Excellent instructional video - im just pulling my 051 starter apart to look at same issue. Needed to fall a large tree and no start engage - had to use my jonsered 60cc which was hard work - the 051 would have done it easily.

Fascinating stuff Chris. Beautiful machine. Hope you can get the parts and get it going. Love to see old noble saws being brought back to usefulness. I appreciate the dedication and doggedness that it takes to get it done. Wish I had the patience.

I had the same problem with the starter pawl not catching/engaging the cup on my Stihl 051. Added some grease to the friction washers and it worked like magic. The grease allows the washers to maintain inward pressure while simultaneously allowing the pawl to engage the cup when the pull string is pulled.

There are several things you can do to a Fairbanks Morse recoil such as sharpen the tips of the pawls so they will dig in and roughing up the cup with sandpaper helps to you have to snatch the rope by design at least in my experience because it has to dig in to the cup also where it wore down the cup and it's smooth that is natural wear on the cup from years of slipping and grabbing it will slip a little bit before it grabs

I had rope brake decided to pull it all apart go over everything when I put it back together it wouldn’t engage so I flipped the Pawls over way it went not sure if it will help you or not

I cant help but think you should have been able to flip the old pawls around to use the opposite edges.

Hi Chris, where did you get the anti- vibration mounts for that saw? I have my 051 up and running but the mounts are shot,

Hi Richie, I haven't gotten around to getting the mounts yet. When i do look for parts like that I usually check eBay, but if I have no luck there I'll ask around on chainsaw forums or groups on Facebook.

I thought there was a plastic insert that went inside the starter cup...no??
