This movie has it all: smokers, mutos, a urine-purifying machine and a nice little place called Dryland. Jump in and get wet with us as we watch Waterworld.
In Seen It, we discuss other worlds: red worlds, computer worlds and worlds that eat other worlds.

Welcome To The Basement" is a show about watching, discussing and having fun with movies. Matt choses the movie and Craig doesn't know what it is until the cameras start rolling, so none of the discussion or riffing is planned ahead of time.
Movie announced on facebook before every new episode. Get the movie and follow along. We do discuss the entire movie, including the ending, so if you want to avoid spoilers, watch the movie first.

"Kevin's Gate" was the nickname for Dances with Wolves, which also had lots of production problems but turned out good.
It has been happening so slowly and gradually that I didn't notice, but Matt has lost like 100lbs!!! I only noticed cuz I went back and watched an earlier episode and was shocked at the difference. Good job Matt, I have myself lost over 100lbs since June 2014 so I know how challenging it can be.

Well I dont know whose it is but I found a hundred pounds since 2014. It doesn't have any tags or names on it though so I havent returned it to the lost and found.
This is the first movie they've done that I've seen! I actually liked this movie. Btw, they skipped over the part where they show that the island is the tip of Mt. Everest.
I can't believe they didn't mention the best line from any movie ever. When the Mariner drops the flare down the oil tank, the old man floating in a crappy boat on oil looks up and says, "Oh thank God".
Matt... I saved the flyer with the dune terms. It is in the thing we call a garage but is filled with shelves and totes. For you... And my wife... I will try to tackle some sections and find said flyer. I'll drink a beer for each tote just to make it fun... And frivolous.
Matt's Transformers story is awesome--well worth its own episode.
Last year I saw a fan cut of Waterworld which compiled the theatrical & TV versions of Waterworld into a 3 hour movie, imagine my surprise that I liked it more with all the extra footage, I'm not a huge fan and I thought it might drag. The Island at the end is Mount Everest's peak as well. I think you fellas have a spot on appraisal of the film.
Best part of the film - that awesome quad .50 cal machine gun rig at 7:20 !! P.S. Great photobomb by Tona!
My older sister took me to see this movie when it came out (I was nine at the time), and the idea that the ice caps would melt and leave us in a world like that scared the hell out of me. I had nightmares for weeks! Also, they vaguely address Shwarzenegger's Austrian-ness (or, at least his accent) in the movie Twins. To the best of my knowledge, that is the only movie.
Waterworld should have been Mad Max on the sea, but the edge is missing, and somehow the dirty look of everything seems a bit weird. Surprised Matt and Craig didn't mention the gatgets, because oh my god. I've only seen Waterworld once, but the thing i remember is ropes and levers and pulleys and gadget after gadget and mechanical apparati and how boring it got to watch all the gadgets.

monsterlair I'd like to see someone else take a stab at the basic plot. Nevermind remaking movies that are already good, remake movies that should have been good, or better than they were.

M. Wayne I agree to a certain extent. The problem with remaking a bad movie is that the name carries baggage that might be too hard to shake off.

Just use the basic plot, but have the rest be wholecloth. Then it's not a remake at all. Or just rename it.

+M. Wayne or at least make a water world game it could actually work
Lovely touch, Craig, looking into the future at the mention of "Things to Come" in Matt's introduction to the movie today. Great episode---thanks, Matt, Craig, and Tona!
"This is bullshit" -The Polar Bears
Tron. By and large, one of my favourite movies of all time. I'll never forget it.
Love these reviews ... great, as always
Love the new episode, I didn't know Joss Whedon worked on Waterworld, maybe I will check it out someday. Also YAY you read my comment. I really would've loved for it to be an episode, but I loved what you guys had to say about Tron. Thanks for making such awesome shows.
Please watch "Wait Until Dark". It is one of my father and my favorite psychological thrillers, and though it exploits the 'woman home alone' trope, I would really like to know what you both think of it! I love everything you guys do! keep up the good work!
I am from Olympia, been here since '88, and hearing Craig mention Thekla made my wife and I geek-out, it hasn't been called Thekla in ages (it's the "Big Whiskey"/now), super cool, the Capitol Theater here in Oly still shows art house, independent films and shows rare cuts of well-known films as well

That’s wonderful that the theater in your town is called the Capitol Theater. That’s the name of the former movie theater in my hometown of Belmont,Massachusetts.

Oh dear,l must correct myself-the movie theater in my hometown wasn’t called the Capitol,it was called the Studio Cinema. It’s the theater near me (in current home of Arlington,Massachusetts)that’s called the Capitol Theatre.

dcanmore Matt (or whoever puts the records up) is secretly too hip for words. Even these words!
Aw man, they didn't show the old man saying "Oh thank god" before being engulfed in flames. That was the funniest part of the movie, well intentionally funniest part of the movie anyway.
Have you seen Kung Pow Enter the Fist. It is a comedy kung fu movie woth hysterical voiceovers and some slapstick bits. For me when i watched it the first time it was The Nakes Gun but Kung Fu style. If you have seen it, go and rewatch it, i know i will
Matt- I've been on a low sugar, low complex carb diet since January. I ate a piece of birthday cake and was so lethargic afterward. If your body isn't used to it, sugar will indeed mess you up. Great review, guys! EDIT: I see that Trout Mask Replica back on the wall. Somehow, I've always had a feeling you'd be into that.
Have you seen Kevin Costner's other big budget movie The Postman? The thing that has always stuck with me about that movie is Tom Petty playing himself in the movie. Also, for the Kung-fu movie you should watch either Shaolin Soccer or Kung-fu Hustle. Both great Stephen Chow movies.
Sugar is the devil. lol on the cameo from the misses. Seen it? The Island at the Top of the World (1974)
I usually don't get the hype with Pixar/Disney movies. The Frozen/Miniom obsession makes me want to chuck. But a lot of them are okay (and a couple are pretty noteworthy). And then you have Inside Out, which is probably the best children's movie in a LONG time.

Song of the Sea is also one of the best kids films in a long time.
THIS is the kind of movie that needs a remake. Not Robocop. Not Point Break. DEFINITELY not Ghostbusters. Remake a movie like Waterworld that has an interesting concept but just misses the mark in execution.
Wow! It's funny your cold open is about drive in theatres, as the very first time I went to a drive in was to see Waterworld and Apollo 13 in Manchester, CT.
A bungie-jumpin' good episode guys! Keep 'em coming!
Just a little extra bit of info "You got the touch" was the only song they had license to in the transformer movie. So you hear it all the time, it's maddening.
Have you seen the "Weird Al" Yankovic movie UHF? I would like to hear your thoughts on the movie.
Wohoo, we got to see Tona once. Nice to see the woman that's such a great support!
Craig that's because Arnold's character in Total Recall was actually named Hauser which is a far more fitting name for someone of his ethnicity.
I wake up every morning to Dirk Diggler singing "You Got the Touch". After a year, though, I'm thinking of changing it to the human klaxon in "A Fistful of Yen"
I have fond memories of Waterworld. The first time I watched it, my best friend (at the time) and I were drinking tequila while sitting on the floor by a fire and I remember it being one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.

Shen Jones Which is why the concept of a 'bad movie' is preposterous. It always comes down to under which circumstances you have seen it.

Cléo Z exactly. Just like Batman & Robin, which was one of my favorite movies as a young child. If I watched it now, I'd think it was stupid, but back then it was just pure fun.
Well to pre-empt next week, have you guys seen Shaolin Soccer or Kung Fu Hustle? I love how they are simultaneously throwbacks to old Kung Fu flicks but with a comedic and ridiculous sensibility.
Much love from Olympia!
Like the Susan Sontag reference, and your reaction!
We went to the drive-in a couple weeks ago and it was the most fun I had at the movies in a long time, I wish I gone sooner
Waterworld.... Seen It!!! I really liked the movie back in the day, even though I was pretty young back then.
Just a heads up: you guys appear to have a stuck pixel on one of your cameras (just above Matt's right ear at 13:50; it's in the same spot in other clips too).
you guys rock.
I had the same WTF reaction when I first saw Boogie Nights in the theater... my friend and I both turned to each other and we started cracking up at the Transformers song.
a squid eating dough in a polyethylene bag is fast and bulbous, got me?
Wow Matt you look so different. Good on you. Respect
Me and my roommate and our friends went to see Inside Out at the drive in as well. No milk duds though
Memphis Recording Service! I have that t-shirt, Craig!!
Brb. Gonna bike to the store and get milk duds, then resume the video. God damn it, Matt.
FAB! as always, i reckon you should do a james bond film ;) or talk about one you've seen, a few to a kill hahaha
Waterworld is one of those movies I enjoyed when I was a kid and haven't watched since because I know I'll hate it now.

Eh, I still like it.
@ Craig: Arnie isn't the spy guy in Total Recall, it's all a dream! Notice when he enters the mind-vacation-place that a lab guy says something like "This is a new one, blue skies on Mars"! Booya. Also, a funfact: when Arnold wakes up in the auto-cab-thing, the cabbie is whistling the national anthem of Norway! Just because. Love the show!
When Tron was brought up, I thought of Lawnmower Man. Have you seen it? Seen it right when it came to VHS don't really remember it.
I did enjoy Water World. I could see a decent reboot being made at some point in the near future.
Any of the Lone Wolf and Cub movies would be great movies to watch for August Kung Fu
would love to hear your take on Waking Life (2001), it was a view changer for me
Woo can't wait! Been looking forward to seeing a kung fu movie on this :D
Kung-Fu? I hope it's Mortal Kombat Armageddon.
Trout Mask Replica! Nice!
Dear Matt & Craig, Please could you review the original Mr. Vampire for your Kung Fu episode. Truly original, super funny and martial arts moves like you've never seen before. Keep up the good work
Nice Pavement reference.
you should watch Tsumki no Ie / Maison des Petites Cubes in a short film special. Beautiful movie in the short subject.
Thumbs up for the Pavement reference, too :-)
Descendants of Tommy Bartlett!! Nice deep Sconny Dells cut
There was a transformer reference in regular show which even featured you got the touch in the background.
Also, nice Captain Beefheart in the background.
Hey Craig, Im from Olympia Washington! Its pretty cool to hear a shoutout for my (somewhat) small town. Im curious, how do you spell the name of the bar you went to?

Spencer Kelty If I recall, it's spelled Thekla. It closed some time ago. I lived in Seattle 1999-2000, and spent a lot of time visiting friends in Oly. Thekla was a massive, windowless hunk of a building. Very 70's and intimidatingly hip.
Tommy Bartlett descendants....I see what you did there bahahaha
I love Waterworld!
Have you seen The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension? I think it's one of the most underrated movies ever and in my top five.
I’ve always been curious to go to a drive-in. But none exist anywhere near I live here in SC😕
Going to a drive in during the daytime makes a man's heart stonier.
This coincidence is wild. Been subscribed since 2007. Invaders From Mars was the last episode of welcome to the basement i watched for a good while. Maybe around the same time, maybe just in the same year, i also watched Inside Out at a drive in (just outside Guelph, Ontario) and had a woozy experience with these awful edibles i made with stale ingredients. In the meantime I delved into feminist rock criticism, odd jobs, and slowly grabbing an education. Now Im back, continuing to enjoy this fantastic show as an adult.
You guys should really watch "Fantastic Planet". I would love to see your review about this artsy animated movie.
Inside Out, The Road Warrior with California problems, urifyer machines, and the Basement covers it all.
I really hope this means you'll watch A Touch of Zen next episode It's the best martial arts movie out there
I think I’ve watched Tron a couple of times but I can’t remember any of it. All I remember is Jeff Bridges playing an arcade game.
Do you guys ever cry at movies? If so, are there any specific movies or scenes that always get to you?
Have either of you seen Ex Machina? One of the best modern sci-fi movies I've seen. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. (:
This reminds me of The Postman. Kevin Costner *really* likes to direct and star in weird movies about the post-apocalypse, so it seems.
i'd looooove to hear your take on Waking Life (2001), to me it seemed almost ahead of its time
You should watch Bunraku if you haven't. It's not the best acting, but the art style of the movie is absolutely amazing.
as a kid, I liked the Transformers: The Movie...didn't love it but I did like it. As an adult, I happened to rewatch it one night and was shocked by how violent the first 20 minutes or so was and how sadistic Megatron came off as compared tot he TV cartoon.
Lmao! That one Drifter is Tig! From S. O. A.!!! Wow!!!
My big question about Waterworld: where the hell are the villains getting all those cigarettes from?! My friend grows his own tobacco and the amount of soil, fertilizer, fresh water and time it would take to grow that much would not lend itself to a setting like the world of Waterworld, even if the entire Exxon Valdez was dedicated to tobacco farming.
Nice Trout Mask Replica album. Never took you as a Beefheart type.
Matt I'm very happy for your quest to get healthy. You kind of got a shaggy from Scooby doo look going on now. But for the love of god get shirts that fit. When I saw that blanket you were wareing compared to you new psychic I though you were sick or something. But all jokes aside good on ya from a fella who walked the same path you are walking now. Cheers
The worst epidemic from the 70s was the Great Polyester Outbreak.
Everyone knows William Katt is the greatest american hero.
Have you guys seen the Peter Cushing Dr Who movie, Dr Who and the Daleks, and Dalek Invasion of Earth 2150 AD?
Waterworld wasn't actually a flop, that is a common misconception. On a $175 million budget it made $264 million in cinema box office alone. Add in video sales it made even more.
YES!!!! YOU GOT THE TOUCH!!!!!!!! THE BEST SCENE IN THE TF MOVIE!!!!!
@23:04 - the song from transformers by Marky Mark without his funky bunch, then Walburger goes on to be in a Transformers movie himself.
Wow I'm excited about the kung fu movie
I loved this movie when I was a kid. Sunday afternoon- if it was on tv I was watching it. A little girl (like me!) who got to be pals with a cool, badass and go on adventures? Yeah! haha I still like it, but your criticisms are definitely valid. ;p I think the idea of the world is beautiful. I could read novels about this place. I'm big into survival style stories. Waterworld could definitely use a reboot. :) CAN'T WAIT FOR KUNG-FU NEXT MONTH!!
College buddy of mine was actually an extra in this. Swab Boy!
yaaaay!!!! pavemental reference!!!
Have you seen the 2012 Total Recall?
Oh please watch Police Story with Jackie Chan! I Love that movie. Great action, very funny moments, cool stunts. Highly recommend!
Arnold Schwarzenegger has "kinda" alluded to "Austrian-ness" at least twice: 1) He goes off ranting in German at a team of horses in "The Villain" (seen it?). 2) Germanic rant at the beginning of "Kindergarden Cop." Now get your asses to da choppa! NOT MARS!

***** Thanks. I don't know why screenwriters just okay a basic name change when he signs on for a part. He delivers the star power, the writers can at least deliver a teutonic name.
Points for the Tommy Bartlett reference, which NO one will get unless they've been to the Wisconsin Dells.
This is one of those movies that does kinda suck yet I end up standing there watching some of it every time I see it on TV.
Kung Fu recommendations- Wheels on Meals (1984) or Black Belt Jones (1974). Come on, give one of them a try. You know you wanna. Btw, I love this show.
