I love pencils without erasers. And I love the hollow ground tip that sharpener put on those pencils.

    Agreed on both, my friend.

I'm consistently impressed by these Deli products. They perform better than expected in pretty much all cases and, smell aside, deliver a pleasant experience. This one is most definitely a 2B as advertised - based on your square-filling tests, I've compared pencils of different hardnesses and that gradient is definitely the difference between standard HB and soft 2B. As long as you don't sniff these NUsign pencils too much, they should be good to keep on the desk cup. Finally, don't sweat your handwriting, my friend. It may not be stylish, but it is perfectly legible, and that is really the main point of handwriting, isn't it? It's not the same as calligraphy, which is an actual art style but with a loss of points in practical value.

The black wood is interesting. I wonder how it is made to be black? The Ticonderoga Noir is also made of black wood. Great review!

I fear it was some quite odoriferous and possibly toxic chemical bath. Thank you, my friend.

I wonder if they may have started with a naturally dark wood like ebony, mahogany, walnut, rosewood and then added the smelly stuff to color them darker? Enjoyed the review!

That sounds logical. Or maybe they chose a wood that's porous enough to absorb lots of stain. It's definitely not a natural look, but it is rather striking against the pastel finish.

I doubt it. All those wood types you listed are fine and expensive, far too much to make cheap pencils with. IMO MAMO is more likely to be correct, this is a very porous balsa-like wood that they stained to give it a uniform look.

Would the smell go away if they sat out of the box for a while? I also saw these on Temu and was curious about them.

You're exactly right; I've left them out of their packaging and now there's barely a hint of any unpleasant odour. Thanks!

These brought to mind a set of pencils I once used where the barrel was a composite of recycled denim rather than wood. A strange experience to sharpen. Did you look at the shavings from these by any chance?

I remember those denim pencils, though I've never tried them; such a strange but clever idea. Using a simple hand sharpener would have given a better hint to the nature of this pencil's wood. Sadly I was too distracted by the happy coincidence of how well the pencil matched the rotary sharpener!

Denim? Now that's a curious material to make pencils out of. But then again, there are pencils made out of recycled paper, old paper was made out of recycled linen, and all three materials are plant fibers in the end, so it makes sense.
