"Are you for surreal?" This movie sure is. Opinions on this freaky 60s satire vary, as Craig and Matt tackle Putney Swope. In Seen It, we discuss Irish soul groups, Thai warriors, and death at funerals.
All film footage is used in accordance with fair use and US copyright law. All music in the show is used with full permission of the composer.
Thanks for all the great comments. Keep em coming! If you watch one of the movies we discuss, let us know what you thought of it.
Welcome To The Basement" is a show about watching, discussing and having fun with movies. Matt choses the movie and Craig doesn't know what it is until the cameras start rolling, so none of the discussion or riffing is planned ahead of time.
Movie announced on facebook before every new episode. Get the movie and follow along.

It's a cabinet my wife painted. The trees are people. Some of them are naked. She painted it sometime in the mid 90s.

A depressingly bad movie, huh? Better talk about the cabinet.
I forget how enjoyable these older episodes are to watch. i might have to start working my way through these again. I knew matt had lost weight, but i didnt realise just how much, holy hell sloany boy, great work.

Agreed. I haven't seen these in years, I came back to this one because I suddenly remembered the term Putney swope panic. 😂
I feel like Andre3000 watched this movie and was like "Yes. This is how I want to build my music career."
I think I had a stroke trying to understand how Peter Jackson went from Meet the Feebles to Lord of the Rings. I just keep repeating "I don't...I don't. How?"
I love the chemistry between you guys. And the fact that I learn new movie trivia and movie terms. You are proficient in explaining how you feel about the movies and I have a fun time watching you.
Welcome to the Basement has quickly become one of my favorite shows online. I love you guys.
I'll be honest, I wasn't too sure about this series when you first started it. But now...It is BY FAR one of my favorite things on KZread. You have such great chemistry together. Keep up the awesome work guys!
I love how you guys reply to fans so often. You're very considerate. :)
I've been excited all day for this!!! My favorite series on youtube!!!
Another entertaining episode. Well done! Love your laughter, Matt :D
I've been waiting for this since you started plugging it on Facebook. I love watching this series sooooooo much!
I hope this series goes on forever. Love the chemistry between you 2.
I have commented on every episode. Still no mention. This is officially my favourite KZread show. I have been a fan of Blame Society since the Channel 101 submission days. Anyways. Please watch or review in Seen it: Sam Peckinpah's - "Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia!" or Andrew Dominik's - "Chopper" one of Eric Bana's best performances, and also opens the flood gates on great Australian cinema that has been happening for the last 10-12 years, and flying under our North American radars.
Thank you so much guys! You made my day!!!
You guys are awesome. I'm glad you chose Craig to co-host this show. He's a coolass badass!
Thanks. I love the show and have discovered many good movies through you guys, especially Blow Out.
8:06 is quite possibly the best screen writing I have ever heard XD
I saw this episode a while back and watched the movie just yesterday. I was prepared for its trippiness, so I could just relax and enjoy the crazy ride. It's actually quite enjoyable that way.
Holy shit. 8:14 is the funniest thing I've ever seen.

minion0metal yes, excellent, but you skipped 8:06 "i feel like an oreo cookie" "you look like a pile of shit" I must have replayed that a good 15 or 20 times

That whole sequence is golden!
Man I just love Welcome to the basement. This is actually what I would have wanted in a true TV show. How? Well first you would talk, as normal. then when your selves are about to watch the movie, the true movie starts, then at the end returns to you two talking about it. I would deffedently not miss one episode of "Welcome to the basement" with you two on TV ^^
One thing I realized when watching, was how it worked in it's chronological context. My favorite movie of all time is Kentucky Fried Movie, and that wouldn't have been possible without Putney Swope. I think Hollywood Shuffle owes a lot to PS also. As unworkable PS is as a movie, it is a triumph of influence and representation. And Huggie Bear was fantastic. Great work guys - keep it up.
Mine too. Can't watch it just once and with each re-watching you begin to personally feel the effects of time travel as you realize all that you missed the previous time.
I hate to sound like a scolding teacher but, Dennis Weaver played the main Sidekick in almost 300 episodes of Gunsmoke. He was also the lead actor in something like 45 episodes of McCloud during it's 7 seasons. Each episode was like a TV movie that ran from 60 to 90 minutes and up two hours long. If anything, Weaver is probably remembered most for those two TV series, even though he had dozens of credits in Westerns and good TV movies like Duel.
Thanks for teaching me so many big words..
Great job as usual guys! Have you ever seen: Castaway on the Moon...?
Have you seen Four Lions (2010)? I genuinely believe it be one of the most nuanced, powerful pieces of satire EVER.
I panicked a little and couldn't imagine watching anymore of that film than what has been shown in this episode - OMG!!! :O
I had to go download this movie just because of this Welcome To The Basement.
Love this show! I wanted to suggest the film I proudly call my favorite, Princess Mononoke. Hoping you haven't seen it but if you have I have a back-up hope that you want to talk about seeing it. It really is the top of animated story telling.
Have you seen "Let the right one in (Låt den rätte komma in)"? Certainly one of the best horror movies of recent memory and in my opinion one of the best vampire movies ever made.
you guys are top dollar
If you haven't seen it you should definitely watch The Holy Mountain. That movoe changed my life... For better and for worse...
Great vid
Nothing but love for this series. Have you seen Hobo with a Shotgun?
You guys are hilarious-I haven't seen this movie in at least 25 years and I could've sworn Arthur Godfrey was the star.I gotta start taking Ginko Baloba.
Welcome to the basement, beer and boardgames, best shows to watch on youtube!
Love it if you tried "White Heat" with James Cagney. The advanced policework at the time is worth the effort.
Im loving this show, i shall recomend one :D from my oldie favorites, old mexican movie called " El esqueleto de la señora Morales" from 1960, i dunno iftheres a subtitle one but its in Spanish and its a very fun/creepy movie. Recomend It if Youve Seen it :D again great job just love your vids!
I know it's after Halloween, but you guys talking about Alan Tudyk got me thinking - have you seen Tucker and Dale vs Evil? It's one of those "sit on the couch with some buddies and drink a couple of beers" type movies. I loved it. Made me laugh, fun parody of slasher flicks
"Bear And Board Games"... Now THAT'S a show I'd like to see
Die Welle. A great movie, btw love your show.
The viewer comment destroying Craig's Top 5 was hilarious and totally on point.
I'll make one last plea for you guys to watch John Carpenter's early effort, the dark comedy 'Dark Star'. By no means a perfect film, but one with a lot of charm and character if taken with a pinch of salt. Loving the show guys, always a good watch.
Yes! Craig's hair looks so good! *Swoon*
Tropic thunder with the commentary
My favourite movie from when I was a kid.
Meet the Feebles is fucking awesome. I would kill for Jackson to do a sequel.
I'm going to keep asking until I get a response: What's the story behind that cabinet with the naked indian dudes in the vines? You can't see it in this episode, but it's visible in the background in several previous shows.
i also hate meet the feebles.. creeps the shit out of me.... love your show guys hope to see more next year.. greetings from germany
i watch this show becase you guys are so funny and you guys knows what makes a good movie. have you see ip man
Peter Dinklage wasn't the only one to play the same role in the movie and it's remake. Clark Gable played the same lead freaking role in Red Dust and it's remake "Mogambo" 20 years later. Now that's a man.
Have you seen the 2007 film The Living Wake ? It is my favorite comedy and is the story of the eccentric K. Roth Binew as he knowingly goes through his final day of life. It stars Mike O'Connell Binew and Jesse Eisenberg as his boy. It transcends most dark comedy by never stooping to vulgarity for a laugh. Its humor is often subtle, random ,and extremely emotional at the same time.
We still love you. ^^
I'd recommend watching the 1966 British film "It Happened Here". Interesting "Red Dawn"-esque alternate history setting, without the gung-ho "'MURICA, FUCK YEAH!" attitude. Great film for history buffs, or anyone in the mood for a look into British post-war cinema. Interesting side-notes: Stanley Kubrick donated film stock from Dr. Strangelove in order to help finish the film; and the film's cinematographer, Peter Suschitzky, later went on to work on Rocky Horror and Empire Strieks Back.
I love violence too Matt! I'm gonna have to see this movie now; it looks too funny. I've a movie suggestion; ever seen Das Boot? It's best in the original german but not bad dubbed to english
I'd really enjoy seeing you guys review a martial arts film. Perhaps one of the Spirited Killer movies?
I know you guys hate Meet the Feebles but what are your opinions of Peter Jackson's other early films like Bad Taste or Braindead?
hi guy's just wanted to say love welcome to the basement and i have watched every video you have reviewed and enjoyed all of them apart from scanners ,anywho i was wondering if you guys have seen the original black and white version f the night of the living dead in my mind it is still the best zombie film evermade
Wait a minute... I'm Darth Sladus! Thanks Matt!
You two are adding an exorbitant amount of video toy must see list which I'm trying to decide if I should thank you or curse you. Anyway I wanted to throw you a suggestion. "I sell the dead" with Dominic Monaghan and Ron Perlman. I saw it here in traverse city during our film festival and it would be a great film for you two to comment on. Love your commentary after the film. Need more of that smart humor on KZread. Sick of watching frat kids kick each other in the crotch.
8:06 never laughed so hard in my life. fucking brilliant.
Have you seen the Tim Robbins film "Cradle Will Rock"? It wasn't widely seen or well received, but it's still one of my favorite movies.
Oh snap, you read my comment! :O
hey Matt, you should check out Lee Moses. he was a great deep soul singer and i'm sure you'd like his Time And Place album.
I love to hear you guys chew on a movie.
I can recommend Roy Andersson's "Songs from the second floor" or if you guys are up for some mindblowing drama, you should watch Tommy Wiseau's "the room". Thanks for a great show - Alexander from Sweden
Would like to hear you're thoughts on "Sideways" if you have not seen it ofcourse
I'm glad you guys watch some of these movies so we don't have to lol. This seemed horrendous.
Have you guys seen Primer? It is a science fiction film dealing with the morality of time travel and was made on a $7000 budget. It is one of my all time favorite science fiction films.
I know DENNIS WEAVER from McCLOUD .. the CROCODILE DUNDEE of NEW MEXICO.. RIDING his HORSE in NEW YORK INSTEAD of riding in COP CAR.. "McCloud is an American police drama television series created by Herman Miller, that aired on NBC from September 16, 1970, to April 17, 1977. The series starred Dennis Weaver, and for six of its seven years as part of the NBC Mystery Movie rotating wheel series that was produced for the network by Universal Television. The show was centered on Deputy Marshal Sam McCloud of the small western town of Taos, New Mexico, who was on loan to the metropolitan New York City Police Department (NYPD) as a special investigator." - from wikipedia.
Have you seen the 1989 film Glory? It is one of my all time favorites!
Have you seen the art house film Gummo by any chance?
Fall isn't over yet. Winter doesn't start until December 21st.
The story was actually titled "Flowers for Algernon". Both were great.
There are three movies you've probably already seen that would be hilarious for you to watch. They are: Mothra, Splinter (which was so scary that I threw all the bark dust in my house away and cried), and the classic Buster Keaton film, The Playhouse. Tell Aron there is a small cult in the Pacific Northwest that watch everything he uploads manically.
yes
Loved Duel I thought it was a funny ending that intense music X'D
1:29 - Sorry - HAHA!!! :)
I recommend the 1991 movie Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky. It is truly a masterpiece of the ages and if you haven't seen it, you will surely love it.
I get the feeling you've been peeking at our facebook page
Seen "The gods must be crazy"? In my opinion it is a must see. It is a really unique movie
Hey guys, still loving the show. I saw The Dictator in cinemas with my former boss. Quite disgusting, we cringed throughout and sunk into our seats in embarrassment despite being hidden in the darkness...but overall, I never had high hopes and I enjoyed it for what it was. For Scene it, I have three Australian films to suggest to you; 2011's "Red Dog", "Look Both Ways" with William Mcginnis and "Malcolm" starring Colin Friels.
I came here having searched for PUTNEY SWOPE on youtube having just watched ROBERT DOWNEY JR's DOCUMENTARY on NETFLIX called 'SR' as in DOWNEY SENIOR .. really interesting documentary.. and did you know that DOWNEY wasn't his original name .. he changed it to join the army underaged?!?!
Have you guys seen "The Raid: Redemption"? Which is the best action film ever made?
Hey guys, love the show! I don't think anyone has asked you if you have seen any Hispanic films... if you don't mind reading subtitles, I can recommend a few, like "Y tu mama tambien" with Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal, or "Paraiso Travel" a Colombian movie about moving to the US with no papers. Also, have you seen "Maria full of grace"? its also a Colombian movie. Reviewing any of these movies would be pretty sweet
Thought about these long and hard.. Can't remember if the first one has been on seen it but here it goes... Four Rooms.. Lock, Stock, and two smoking barrels.. And Harvey.
I will be genuinely surprised if you put this one on a Seen It segment. Bienvenue Chez les Ch'tis by French comedian/director Danny Boon.
I would suggest watching the Original Mobile Suit Gundam movie, the first of the trilogy. For a movie that is essentialy a collection of abridged episodes from the original show with redone music and only 20 percent new footage, its surprisingly good. Probably one of my favorite anime movies of all time.
For Seen It: Have you see 'Evil Alien Conquerors'? It's a film I recommend you show your friends you no longer really want to keep
Actually, Matt: Penelope Cruz reprised her part in Abre los ojos in Vanilla Sky, so Dinklage isn't the first to do that. *starts shining with icky know-it-all hipster smugness* Have you seen those by the way, and if so, which do you prefer? I saw Vanilla Sky first and that may be why I think it's the better movie.
@curseyoujordanshow

Vanilla Sky is SO underrated.
Penelope Cruz in vanilla sky played the same role in the movie it was based off of open your eyes. They changed the name because of eyes wide shut
Matt, have you seen Clint Eastwood's (inadvertent) directorial debut in all its campy glory in The Outlaw Jose Wales?
Have you seen "Undercover Brother"? One of my all time favorite comedies that's so bad its amazing.
would you consider watching an anime movie? I would suggest watching Summer Wars it is one of many of my favorites.
This sort of gave off the 'vibe' of Paul Morrissey films like Flesh for Frankenstein or Blood for Dracula, Trash and Heat. It's like "Right, we got us some cash, 300 doses of LSD, a few bales of grass and a camera, lets go!"
The audio on this video seems to be out of sync.
Hi Craig and Matt, please, watch Departures, it's a great and beautiful japanese movie...
Since you mentioned Ong-Bak I have to ask, have you seen The Protector? If not I highly recommend it, though the film has its flaws I encourage you to watch it! If you do, try to keep in mind that Tony Jaa does all his own stunts with no wires or CGI making the incredible fight scenes all the more impressive.
I know you've probably seen it but I recommend "Moonstruck." I think it's one of Nicolas Cage's best roles..."I ain't no freakin' monument to justice!"
Don't forget to put your names somewhere in the video! Did I miss them?
