Don't know where to start, this made my day James, I could comment reasons why in a very long post but will try to keep it reasonable:) First, McCabe 4k happens to be my most recent disc purchase from a few weeks ago and now you give us a most excellent and detailed and enjoyable review, all without spoilers...you do have a talent of walking that fine line. I just can't find a thing to disagree about as you nailed all the important aspects of this film. Spot on. I"d like to add that I thought Altman's commentary in extras was one of best ever coming from a director. About the unfinished town set, so interesting, As you know, the town structures were real buildings, not set facades, and the hired local carpenters actually lived in those structures for a time. The opening scene(s) where unfinished buildings were being worked on were the real carpenters doing real carpentry. The overall set design was best and most realistic ever for a western imo. Those muddy streets...talk about atmosphere! I thought a highlight of film was when the tall hired gun and sidekick arrived, and particularly when the big man has a meeting with McCabe and intimidates him so well that I could feel it the aprehension of McCabe. That tall guy was not a professional actor, but he nailed the part so well...Altman's commentary about how nervous the actor was during filming is a wonderful anecdote. I picked up the McCabe 4k on Amazon a few weeks ago for amazing $23! It was one of those rare non preannounced one/two day Amazon flash sales I guess. Other Altman films: You MUST watch Nashville; I know you will and feel confident you will absolutely love it. I have the non-Criterion blu-ray, Paramount I believe, and picked it because reviewers said it had the better transfer, but also said the Criterion supplements/extras superior. Shortcuts, did not like it, thought too disjointed. Love The Player, need to get blu-ray. Shampoo haven't seen in decades, eyeing the blu-ray. 3 Women, saw streamed last year, I liked it but not that much. Did say you must watch Nashville? Cheers James, Roll Tide and Go Dawgs.

Nashville is an absolute must see. Other films of his I like a lot are of course McCabe & Mrs. Miller (I also got the 4K upgrade), The Player, Shortcuts, Thieves Like Us, The Long Goodbye, and Cookie's Fortune. His worst, which is a surprisingly absolute clunker, is Popeye 😅

I haven't seen McCabe and Mrs. Miller in years. This 4K might be a good reason for me to revisit it. My favorite Altman movie is probably 3 Women but that's another movie I haven't seen in around 15 years or so. I've watched a couple solid westerns so far this year. Yellow Sky, directed by William Wellman and starring Gregory Peck, Anne Baxter and Richard Widmark, is excellent and has a blu ray release from Kino. I think you would enjoy it. Pretty dark western from the 40s. I also watched a spaghetti western starring Lee Van Cleef that I really enjoyed called The Big Gundown. It has an excellent Morricone soundtrack and I think Tarantino used a piece of the score for Inglourious Basterds or Kill Bill. I can't remember which. The Big Gundown has a release from Indicator which might mean it's coming out from Kino at some point. Enjoyed the review! Definitely pushed McCabe and Mrs. Miller up on my rewatch list.

I truly believe that the original DVD transfer of this film is one of the worst ever done! It looked absolutely horrible, but I’m so happy Criterion gave us such a huge upgrade with the Blu-ray and an even bigger upgrade with this 4K. Great video and great film!

Interesting. One of my favorite Altman films but wasn’t sure about upgrading from the 2016 Criterion blu-ray. Sounds like it’s worth it.
