper and darker (and beautiful!) and granulates heavily.

Inktense is idd fijn. Ik ben benieuwd wat je daar mee doet als je het hebt over effecten zonder dat het door elkaar gaat lopen. Heb je ergens werk online staan?

So sorry you have been ill, and happy you are on the mend. I don’t know what antibiotics you were prescribed, but in the future I definitely avoid levaquin (levoflaxacin) if you can. It has horrible side effects, including fuzzy cognitive issues and insomnia. Hopefully, your health will soon be back to normal. I have missed your videos, which are informative as well as amusing. That tree is amazing, please do more of those! I recommend watching the video Derwent filmed showing their manufacturing process of their pencils. There is a lot of care and quality control. Looking forward to seeing what you choose and more videos on your palette. Wishing you well😘

Thanks so much! Aarghh...it was the Levoflaxacin indeed...and another one that has the exact same side effects. I read that even though I was so seasick and fuzzy and yes I do have the insomnia problem as well...BUT...these meds can also cause torn Achilles heel tendons, psychosis and hallucinations!!! I am SO glad I did not have that! Seasick, fuzziness and insomnia...it's not nice, but I can deal with that. And the seasickness has worn off to the point where I can drive short distances now and I even went to a plant store today. Bending all the way over to check the price on the pots wasn't too good an idea, but other than that, I'm so much better than I was. I trust the fuzziness will wear off and hopefully the shards of night rest will soon melt together to full night's sleeps again. Fingers crossed. Thanks for the video tip of the Derwent pencils. I'm going to check that one out for sure! There's a color pencil shop in the Netherlands and the lady promised to send me a Lightfast sample so I can compare it to the luminance. I'm looking forward to that very much. I can't wait to try. And the tree? Yes, I'm already working on the next. This time I colored the paper myself. I'll make a little video about that if I can.

I have the 72 sets of artist grade colored pencil from Caran D'Ache, Derwent, Faber Castell and Lyra as well as some Prisma Colors. It isn't a question of either or. Just the other day I picked the four 72 sets and compared them side by side. Luminance are softer than Derwent Lightfast. The Lightfast are softer than the Polychromos and the hardest of the four is Lyra Rembrandt. So if you want soft edges you go for Lumminance and Lightfast. Details it's Polychromos and Rembrandt. There were months even years between my purchases. I suggest you go with single colors or smaller sets to get a feel for them. The Prisma Color still softer than the Luminance. Derwent has the brightest white, though Luminance is very close. I'm not going to buy a large set of Prisma Colors. My set of ten is plenty. For when lightfastness is not an issue I have the Brutfuner, which are par with Prisma Color when it comes to creaminess, and you get 150 set for ~50€ last time I checked. Hope that helped.

Ah, Brutfuner! I have been curious about that brand for a long time now as I've read many great reviews about it. For me lightfastness is only an issue in work that I sell, so as a layer of pencil on top of watercolor. But in illustration work lightfastness is no issue as it will be reproduced anyway. I might pop in a Brutfuner order some day, to try. They have really cute pastel colours, I noticed...
