Great review James. I bought this during the last sale. Cant wait to dig in. I’m so embarrassed on my box sets that I haven’t finished. Still finishing up my Varda, Berman, and Tati sets 😞. Great job

Glad you enjoyed the review, Travelin Man! No need to be embarrassed about not finishing those sets. Just enjoy when you can. I’ve got plenty of catching up to do in my collection as well (most collectors can say the same) 😀.

I've always been drawn to News From Home where it comes to Chantal Akerman's filmography. Not sure if it's that it was my first film of hers, or that the combination of the personal and the time capsule'esque images of a setting I'm familiar with hits me just right, either way it's captivating in my book. And for those who find her work slow, dull, or tedious, much like people say of Pink Floyd's, Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wizard Of Oz, try synching up Exile On Main Street, by the Rolling Stones to it for a different viewing experience. ;)

Henry, you have me curious about Exile on Main Street. I just looked up on Spotify and will give it a listen. Thanks!

I first learned about Chantal Akerman after the 2022 Sight and Sound poll. I've now watched Jeanne Dielman 3 times. I'm still not quite sure that it's worthy of the title "best movie of all time", but it's still a very good movie worthy of being in the conversation. As you pointed out in the video, the movie is interesting intended to feel more like a painting. This is a sentiment that's been expressed by a good number of renowned directors, but Jeanne Dielman takes this to it's logical extreme way better than any other movie I can think of, even including the works of Kubrick and Tarkovsky.

All the nerds who try to claim that "ackshually Jeanne Dielman is a bad movie because it doesn't give me enough dopamine" are just coping.

Hello, James! I agree with you that I wouldn’t put Dielman in the number one slot but the good thing is the ranking has given this film more attention than ever and a lot of people will be exposed to it as a result.

I am of the same thinking, it was literally the most boring thing I have ever seen, I have no issues with films that challenge and move me with a lengthy run time. Heck one of my favourites of all time is Celine And Julie Go Boating which runs the same length as Jeanne Dielmann, but a film where a character makes schnitzel for 7 straight minutes and sits on a sofa in the dark for almost 4 is praised to the ends of the earth. I am very reluctant to watch any of Akerman's other work because I fear it might be the same.

Hello, Raymond! I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on Jeanne Dielman. Jeanne Dielman is one of those films that generates a pretty healthy dialogue because of the varying viewpoints. I can appreciate what Akerman was going for in the film but can also appreciate that it is one of those films that definitely isn’t for everyone 😀.

@zakwan10 Jeanne Dielman sitting on the couch for 4 minutes is one of the most intense moments in cinema history. You just don't understand art.
