I have the Second Sight edition of Picnic at Hanging rock which has both cuts of the film. I really love the way it looks and it still has a ton of detail in most of the film despite the usage of DNR. I think people complain about this set too much. The director signed off on the restoration and didn't really go full on George Lucas on it so I'm ok with it. Speaking of Seven Samuari on 4K...I believe the movie is on 4K in Japan as well as some other Kurosawa titles (if my memory serves me correctly). I expect that a Kurosawa 4K boxed set is somewhere down the line. The Studio Canal 4K of Ran looks amazing btw!
Do you think a Kurosawa box set is in the works?
I had this on VHS, then Criterion’s first DVD which was absolutely horrible, then their remastered DVD, then the bluray…….I’m going to go broke. 😢
Favorite movie. This will be a quadruple dip for me if its released on 4k disc. VHS (2 tapes) DVD (as part of the Kurosawa box set) Criterion Blu Ray
Yikes! I almost bought Seven Samurai! I dodged a bullet! 😂 My gratitude to everybody that bought 2K!
An announcement for the November releases makes sense. A big release at the end of a sale month (like Risky Business this month and After Hours during the last July sale) will move a lot of units.
Hopefully both SS and a Twin Peaks boxset in 4K. A man can dream
So far I’ve picked up the 4K releases of Peeping Tom and Le Samouraï. 2 down and 2 to go. Risky Business and Farewell My Concubine. Just have to wait until July 23rd.
Just watched my new 4k upgrade of Fear and Loathing. Vegas looked awesome
Rad. I have the Bluray criterion. Still have never popped it in. Whats wrong with me?!?
if anyone else has noticed, about halfway thru the new 4k release, the audio gets corrupted for about five seconds. its during the scene where alice asks pete out to dinner.
I don't care about 4K. What Criterion needs to do is release the Kurosawa box set on blu-ray, since it is only on DVD and long out of print. So far have not picked up anything as the 2 Barnes and Nobles by me did not have anything I wanted in stock. They have shrunk their Criterion sections by a lot.
I watched this on Tubi earlier this year. Loved it.
I wish i had been able to catcb this live! I did pick up the Dont Look Now 4k. Gonna watch it tomorrow after work 👍🏻
This would be amazing news if we get this on physical soon. I couldn’t help but comment on Harakiri. It’s the best samurai movie of all time and might be one of the best movies ever made. The Blu-ray looks fantastic I know you don’t buy backlog movies much but this is a must own. Anyway just my opinion something to consider. Have a good one.
Are you having a giveaway on the blue velvet blu-ray anytime soon?
I just might. We shall see 😀.
State of MCU films
Thanks for the feedback, Jordan!
If u could only pick one out of these, which would it be?
Duncan, you can’t go wrong with Stagecoach or My Darling Clementine. Or any really 😀.
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid is one of my favorites! Particularly the final preview cut that comes on blu-ray. It's got a rough look but more authentic edit imo
I watched the movie for the first time this weekend and really enjoyed it. Looking forward to sharing thoughts on it!
I picked it up with the B&N sale and watched it last night. It looked great but I noticed the 4k disc reads as Trainspotting even though it’s indeed Blue Velvet.
Hello, Todd! I saw the same thing on my player - it reads as Trainspotting. Guess I’m not the only one 😀.
Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid is the release of the year. One of Peckinpah’s most underrated movies next to Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia.
Hello, Jesse! I enjoyed Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid and look forward to sharing thoughts soon. I have not yet seen Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia so I’ll need to check that one out at some point.
@@20thand21stMovies im gonna b checking out your video when it drops. I haven’t picked up that release or seen reviews on the new release so your video will be the first I go and see. Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia kind of has an oppressive atmosphere throughout and it feels like a soul-crushing hangover. It’s my favorite Sam Peckinpah movie. It was made in the 70s. It’s unpredictable and raw.
Anyone know why they didn’t just release the 4k last year? I am refusing to buy now as it seems suspiciously close and comes off like a money grab.
Good question, Tracy. Not sure about the reasoning/why for the timing of the 4K release for this title. Hard to say. It’s a good edition and the 4K is solid so if one is a fan of Lynch or this film it’s recommended.
I'm not sure what you mean by "last year". The bluray was released in 2019. I agree that it certainly should have just been released as 4KUHD to begin with.
Do you have a Letterboxd account? Love the content and your insight!
Hello, Michael! I do have a Letterboxd but I have not kept it updated so I’m way behind on it. 20thand21st
Just picked this up during the “50% off” sale! One of my favorite Gilliam films. Great review.
Glad you enjoyed the review and that you were able to get a copy!
Didn’t know Okja was on Criterion! Great film. Been getting a few Bong films lately and I will put that in my wishlist 😊 David Lynch is my fave. I own Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks on Criterion, need to upgrade Lost Highway still 😊 My other faves that I own are Hausu, Ghost World, Trainspotting and Cure
Bong Joon Ho and David Lynch are two great filmmakers for sure. Love their films! I need to rewatch Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me and watch the tv series as I never caught that one during its initial run.
@@20thand21stMovies Definitely check out the series! Feel free to nap through some of the episodes of season 2 though lol
I just watched this on the Criterion Channel. Amazing!! Classic psychological thriller
Totally agree, Archie! Peeping Tom was a great discovery for me as well this year. So good.
Great discussion, pal!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I just got 2 Swedish silent movies ( Haxan and Phantom Carriage), Onibaba, Kuroneko, High and Low ( this one bought from a guy who never opened the case). Oh, I forgot... Vampyr by Carl Dryer.
Very nice pickups, John! Well done. Onibaba was a nice discovery for me a few years ago. Hope you enjoy those!
eh. i found it kinda dull. predictable. uninspired.
I enjoyed it but was hoping for a little more.
Great review! Posted my 3 film review last night as well.
Glad you enjoyed the review, Brian! I’ll check out your thoughts on these films as I’m interested to see what others are thinking about the trilogy now that MaXXXine is out.
Thanks James! I've got Pearl, like it a lot, haven't seen X, might get it now before Maxxxine. After watching Pearl I was very surprised about how excellent Mia Goth is as an actress.
Hello, Pete! Yes, Mia Goth is the engine that makes this series of films work along with the creative genius of Ti West.
I also picked up The Victim of Sin, but also got I am Cuba, and Peeping Tom. Still have to watch the last two, but the best pickup I've had so far, and in a LONG time, was All that Money can Buy (aka The Devil and Daniel Webster) - Wow! Absolutely wonderful!
I also watched All That Money Can Buy recently and agree it is a great edition. Enjoy those pickups!
Just picked up days of heaven, daises, thin red line, 8 1/2, Barry Lyndon, the graduate, and portrait of a lady on fire 💪🏼
Nice. All of those are excellent editions. Enjoy!
Awesome, awesome movie. Just got out 🤙🏻🤙🏻
Nice. Glad you enjoyed it, Nick!
I saw it Thursday night brilliant. Horror/Mystery mix
Yes, good movie. Satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. Was hoping it was a little better but it was fine.
@@20thand21stMovies I agree also. A little underwhelming ending but entertaining. It does have a Hitchcock/Argento vibe
I love the movie. Luckily, I’ve never owned it so I jumped on the 4K at half price.
Awesome time to pick up Blue Velvet, Gary. Enjoy that 4K!
Amazing review James can’t wait to watch my blue velvet on 4K are you going to review Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid?.
Hello, Jason! Glad you enjoyed this review. Yes, I do plan to share thoughts on the Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid release as well. Lot of good stuff coming out this month for the sale!
I recently watched this film, and I believe that’s why this video was suggested to me! My first time watching your videos (thanks algorithm!) but I love your thoughts and how deep you go into the film and the release. Will absolutely be checking out more of your channel!
Thank you for your kind words, McKenzie and glad to hear you enjoy the content! Welcome to the channel and look forward to hearing your thoughts on films as well. Chilly Scenes of Winter was a nice discovery for me last year.
Getting ready to go to Maxxxine right now 🤙🏻 im glad youtube recommended your channel to me. You got a new subscriber for sure
Welcome to the channel, Nick! Glad you found it 😀. Hope you enjoyed MaXXXine.
@@20thand21stMovies absolutely did! Saw it with my girlfriend and one of our friends. Luckily we all like horror movies lol
I only have the studio release of Blue Velvet. I’ll pick up the 4K at some point. Blue Velvet is in my top 3 favorite movies list. It was the first Lynch movie I saw and I’ve been a huge fan ever since. I know you don’t talk about TV shows much but I’d love to hear your thoughts on Twin Peaks if you ever get around to watching it. Kyle MacLachlan’s character in it, special agent Dale Cooper, is so amazing and I think you would really enjoy it.
Yes, Blue Velvet is a good one for sure, Hunter, and one of my favorites from Lynch. I do need to check out the Twin Peaks tv series one of these days. Hopefully soon.
Well it’s worth the upgrade and of course I double dipped, superb picture on my new Reavon 4k player which has a nice multi region option as well so now don’t have use a separate player when I play the features. My other two fav Lynch films are The Elephant Man and Fire walk with me have to profess to being a Twin Peaks fan, but I do have all his other Criterion titles.
Hello, Steve! I need to get a region free player one of these days. I too love Lynch’s films and The Elephant Man is also high on my list from him along with Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway.
Exceedingly well done James, thank you. Yep, no double dip for me, I'll happily keep my blu-ray version, and reinforced since I purchased less than year ago. Totally agree that the picture quality of the blu-ray is excellent as is, what a great film.. Same story for my blu-ray of Blood Simple.
Glad you enjoyed the review, Pete! Yes, when it’s the same 4K restoration it’s usually not a big jump in picture quality. The blu-rays of Blue Velvet and Blood Simple hold up very nicely.
So if Criterion had used actual *blue velvet* on the slipcase, then I would have instantly gone for the double-dip!
It wouldn’t even need to be actual velvet. It could be that flock printing technique used on old greeting cards.
@@garyrichardson475 Sure, I'd settle for that!
Ha ha. Now that would be some inventive packaging 😀.
