    Excellent instructional video - im just pulling my 051 starter apart to look at same issue. Needed to fall a large tree and no start engage - had to use my jonsered 60cc which was hard work - the 051 would have done it easily.

    Im at 10k asl... Should i do this to get it to run right up here or do i have to rejet?

  • @cobhc1986
    @cobhc198627 күн бұрын

    As far as I know, there is no way to rejet these carbs, you simply adjust the fuel/air mixture with the adjustment screws shown in the video. L screw controls mixture at idle and throttle response and the H screw is the high speed adjustment for wide open throttle. The CS400 does have a rev limited coil, so that makes tuning by ear at WOT a little more difficult because the rev limit sounds a lot like the “4 stroking” sound you would adjust to on a saw without rev limiter, so you want to tune for max power in the cut.

    The stiff plate on the reed assembly is to stop the reed from over extending.

    The filter would get sucked into the carb without that stop plate against the carb.

    The throttle linkage has two similar ends but they are not the same. The carb end is more concentric with its bend. The trigger end is more open on the end so it will slide in or out of the trigger hole.

    i know this is 6yrs ago. but did the oil tank still leak after assembly? i went through the same thing to change the line. and no gasket on the tank, well as i was cleaning the surfaces on the tank and case there was fine clear film, and i started to clean it off and then realized after a part of it scraped off, that it was supposed to be there, anyway, forgot how i fixed that it ,went back to work for a few year. maybe 10 but it started leaking lots of oil, now i got it apart again, i think i'm gonna change the clutch bearing if i can find one. thanks, cool video.

    Yes, I did have problems with it leaking with Motoseal. I finally solved the problem by using Dirko HT sealant, the same kind that Stihl uses, it’s a little thicker than Motoseal.

    I have a 445 and have been trying to locate that carb adjustment tool. Everywhere I look it says "No longer available". The spec on the tool is 5mm 20 tooth....I can find 5mm 21 tooth...but not 20. Is it really a 20 tooth ?

  • @cobhc1986
    @cobhc19863 ай бұрын

    Honestly I’ve never counted the teeth, it’s just the “splined” adjustment tool and can be bought individually or with a set that has tools that fit other carbs too. You can find them as a no name, Chinese set on eBay or Amazon. The same splined tool also fits many Poulan products.

    Just what i was looking for thank you sir.i think i might put a small washer in place of the limiter, then the spring ,one question for you i pulled my muffler off my 455, the gasket was between the muffler and the aluminum shield, the shield was right up against the port ,is this normal? The saw is brand new ,i questioned my self ,but you can clearly see the impression up against the aluminum proving the way i pulled it off . The saw is mine from new . So nobody's had the exhaust off . Thank you for the video.

    Recently put a new carb on my 445. New fuel filter and new plug. Ran great for a little while. For some reason now It won’t throttle. I give it fuel, it just do3/!5 want to go. Swap to old carb and same thing. New gaskets. Any idea what this could be?

    Make sure the short piece of fuel line that goes from the carb to the primer bulb isn’t touching a bolt on the back of the cylinder. That happened with mine and it melted a hole in the line

    It is insane that they designed a system that required removal of over a dozen thingies just to get to the oil line, which they knew would degrade with time and need replacement. That said, pretty much every McCullogh chain saw I have worked on, if the fuel line hoses are dry rotted, so too is the oil pump hose.

    So how did you get the carburetor to stop leaking?

  • @cobhc1986
    @cobhc1986 Жыл бұрын

    Just carefully tightened the screw holding the pump side cover a little more and continued assembling. I believe the problem here was just that the gasket was new and dry. Once some fuel gets to the carb, the gasket will swell slightly and seal it up. If it had been difficult to tune or wouldn’t run properly after assembly, then I would know that something was still leaking and I’d have to go back into it to investigate

    I have a PM 650J (I do not know what is the differences between 650 model...) from my father. I think it was bought in 1980 here in Spain. I have started the engine, but some adjustment to do because because pretty hard to start, when started revs perfectly, but if stops for some reason very hard again to star (probably some issue with fuel or carburetor operation...). When a turn side the chainsaw engine also stops... I have replace fule line from gas tank to carburetor but.... ... Your video is a great help for me, i order to clean an check if oil line for saw is out of order or not. thanks.

    These saws have a manual and automatic oiler, the auto oiler works by a diaphragm pump that works by impulse from the crankcase. It’s possible that the diaphragm has become stiff. The auto oiler doesn’t work on mine either, I just use the manual pump

    Great video and very informative. But I am having a problem with the throttle. I feel like I put everything back together right. But when I go to throttle, it won't open up. It seems like the throttle cable is too long. I know that's not the case, but I'm lost

  • @cobhc1986
    @cobhc1986 Жыл бұрын

    The conduit that the cable goes through should be held by a little black plastic piece that keeps it from moving. If the cable and conduit popped out of its holder during disassembly or reassembly, that could be the problem. I suggest re-watching the video and pause it on the closeup of the throttle cable then compare it to yours. Is it actually not opening the throttle far enough or is it just running like the throttle isn’t going all the way?

    Thank you for this and the nice closeups. Acquired a nice 445 with start/run problems. Seems like getting excessive air. Noticed that previous tampering had put the plastic screws in the bottom intake to cylinder holes...not even bottemed out. I was sure that was the problem....nope. has to be the carburetor. My anxiety that evening was too much to tackle the "tentacles" of frustrations. But, with your video....whew, I've calmed down now. After getting several 55's running good I thought the 445 would be a "cinch". 1-question: does the front of the carburetor take a gasket....this one does not have one. -thanks, Tom

  • @cobhc1986
    @cobhc1986 Жыл бұрын

    I don’t remember there being a gasket. Also a little tip, make sure that the line going from the carb to the primer bulb is not touching one of the screws that holds the intake to the cylinder. I’ve accidentally made that line too long before, was touching the screw and melted a hole in the line. Also, if someone tampered with the intake and put the wrong screws in, you may want to remove the intake and inspect the intake to cylinder gasket.
