Reynolds Energi Super Dark Pencils: A Review (Your Radiant Companion)

A review of Reynolds "Energi", "Super Dark Pencils". Apparently an Indian branch of Newell Brands (of Paper Mate, among other brands names), these are the first Reynolds pencils I've tried.

Dark - dark - dark! That triangular box is a first, but a nice marketing tie-in with the pencil shape. Funny about it being a Newell product. Corporations are so trans-global now, and so Paper Mate has roots in India with this brand. I know that Reynolds also sells inexpensive ballpoint pens (I haven't tried them), but this pencils sure have me sold. Thanks, MAMO!

Thanks for sharing. Looks like another quality Hindustan product. I, also, had not heard of these. I’ll have to pick some up.

Reynolds is not a Hindustan Pencils product. And it is not even an Indian brand originally.

@@Crazytesseract do you know who makes these? They have all of the telltale signs of being made by Hindustan. I believe these are similar to the old Casemate/Pen+Gear relationship between Hindustan making pencils for Walmart as a private label product. It sure looks to me like these are made by Hindustan for Newell under a private label.

@@TheThirdeYe1337 I really do not know who makes them. If you have used them and they feel like a Hindustan product, you may be right. I haven't used them.

Very interesting pencils. Snazzy to look at, nice on the hand, and pleasant writers. I'd have loved to take these to school during my middle/high school days. I mentioned to Kevin once that after a certain point in the hardness scale, a bolder pencil than others doesn't really draw a darker trace, at least that the naked eye can perceive. IME, after you go softer than 2B, the difference between B grades is more tactile than anything. 6B may be just as dark as 3B to my eye when I use them to write, but the friction on the paper is not even in the same league. Too bad the sharpener, like pretty much all plastic single blade sharpener, blows. I have completely sworn off of those, and only purchased one out of necessity - I got a jumbo pencil that is far too thick for my Deli-like crank sharpener, and I'm not in the mood to use a knife to put a point on it.

Using these makes me want to put my Casio on my wrist and get my acid-washed denim jacket on.

@@ma-mo Do it. You're a free soul! I actually do wear a Casio every day I go out, and a denim jacket when it's chilly and windy, being 33 doesn't stop me 😝 Except the jacket is pure, no stone or acid wash. Like heck I'm _paying_ for damage to my fabric, let zoomers do that.

Thanks for the review! Btw no one in India makes sharpeners like Hindustan. This is a comment I made on "Always Analog" for the Tombow 8900 B review. No reply received yet. Can you answer it, MAMO? I just got a box of Tombow 8900 in HB. On Amazon they specifically stated the country of origin as Japan. Even your box says 'Made in Japan'. I was expecting to get the same, but was slightly surprised to see 'Made in Vietnam' on the box. Your package is 2022 (V2201 on the pencil) production and so is mine (K2203 on mine; I know the quality should be as good, but then Amazon should have stated that). Can anyone tell when was production moved to Vietnam? Or maybe the B pencils were still made in Japan in 2022.

I have actually never purchased an entire box of Tombows, surprisingly. All the ones I have I bought as singles from CW Pencil Enterprise (moment of silence). So, unfortunately, I'm not much help in solving that mystery.

@@ma-mo If you want, check the date code on the Tombows: it is a 5 character code: like K2203. K is probably factory code. First two digits: Year. Next two: month.
