Historic Pencils, or: What Makes a Pencil a Pencil?

A discussion of pencil history based on an article in The Pencil Collector (newsletter for the APCS) by editor Misti Ann Medders, about the 1858 patent for a graphite pencil with eraser.
Also in this video are three different pencils (from Eagle, Eberhard Faber, and Wallace) based on that patented design.

That was interesting how they included the eraser in those early pencils! And that is quite the name.

One has to tread carefully, even in innocuous videos about pencils.

Great show. I like how you showed examples from the article. You gave the best thoughts on the Supreme Court 🙂👍 - had to smile about that. Elaboration of articles from the APCS is such a great idea. Well done!

Wonderful episode and thanks for sharing those early pencils with incorporated erasers! You don't see a lot of those and it was fun to get up close to these three examples. I agree that using the date the Lipman applied for the patent is a milestone in pencil history but why was that used for National Pencil Day? Perhaps there aren't many other known definite dates related to the history of pencil making? Regardless, you have a lot of goodies in that box and hopefully we will get to see some of them in future episodes. Thanks!

The Lipman method of adding erasers makes sense, but you can tell it has the air of a prototypical design, and why it was replaced with the ferrule system we know so well. 1. The eraser having to fit into the barrel naturally limits its size. Not a problem if you are, say, drafting, as small size = precision, but if you're writing or drawing and need the extra erasure power, it's not useful. Ferrule-attached erasers aren't that much better but at least they can erase entire words without feeling like you're cutting down a tree with a bread knife. 2. The eraser is inconvenient to access. The graphite end can be run through a sharpener, but really, the only way to sharpen the eraser end without wasting the rubber is by carving it with a knife. 3. A pencil with that much space dedicated to an eraser is naturally a shorter-lived pencil. In the age before easy access to printing and especially digital writing, or heck, before the convenience of ballpoint pens, pencils were used way more. Not hard to imagine users not wanting to lose out on usability in favour of a gimmick. None of this is factual, just my observations and speculations. Any newcomers, DO _NOT_ take my words as fact.

Wow ...pencil collecting a national thing. Is there a yearly meeting or something where you all get together like a Pencil Fest..like we do for Beatles?

There actually is a biannual PencilCon. This summer it'll be in Minnesota. Sadly I won't be in attendance. Perhaps in 2026, if the world still exists.

I am wondering about why (US)Americans are so obsessed about erasors on pencils ... maybe it is because it was an US-evention. - No, how many knows and care about that. I never user the erasors on my mecanical pencils (exception is one BiC Magic pencil I bring on travels on plains...) and on wooden pencils, are seldom use the erasors when I get a pencil with erasor. - I prefor a shorter pencil - and a rubber in my opposite hand.

Good question. I prefer pencils without erasers, but those aren't easily found in the US.
