    Maybe you could skewl me a bit. So here's what I knew as I watched along. There was no KV spike when you snapped the throttle. That much I knew. I can't decipher much else from ignition scope patterns, but I do know KV should rise with increase in compression. So as an amateur, can you tell me did you have any other way of knowing prior to disassembly that it was secondary and not primary? IE like had you ruled out a weak coil before diving in? I'm thinking about early 3V Fords where the coils were notorious for firing at idle and not firing under load. I do know you said this one was completely dead miss all the time so not quite the same as my example, but do you understand what I'm asking when I say how did you know it was not a weak coil and would be a secondary problem from the waveform?

    Another of topic question. Have you used the can bus decoder feature in the Pico scope for diagnostic purposes? Thank you in advance.

  • @CartersDiagnostics
    @CartersDiagnosticsАй бұрын

    I decode messages, just to see if they can be decoded without errors. I have no idea what the messages mean. I figure if the message integrity is good and the Picoscope software can decode it, that tells me the cars ECU 's should be able to decode them. And I should look elsewhere for my issues.

    Mate, I love your videos and I have learned a lot from you. As we all learn from eash other, though, I have ro point out that the Wideband Oxygen sensor readings are the opposite to what you stated in the video. Positive current (above the zero line) menas LEAN. Negative current means RICH. When the engine reved well and you pulled your leg off the accelerator pedal - the moment you call "injectors cut" actually causes the mixture to go RICH (not Lean). The injectors spray a predefined, fixed amount of fuel in this condition (fuel ECU does not look at the O2 readings then). The reason is to avoid mixture getting lean and causing "pops" on deacceleration.😊 As the throttle is fully closed at this moment, there is less air than normal and mixture is Rich. Hence the O2 sensor reading goes sharply negative (Rich) and stays there until engine load increases again and the Idle Valve opens to increase engine speed (to make it Idle). At the other moment, when you sharply pressed the acceliratior pedal, lots of Air entered the engine and the O2 sensor reading went up (Lean). The Fuel ECU compensated a moment later and the O2 reading went back to balanced. Hope that helps. Thank you so much for the effort in putting these videos together and sharing your knowledge.

  • @CartersDiagnostics

    Thank for the comment, very informative and yes we all learn from each other. I agree with your rich/lean statement regarding the polarity of change positive and negative. The amp clamp that I'm using is direction sensitive like all amp clamps. I simple oriented it to show positive rich and negative lean, it works better visually for me thats all. I was only interested in the speed or reaction time of the feedback system with this video and to practice a bit with my clamp. Thanks again for commenting and keeping me on my toes , great information you have posted.

    I don't remember using the scan tool on this, due to the main complaint of the battery going dead. The scope leads are shielded so I'm not sure about the wrapping technique. Great captures! Always happy to watch your stuff! I think it's ridiculous that the warranty people can't understand that these waveforms and test are more than enough proof. I captured a rod bearing noise on a clearly knocking and bad engine. They forced me to remove the pan and rod caps,sure enough i was correct. They still force me to disable the car completely so now it can't move under its own power! Why does that make sense to them???

  • @CartersDiagnostics

    Yeah there was talk of actual pan removal on this. I'm hoping the boroscope pics will save us. It also creates alot more down time for the customer and then the age old question of who pays for the rental usually not the warranty company.

    Hi. I have two questions. 25:34 Why do you show that the compression tower should be on the left side? It's not better to be further to the right, because the ignition is behind top dead center. How to determine accurate GMP without pico WPS? Thank you

  • @CartersDiagnostics
    @CartersDiagnostics2 ай бұрын

    It seems more normal to me for the ignition to fire BTDC, but with fuel control codes stored,( because of how I disabled the fuel for cranking test.) So who knows the ignition strategy, plus I have a leaning tower that is not giving the correct location of TDC and that throws off all measurements using the peak as a base line. What is GMP?

  • @ebolti22
    @ebolti222 ай бұрын

    @@CartersDiagnostics my English is poor. Here we call GMP the top position of the piston. How can I determine the exact top point of the piston when I do not have WPS?

  • @CartersDiagnostics
    @CartersDiagnostics2 ай бұрын

    You could put long screwdriver in the spark plug hole and crank the motor by hand until the screwdriver reaches it highest point. At that time its either Top dead center compression or Top dead center exhaust . Or if you have a scope and scan tool. You could sample the crank sensor and an ignition sync then read the commanded ignition timing on the scantool. Then Figure out how many degrees per toggle or transition of your crank sensor in 360 degrees of your crank rotation. You then could figure out where TDC will land on the crank sensor. So for example if your ignition timing is 10degrees BTDC then move to the right of your ignition sync how ever many transitions of your crank sensor would equal 10 degrees. That would theoretically TDC compression.

    Ok I’m confused. Agree a leaky valve produced a deep expansion pocket .. normally the expansion pocket vacuum shld be very close to the intake pull vacuum … in your case the expansion pocket is much higher (less vacuum) … if it was leaking on compression it wld have more vacuum wouldn’t it???

  • @CartersDiagnostics
    @CartersDiagnostics2 ай бұрын

    This engine does weird things with intake valve timing and valve lift cranking and idling. (I'm actually in talks with Nissan now to get some clarification my self.) So comparing exhaust pocket to intake pocket on the same wave it kinda breaks the rules a bit. Just notice the bad cylinder had 12in.hg exhaust pocket vs. good cylinder had less than half of that. This engine has exhaust vvt intake vvt and variable valve lift vvel so lots of stuff going on. I did not unplug anything so this is raw data. Hope that clears things up some.
