You think you know ambition? Hardship? Obsession? If you do, you probably ain't seen Herzog's Fitzcarraldo. Join Matt and Craig as they watch, riff and discuss this cinematic exploration into jungle madness. In 'Seen It' we reflect on Oldboy, Goonies, Westworld and more.
All film footage is used in accordance with fair use according to US copyright law. All music in the show is used with full permission of the composer.
Thanks for all the great comments. Keep em coming! If you watch one of the movies we discuss, let us know what you thought of it.
Welcome To The Basement" is a show about watching, discussing and having fun with movies. Matt choses the movie and Craig doesn't know what it is until the cameras start rolling, so none of the discussion or riffing is planned ahead of time.
Movie announced on facebook before every new episode. Get the movie and follow along.

The thing I found most interesting about this movie was the dragging the boat over the hill...I was so interested I got the DVD that goes into great detail about how they actually drug the boat over the hill...amazing! Everyone should see 1956 Forbidden Planet with Walter Pidgeon, a young and serious Leslie Nielson, and a very hot Anne Francis...they got away with quite a bit for 1956. I assume a couple of sharp folks like you have seen it, but I am sure many of the commenters haven't.

I would humbly suggest The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. I remember reading ads for the movie in Marvel comic books when I was growing up, and never managed to persuade anyone to go and see it. When I was older, I was stunned at the madness of the entire production - and I hope you will be as well. ...but you've probably Seen It!

Also Smilla's Sense Of Snow.(1997) Mysery/Suspense story surrounding the death of a young boy who fell from a roof. A neighbor believes it was murder since the boy was afraid of heights. Also, nice episode. I haven't seen Fitzcarraldo but I saw the documentary (Burden Of Dreams) which was very inspiring to watch.

Seen It: Ravenous? 1999 - Guy Pearce and Robert Carlyle. To me this is more than a story about cannibalism. It is an epic morality tale. I saw this late at night on cinemax a long time ago and after the opening scene I was totally hooked. To me this was a very original film so I really enjoyed it. Has a small cult following but did not do well overall. I try to get all my friends to watch it. Nobody has liked it yet.

I really hope this suggestion makes the "Seen it!" segment. A multi gengre film starring Christopher Lee, Edward Woodward and Britt Ekland. Directed by Robin Hardy, it is a horror/mystery/crime/musical-movie sprinkled with realistic depictions of ancient pagan practices. I am of course talking about the british classic The Wicker Man (1973). Afterwards you could watch the version from 2006 with Nicholas Cage (Step away from the bike!) for a prime example of how not to do a remake.
