I love all the ones you mentioned! Persona on 4K would be amazing, and Portrait of a Lady on Fire. What a beautiful movie. Even though I recently purchased Portrait of a Lady on Fire on blu-ray, I would upgrade.

The more videos I see spotlighting lesser known criterion titles, I know if ever go to America during one of the sales, my whole suitcase will be full of criterion’s

I have a suspicion Criterion may do a big Kurosawa box set with 4K upgrades sometime down the line. 10 I'd like to see get 4K upgrades soon are your suggestions of Thief, Badlands, Sweet Smell of Success, On The Waterfront, The Graduate and Notorious and add to that 3 other Hitchcock flicks -- Rebecca, Spellbound, Foreign Correspondent, and also the film The Unbearable Lightness of Being.

We are definitely thinking the same on desired 4K upgrades, PDX! A Kurosawa 4K box set would be amazing to say the least.

Great selections James!! I heard On The Waterfront will receive a 4k upgrade this year but I believe it’s with another label. The Before Trilogy is showing in limited theatres nationwide in a new 4k scan. I’m pretty sure Criterion will upgrade to 4k soon.

On the Waterfront 4K would be nice for sure, and maybe getting it from another label would be cool if we got more supplements that are not on the Criterion edition.

Badlands is at the top of my list, as well. I would also definitely upgrade Rashomon and Barry Lyndon. My most-desired titles include Eraserhead, Mirror and Inside Llewyn Davis. I'm at peace with double-dipping to get the best possible version of my favorite films, so there are plenty of others I would purchase if they became available.

Rob, I like your adds of Mirror and Inside Llewyn Davis both excellent blu-ray editions. Would make great 4Ks.

I'd also like to see new movies in the Criterion collection come in as 4k, as wll as the upgrades. A few off the top of my head..... Master and Commander Sin City Gravity Dark City Excalibur There Will Be Blood Contact Maybe not all Criterion material, but I want them in 4k none the less.

I forgot about Nashville, good choice. I have the Paramount blu-ray and it looks great in that format already. Chose it over the Criterion because according to reviewers Paramount's version was a superior transfer. Bottom line is that the source elements in good shape and would do well in 4k, and this film with its outstanding locations and cinematography begs for a 4k.

It'd be great if Mishima gets a 4K. Just imagine The Golden Pavillion segment in 4K. Kagemusha and The Thin Red Line would be great as well, but they're Fox titles. Guess we'll see about those.

Although 4K upgrades are nice, I'm happier when Criterion puts out an OOP title (whether blu or 4K.) My top 5 titles that would be great for Criterion are: 1) Breaking Away (Peter Yates) 2) The Fury (DePalma) 3) Taxi Driver 4k 3) Born on the 4th of July 4) Not a Pretty Picture (Martha Coolidge's debut film that was restored and is being held by Janus films. Its mind-boggling they haven't released this yet!) Honorable mentions to: The Pope of Greenwich Village and Presumed Innocent

I agree. Such a good movie.

Our local film society tried to book PARIS, TEXAS for screening this summer but we were told that the film isn't available at this time due to a new 4K restoration currently in process. So I expect a brief theatrical tour on the art house circuit later this year, maybe in the fall, followed by a Criterion upgrade sometime in 2025.

@@20thand21stMovies I think it's a virtual certainty to get the 4K upgrade. It's a totally beloved film, essential canonical material at this point!

Not that I have any insights or anything into Criterion’s decisions, but I’d think that any of those titles that have an existing 4K scan (like Badlands) will almost definitely get an upgrade at some point, and I also think High and Low is a good candidate for a new scan and format upgrade.

I would agree that a good number of the releases with 4K scans have a chance of getting a 4K release at some point.

Wonderful 16 films you highlighted, totally enjoyed your commentary. The top of my Criterion 4k wish list is The Great Beauty. It's one of only two discs in my collection that I would double dip for, the other Barry Lyndon. Personally I rate The Great Beauty as one of 10 best movies of all time, that's how much I love it. I'm delighted you highlighted Revanche. It's sort of an under the radar release, just a great movie. I saw it on the Criterion Channel couple years ago and finally bought the blu-ray a few weeks ago, Again, terrific movie. The Graduate, oh yes, another top 10 movie for me. I don't own the blu-ray, but have seen it dozens of times over decades. Because of its age, keep thinking it may be due a 4k upgrade relatively soon, fingers crossed.

Great list. I was a skeptic. But once i upgraded to a true jvc 4k projector im all in on 4k. I like widescreen epics in the format the best.

Theo, you and me both are looking forward to a potential Kurosawa 4K box set. A lot of folks are hopeful for that.

I’m hoping for 4K upgrades of Rebecca, Notorious, and Spellbound (which never even got a Criterion blu-ray upgrade). I never bought the Criterion of Rebecca and Notorious because I already had the MGM releases of those films.

Tim, a Hitchcock 4K set of those three films would be awesome, or at least separate releases of those three films on 4K. I too have the MGM of the three films but got the Criterion blu-rays of Notorious and Rebecca. I guess I would be triple dipping if they got a 4K release but I know I would do it for those films 😀.

Personally, I don't think any need to be upgraded to 4K. But I am glad they are one to at least release some as 4K not with HDR.

Good point. Criterion does such a good job with their blu-rays from a picture quality standpoint that 4K isn't essential per se, but can be a nice upgrade in many cases if one wants to do so.
