Moving About and Manipulating Objects

Moving About and Manipulating Objects

Welcome! I'm Duffy Moon, aka MAMO, and here you'll find what appears to be a somewhat random assortment of videos.

However, you'll find that my videos tend to fall into four main categories; that is, four subjects of particular interest to me.

1) On Sundays: videos about the Book of Common Prayer, the Christian Bible, or related books.

2) On Tuesdays: videos about my collection of vintage manual typewriters.

3) On Wednesdays: videos focusing on my love for graphite pencils (vintage or contemporary, American or imported).

4) On Fridays: generally videos about radio, primarily portable and budget shortwave receivers.

Sometimes Fridays are Wild Card Friday, and I deviate from the normal subject matter.

Also: I don't publish videos EVERY Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. But I do try to put out a few videos every week.

Come on in, watch what you like and like what you watch!

    This is a straight up Chinese stolen design from Lamy - pronounced Law-Me. This was meant to be a fountain pen. The section that you shoved the eraser in is where the ink cartridge or converter would go. The hole on the pen is called an ink window, which would indicate your ink level and when you would need to either put a new cartridge in or fill up the converter with bottled fountain pen ink. This writing instrument just put the tip of the pencil where the nib should be and housed the eraser in the body. Totally embarrassing, if you ask me.

  • @ma-mo
    @ma-moКүн бұрын

    @@poppyglow That seems to be the consensus, and it explains many of the bizarre design elements, ones which do not belong on a pencil.

  • @poppyglow
    @poppyglowКүн бұрын

    I will solve your mystery. One end of the writing instrument is a pencil, and the other end is a dip pen. The metal will hold a speedball type of nib. There are so many brands and types. Children in Europe were taught to write in both pencil and dip pen/ fountain pen. Their desk would contain a hole, most likely for an ink well that would contain the ink to dip their pen. So, if you would like to purchase the nibs for these pencils, they are all over the (e store) and they are pretty cheap - for children. Some dip pens, I have in my collection can be very expensive and are made of 24k gold, like Mabie Todd. Children did not use them. I would say that these are from 1930's or earlier. Nice find.

    @@ma-mo I have collected pens and pencils for over 40 years and have thousands of them ranging from junk to thousands of dollars and one of a kind. I have been dealing with long covid since March 2020 and it is currently killing me. My job, as an auditor at Meyers and Stauffer fired me in October and instead of getting depressed, I decided to write short books about pens and pencil companies and their offerings and offer them free for the community - my goal. I'm just getting started getting organized and researching lol. I know most about Paper Mate so it will be a good example. Paper mate was owned first by Gillette, then Reynolds, Then Sanford, and now Newell. They offer pens, pencils, erasers, correction fluid, desk sets, radios, yes radios, and other things. They also have "offshoots" like eraser mate, Flair (Which is also made in India now), Etc. They also made promotional pens and pencils and some models are only used via promotional. They make some models that are and are not made in the US that are not sold in the US. For Example, the Paper Mate Mark VI, fountain Pen, the best fountain pen I have ever used and rumored to be made by Mont Blanc, was sold to UK and other countries, not the US. It was made in West Germany in the 80's. I have three and they cost a lot of money in the US. They have pens and pencils for only the Australian market, the Mexican market, and there were a couple new ones that were made for the Philippines that I can't get my hands on. This is just one Brand and there is so much more. Multiply that by hundreds of companies and brands like Eagle, Venus, Prismacolor, the list is absolutely amazing. So, you can say, well look it up on the internet, lol nope there really isn't anything but a few sentences or you can go on boards and get people saying I think, I'm not sure, and I don't know all day long. I have been using the Internet Archive and they may be going away, per lawsuit. I contacted Newell about Paper Mate history and they said all they have is what is on their website, which is a joke. The truth of the matter nobody knows anything. I thought it must be because I am looking up vintage pens and pencils, not the case either. I just bought a beautiful fountain pen on amazon for 5 bucks by Mr. Pen. I wanted to see if they came in different colors, if I could by a converter, if there were other nib sizes. I looked on amazon, no information, I looked on Mr. Pen website no information. I then stumbled across the same pen that is made in England called Papier, I believe, so a new rabbit hole. A lot of pens now are made by someone and are sold to different companies, and they put their logos on them. There are also expensive pens that are reproductions made in China like Jinhao rabbit hole. There are also pens that are absolute fakes, the biggest examples are Parker, Mont Blanc, Lamy rabbit hole. It is huge and vast my friend and it also includes pencils. The fakes are getting so good that even the experts can't tell them apart. They have the same materials, weights, colorings, etc. If you ever decide to come down this rabbit hole, let me know because I could use a friend because it is way bigger than Xanax!

    Wow, what a find. Vintage but modern, you can easily restore it to full usability by replacing that eraser with a newer Pentel or Pilot one. They're sold in batches for fairly cheap, and in this standard diameter too. A bingo right there IMO. Regarding the Japanese origins, early before the 70s Japan was what China was known until the late 2010s: the junk makers that Western companies outsourced production to for cost reduction reasons. Their product quality started out not very impressive, and it took a few decades for them to be known for good, well-made, high-precision industrial goods. Sure, there were brands like Pentel that defied this definition, but they're the exception that proves the rule. The similarity with the P209 Sharp is no coincidence, I bet: the combo of "yellow drafting pencil" and "0.9mm lead" is iconic. Though I can appreciate Berol experimenting by designing the slightly shorter lead sleeve. I've heard a decent number of complaints that Pentel's 4mm sleeve is too long, and some people even dremel-cut them to be shorter. It's funny but fitting that 0.9 was known as "thin". For the lead gamut we have as standard now, it's on the thick and sturdy side, sure, but when you stop and think, that's still a bit thinner than a medium point ballpoint pen, which is in itself reasonably thin. You can make some pretty fine writing, sketching and detailing with 0.9 still, at least within the realm of regular paper, and especially if you rotate the pacer in your hand so the lead wears out evenly. As a matter of taste, it has firmly cemented itself as my favourite lead caliber. Depending on how I wear out the point, I can write thin, I can write bold and brush-like (perfect for dynamic Japanese handwriting), and even in days when my motor control is shot, I don't need to fear breaking the lead since it's so solid.

    I could take or leave those gouges myself. Maybe they'd fit better for smaller thinner fingertips like a child's, but I found that recesses in my writing tools are irrelevant to my experience. I write the same with any grip, be it smooth, knurled, indented, cushioned, whatever. If Deli offers a perfectly flat and smooth version of the Smart Go for a bit cheaper, I'd take it over this. So fun fact, MAMO: you and Kevin have reviewed plenty of these larger "jumbo"/"beginner's"/"comfort" pencils, and in my last visit to my stationery shop I got curious. So I purchased one such pencil for myself, in my case a Molin* Jumbo HB. It's probably the oddest pencil I own: it writes with the darkness of an HB, the tactile feedback of an F or H (dry and scratchy, but doesn't affect performance), and the point retention of a 4H if not harder. I swear, I sharpened it _once,_ even oversharpened it by mistake, and despite writing several notebook pages' worth of text, I can't seem to shorten or blunt that spike on the end! 🤣 *: Brazilian brand, may or may not be outsourced to Linc, not sure

I prefer The New English Hymnal myself but do also like The Ausbund(used by Amish and conservative Mennonites)

    This was a delight to watch. Today will be a more refined and wise day for me, and in my interaction with others - in part because of this few minutes and verses covered. 🙏

    I see all of Proverbs is Wisdom, and I have never heard of this book. I believe I may add it to my Summer list of items I am scheduled to read. My main reads will be The Fire Bible commentary by Donald Stamps, and The Ignatius Catholic Study Bible NT commentaries. I also just rebound a nice Oxford version of the Apocrypha I need to get back to. I do love to read....just wish some of it would soak in. take care

    This type of video resembles the "My pencil collection" video by RixCanDoIt (I guess you already know about him), many years back.
