Ticonderoga Tri-Write: Classic Pencil in a New Shape

A review of some new old-stock Dixon Ticonderoga Tri-Write pencils. According to Dixon Ticonderoga's website, these are still being manufactured (in Mexico) but they no longer specify cedar as the barrel's wood.

It seems that Ticonderoga does excellent quality in attaching the ferrule to the triangular body on one side and the round eraser on the other. Thank you for this enjoyable review.

Good point. I didn't mention that, but you're absolutely right.

Hi MAMO - how nice that you found a box that were made when they were still using cedar! There is something about a triangular pencil that I find really comfortable. I'm with you - given the choice I will take a Try-Rex! Thanks!

These are pretty nice, but almost nothing beats a Try-Rex. Thanks, Kevin.

Isn't it possible that it seems smaller because your fingers touch a flat surface without the pressure hotspot from a hex or round pencil? Even if the diameter is the same, the fingers feel like they close tighter around the pencil because of that. I have a cheap mechanical pencil here with a triangular body that is, flat-to-point, a bit wider than a standard Pentel Sharp (for reference), and yet it seems smaller when held. That part about being worse to pick up off a flat surface is too right. I've dropped triangular pencils and pens when wearing gloves and they were much harder to pick up normally than anything with a hex profile. Luckily the only stationery with a triangular grip that I use often, the Faber-Castell Trilux ballpoint, is only triangular at the front end where the fingers go, while the rest of the body is round. Very easy to pick up in the rare cases of me dropping my pen.

    That is: quite likely.

I used triangular YIKES! pencils in the 90's. Not sure they would work for me today. As I recall other than the novelty I wasn't a big fan of the shape.

As it turns out, for a standard-sized pencil, I prefer hex or round. Make that pencil a little bit larger and I'll take triangular (or unique Try-Rex) ten times out of ten.
