Come join us as we look back on Welcome To The Basement's second year. We watch "The Great Train Robbery" and "The Red Balloon", we induct new members into our hall of fame, retire our old notebooks, issue New Year's resolution challenges to each other, and there's even a poem! An end of the year blowout that's not to be missed.
In Seen It, we discuss dead men, glorious paths and what many consider the greatest film ever made.
All film footage is used in accordance with fair use and US copyright law. All music in the show is used with full permission of the composer.
Thanks for all the great comments. Keep em coming! If you watch one of the movies we discuss, let us know what you thought of it.
Welcome To The Basement" is a show about watching, discussing and having fun with movies. Matt choses the movie and Craig doesn't know what it is until the cameras start rolling, so none of the discussion or riffing is planned ahead of time.
Movie announced on facebook before every new episode. Get the movie and follow along. We do discuss the entire movie, including the ending, so if you want to avoid spoilers, watch the movie first.

Ha ha ha!
Craig was sad and confused, so he lashed out against the balloon like all the bad children did.
Love - Forever Changes in the background. FANTASTIC!!!
The opening narration of Tombstone also ends with an homage to the final shot in The Great Train Robbery.
Tona kiss! I weep with delight! 😁😘
The mere utterance of "My name is Stu" cracks me the hell up.
Matt, you put the greatest albums up in the background. Love!
This was an amazing episode. What a way to end the season, guys. Stu has to be one of the best running gags ever. Thanks for all your hard work and all of the fun.
I like the Magnificent Seven poster, due to the quote "They were seven... they fought like seven hundred!" Because if you read with modern day nomenclature, it sounds like a teenager unsure of how many people they fought. "They fought, like, seven hundred!"
That entire "Nell" sequence had me cackling with laughter when I first saw it.
I must say, I'm not sure whether this would count as a human or concept, but I do feel I have to express some level of disappointment that The Landlord's Daughter was not inducted to the Hall of Fame. That being said, this was a wonderful episode, as always, and I consider finding the show one of my highlights of 2013. Here's to a wonderful and prosperous Season 3!
I wish I could drive a car made out of dancin'. XD
Yeah, Avatar was just "Pocahontas on Mars".

I just noticed the Love - Forever Changes album on your dresser, that just might be my favorite album of all time. Love - Your Mind and We Belong Together (Bonus Track)
Forever Changes! one of the best records of all-time
I don't know if I've said it before, but 2:43 - 2:56 remains my favorite moment in the entire series so far.
Have you seen Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog? It's movie enough and the best thing to come out of the writer's strike.
I really enjoy this show. We get to see Matt's sensitive, intelligent side and Craig's cool intellect. This show has brought me hours of laughter and a newfound love of cinema. It will be difficult, waiting a whole month, but I will carry on in the name of Blamesociety. Good job and good time guys. I'll see ya next month!
I actually loved the Red Balloon. To me, it was about the individual spirit, intellect and inspiration of the higher mind. Another great season! Way to go :)
I absolutely love this show guys. You two have opened my eyes to the wonders of cinema and now, I never want to close them! Don't ever stop this show!!
The Great Train Robbery is obviously dated, but it really was revolutionary in how much it introduced. It invented the tracking shot by moving a camera, it invented cuts to tell a story across multiple locations, and the man shooting at the end was sometimes placed at the beginning of the story at the theater's request--changing the meaning of the film (at the beginning, it's easier to see him as a bandit threatening the train, and at the end, it is easier to see him as a sheriff saying "You better watch out bandits, or else you're next", since they died at the end). Anyway, I thought I'd mention those things because most of what makes it interesting is contextual stuff rather than the actual story.
A great addition as always, Matt and Craig. Can't wait for another year with you guys!
What a poem! Favorite show on youtube by far! Thank you so much.
Welcome to the Basement hasn't been showing up in my feed. On the one hand, that sucks. On the other hand, I always stumble upon it when I'm bored and suddenly have something entertaining to watch!
Hey Matt and Craig, I discovered your show a few months ago and instantly fell in love with the program. I caught a handful of episodes from your latest season and recently decided to work my way through the entire Welcome to the Basement catalog from the very beginning. Thank you so much for sharing your love of film and hilarious humor with us fellow cinema lovers. You've introduced me to so many new movies already and I can't wait to immediately jump in to season 3 in a few minutes. Happy belated Christmas and new year and a giant thumb kiss to you both!
I've seen the red balloon dozens of times, in school, and interestingly on Nickelodeon when they had slots to fill they would show the film in a series of shortened blocks. It's still a wonderful film.
This episode, and the show as a whole, was a joy to watch. Good job, and keep it up!
All of this IS gold.
That's amazing! I just learned a little more about one of my favorite films, Tombstone! There were a couple of shots from "The Great Train Robbery" that were in the "news reel" footage that served as the prologue in the movie. It's so cool to see a little nugget like that!
Thanks for providing such excellent entertainment this year! Best of the new year to you both...
Another fantastic year guys, you should be very proud. Good luck for the coming year, long may it continue
Great show, guys! Look forward to the new season.
Loving the 'LOVE' Record in the background!
what a great retrospective, thank you for all your hard work this year! :)
I was curious. Do you ever feel like watching these movies with each other, a camera, and the subtle pressure to make some funny comments has an effect on your opinions on these films?
They forced us to watch The Red Balloon in music class in like the third grade. I remember that class, it was a good nap.
Love the Love album in the background! You have an awesome music collection.
Finally! More films!
Fun fact: The Great Train Robbery is available in its entirety as the main page "image" on Wikipedia. I find that really cool!
wow, I watching since the beginning and showed it to a lot of mij friends, they al love the show,I can't wait the see more years of great film viewing , I tumb kiss you both, Math and Craig keep on Rocking in de Movie World! Thanks for great entertainment !
Feb 7th can't come quick enough. If there was a way to adequately display a Megaforce thumb kiss through KZread comments I would. Just know, Matt and Craig, that there's one coming through my monitor screen right now. Here's to 2013 in the basement, and many more years to come!
My husband recently made me watch Amelie, a french movie. It was great! A cute little comedy that, of course, has a message.
Watch the Fall! Such a stunning movie so littered with beauty and excellent writing.
Another great year and thank you, gentlemen! (Oh, and yes, old Orson Welles in CK is scary. Loved that movie but I was always dragging by the third act)
I had to watch "The Red Balloon" when I was in 1st grade too. It made me forever have a love/hate relationship with balloons. Whenever I got one, and it flew away, I would cry. I loved getting them, but always knew they would never last, and the sadness would return. Why put that on a 6 year old? This was public school too.
Finally! I never new what that last scene in Good Fellas was about!
I introduced my brother to this show recently and we power watched all of Season 1 on an off day. During our viewing of Season 2 I noticed that you had responded to my question concerning The Adventures of Baron Munchausen! I'm glad you two loved it as much as I do. Now for a request! Have you seen Amir Shervan's Samurai Cop? If not, you're letting this gem of lovable terribad slip through your fingers. Please give it a shot on the old leather couch.
Another great video guys. I like the idea of daily meditation to this film!
Yay, you guys actually did Dead Man for Seen It. I was wondering if you hadn't... seen it, and it was just put in your "maybe see sometime" list. Glad you guys (or Craig at least) agrees is a movie that should be seen. By the way, Craig, you didn't pronounce my name right, but it's okay. :P
you should watch graveyard of the fire flies. Its a beautiful, tragic movie that you will both love, even if its a tearjerker you two are great thanks for everything
The poem is SO GREAT! Thank you both. #2014inthebasement
Somehow I missed this when it 1st came out; I too had to watch The Red Balloon in elementary school.
I was forced to watch The Red Balloon in the early grades, too! It always bugged me. I remember thinking how cruel life was, which is pretty deep thinking for a first grader to have to do. Oh, and my wife got a big smile on her face when you mentioned Craig's consumption. She digs that consumptive poet he rocks, as well as the beard.
Beautiful words Matt, beautiful word...
Hi guys, awesome way to round out the year. I love the show and look forward to a brand new year of movies on the old leather couch. Speaking of which, have you guys seen Yorgos Lanthimos' Dogtooth? Its an interesting Greek film and well worth looking for. Best of luck in the new year.
Christmas Eve I had a massive heart attack so now I'm catching up! Love this show :)
I think 'The Red Balloon' got some nice involvement with recent films, like UP. Especially the final scene with the kid flying away.
great show!
Loved this episode. I feel like Udo Kier was the only one who had a funny reason to be in the Hall of Fame, just like "American's Caveman" Ron Perlman last year.
Poor kid. Taking him away is how the balloons reproduce. When the kid starves to death after being taken away, he turns into a balloon that has to spend eternity in Paris.
you guys should hold a raffle for the notepads, i'm sure there's loads of fans who'd fancy a chance to get one
Welcome to the Basement: It's better than Vertigo.
This is a really good show
Thanks for the birthday episode! I know you guys planned it out that way. Seen it? Stranger Than Fiction. One of the few flicks oriented towards women I actually find enjoyable!
I really love your show, every episode is very fun to watch. I too have seenThe great Train Robbery for my Film history college, nice to see you also enjoyed it. I was wondering if you guys ever seen any belgian films, I'm from Belgium myself and would love to see you guys, discussing one of our national products. Maybe you should start with The broken circle breakdown, it was a very great hit in our country last year! From Belgium with love! P.S. It's really fun to hear you speak French.
Happy (late) New Year!
been watching (and in some cases re-watching) welcome to the basement and wanted to say thanks for doing this awesome show it's very cool i also want to give you a shout out because I think i'm.... i'm going "borrowing" the idea of the hall of fame for my own channel (i discuss characters basically) and i started a new thing with the wall of fame for influential characters in my story (i put their picture on the wall) and i'm attributing that to you, so thank you for that wonderful idea, keep up the good work
Forever Changes, nice!
Great episode, but I'm sad I have to wait a month for the next one. Also, I'm surprised Ryan O'Neal wasn't an inductee. Looking forward to season three :)
good stuff
God I love this show
Matt's hair is really damn good. I wish I had hair like that.
Nice Forever Changes in the background there.
Hmm. What ABOUUUUUUUUT (emphasis on the "out") a Canadian movie special? Matt, Craig, have you seen: The Decline of the American Empire? The Barbarian Invasions? Bon cop, Bad cop? Love your show alot, keep the good work, guise!
finally you guys get around to the red balloon. lol.
Plot twist! That was Craig in a blonde wig kissing Matt.
Have you guys seen Michael Shannon's portrayal of Richard Kuklinski in The Iceman? I friggin loved it ;)
Great episode! Half an hour! Thanks. When we watched Red Balloon in school, the teacher/nun asked us, "Who do you think the Balloon represents?" I put up my hand and said, "Mary Poppins!"; they said, "No, Jesus." But I was aware there was an allegory going on. And I don't think I was far off; maybe MP was partly an allegory for JC (I'll know more after seeing Saving Mr. Banks.
Have you guys seen Joss Weadon's adaptation of Much about Nothing? It came out last year. I drove nearly 2 hours to see it. TOTALLY work it
I have been forced to watch the English red balloon in school so many times
Bros before loons.
I would have preferred an End of the Year Welcome to the Basement Moviepalooza.
I'm not sure if you guys realised this or not, but the storyline for Avatar is similar to the movie Pocahontas. It gave a futuristic, sci-fy style to a historic story. It's a good movie in my book.
You should watch Survive Style 5+, one of my favorite movies. I would love to see you delve into the world of Japanese movies, which of course includes the works of the late Kurosawa.
Matt, there's got to be some '80s teen angst flick you missed. That would be fun.
Hey guys. Love the show; never miss an episode. I was just wondering what type of camera you shoot with? I really like the look of the show overall.
Speaking of French films have you seen 1955's Les Diaboliques directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot. I was introduced to this film after seeing the American version..I really preferred the original.
I guess when Matrick P. Sloan digs deep it sounds an awful lot like Mad Libs.
hahaa I really enjoyed that :)
Challenge for 2014 - "documentaries"...boring you say? Well give it a try and you'll see. I suggest Frieder Wagner's "Deadly Dust", Holger Strohm's "Quietly into disaster" and Frank Höfer's "Warpromises". All of them took great efforts to do these movies. 1st got fired from his job after 30 years for doing this movie. 2nd had to leave his country because of serious death threats and the 3rd one got sick of working for telling lies on TV so he made his own film production company.
True Bromance! More Stu in 2014
My question on "self-indulgence" is this: would you still think All That Jazz is self-indulgent if you didn't know that it was autobiographical in nature?
I hope you guys delve into the weird and watch The Holy Mountain or Santa Sangre by Alejandro Jodorowsky!
I had to see The Red Balloon in kindergarten. That was absolutely traumatizing to me as a 5 year old. I remember thinking, "this is how kids are"? I think it may have given me a lifelong hatred of children.
Don't worry Craig, I haven't seen The Deer Hunter either. :(
I really think you guys should watch Miss Tootsie this year.
In “The Red Balloon “ if the boy had let the balloon go off with the blue balloon it would still be alive!
the lighting is different in the reflection bit at the start from previous episodes - thats how much i watch this show haha, a good one for valentines day would be the film valentines day, i remember seeing it when i came out with my girlfriend at the time, haven't had one since obviously, however if you guys dont fancy this would like to know what you thought of the iconic film Grease. I'm pretty sure you've both seen it being the dapping film junkies you are! heres to 2014! for welcome to the basement.
One word; Taxidermia!
What IS that "laundry de piece of cleta" thing Matt keeps saying?? Where is it from, what does it mean?
