Things get eerie on the ol leather couch as we witness the folk horror masterpiece The Wicker Man.
In Seen It, Matt recounts some early childhood trauma involving animated rabbits and Craig tells the story of a face to face meeting with a Mugwump.
All film footage is used in accordance with fair use and US copyright law. All music in the show is used with full permission of the composer.
Thanks for all the great comments. Keep em coming! If you watch one of the movies we discuss, let us know what you thought of it.
Welcome To The Basement" is a show about watching, discussing and having fun with movies. Matt choses the movie and Craig doesn't know what it is until the cameras start rolling, so none of the discussion or riffing is planned ahead of time.
Movie announced on facebook before every new episode. Get the movie and follow along.

8 years after watching this episode, I finally watched the movie, and even knowing the twist did not diminish the effectiveness of it. I knew where he was being lead the whole time, and watching Howie reach that conclusion was really chilling. Thanks for making this episode, it took me a while, but I never would have watched this movie at all if it hadn’t been for Welcome to the Basement.
Rest in Peace, Christopher Lee. We will miss you terribly.
Holy cap I never thought until this video that hot fuzz is basically a remake, a very well done satire of it

+jblau735.5 for being a heathen?!
I see Neil Young's Live Rust behind Craig... I approve.
Just realized...the police officer in this was the star of the 80's tv show "The Equalizer". Loved that show. Thanks so much for this program. I am loving movies I would have never thought of watching :)
The movie isn't so much "scary" as it is very disturbing. And, by the way, I love peanut butter.
When Craig is next in charge of picking the movie.. please choose watership down, he hasn't seen it. Would love to see what he thinks and also to put Matt though some Rabbit trauma flashbacks

That scarred me as a child, and I still do not want to watch it 35yrs later 😭🤪
My goodness, this is an old episode. I decided to watch the original Wicker Man for my Halloween marathon this year. I forgot how it ended but then as it ended I remembered watching this Welcome to the Basement.
I feel like The Wicker Man could function a suitable warm up/ prequel of things to see and experience in Midsommar. If you know you wouldn't be able to stomach the things done in Midsommar you can stick with Wicker Man. Or if you want to give yourself a training ground before taking the plunge to watch Midsommar, this film works for that also. The ribbon pole, rituals, and other worldly mindset in Wicker Man definitely make going from one village to the other an easy transfer until you face the deeper scenes.
Amazing film, no doubt.
7:49 "we're the gods of mischief" lol - luv it :)
I watched this and did not know what will happen. And it still wasn't a horrifying experience. Certainly a great mystery film but not a horror movie at all. At least by today's standards.
I loved watching Christopher Lee and imagining Craig playing that role with his mysterious dark eyes and sinister laugh. heh heh heah...
I saw The original Wicker man when I was a kid without knowing the ending and I found it eerie. The ending especially stuck in my mind when Howie screams "Oh God!". Maybe being a kid and having a less cynical eye helped me enjoy it more. Also I love horror movies and I wonder if you've seen "Cujo". It's rarely mentioned but a great horror film.
Oh thank goodness, I was worried this was going to be the Nick Cage version.
I heard that she only agreed to do topless, and the filmmaker brought in a body double to do the bottomless scenes and she was pissed. Both could be true.

I always have a body double do my bottomless scenes, even with my significant other! 💕 W2TB - I've listened to a season and a half in the past 3 days Peanut butter is awful and Reese's is not chocolate. Reese is the Uwe Boll of chocolatiers - A. Foreigner
If your wondering about the hand candle it is known as a "Hand Of Glory" it was made usually from a the dried pickled hand of a hanged man who committed a murder. The idea was that the burning fumes would cause fumes to keep a person asleep.
Y'all are the best. I love learning about new movies and even revisiting old movies i havent seen in a long time. Keep it up!
I finally watched this last year and one thing I never realized from this video is just how much music is in this movie. Its practically a musical, at least for part of it. Pretty cool, really unique film.
best.movie.ever! My husband has been trying to get me to watch Welcome to the Basement for forever, and this is the first time I actually took the time out to do it because I've probably watched The Wickerman 20 times this May because I'm awesome. Usually I just hear the voices of the hosts from my husband's laptop as he watches this show on the other side of the room, so I'll just say you dudes look nothing like I imagined you would.
This show has me caught in trance during the movie footage, and when you start discussing the movie!
This is the first time I've seen this show (?) format and I loved it. I always tend to like review shows, but your methods are really entertaining and informative. I've always meant to watch the original Wicker Man, along with plenty of other classics, but it was spoiled when I saw the remake.
Another great episode. Thanks
I love that you guys did Wicker Man :) Though WttB has never disappointed, this was an exceptionally enjoyable episode. Thank you again guys, have a marvelous rest of the week
OMG YES. Now I cannot unsee Craig Johnson as Dwight Frye xD
Hey guys, loved the episode as always!
I was so hoping to see this on the show!
I must have missed that version. As a huge Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds fan, I must rectify this immediately.
The way in which Craig eats that peanut butter cup makes me tingle.
Live Rust in the background makes me happy
i am so happy you guys are watching the original! i just found a michael shannon movie on our movie channels called, "take shelter", i set it up to record because of all the michael shannon love on this show
Hey! I got a Seen It-comment on the show! How nice!
Jesus Christ, this movie is a lot better then I was ever expecting when I first saw it. Its got an amazing build up and rather then horror, its all tension. One of my favorites.
I can't believe you didn't show the end credits screen, that immediate cut to the red? Fucking effective.
The best Episode of your show.
I can't decide whether to watch the films you're watching before or after I watch your videos. So far, I can't resist watching your videos first! Also, how about some Bunuel?
I hear you Matt! Watership Down was mental and I watched it waaayyyy too young! Trauma!
I have Apple Cropland!, thanks Matt I wont sacrafice anyone.... for now.
I gather that you guys, or at least Matt, have seen all that Monty Python has to offer. Do you have a favorite movie or show from them? BTdubs, your show has exposed me to so many films and I thank you for it.
I just realised i haven't thanked you guys for watching The Wicker Man. I suggested it early in the first season, and i really enjoyed the episode. You seemed to get a bit of a kick out of it, even if you didn't consider it a great film. My wish was fulfilled. Now i can just lean back in my own leather couch and watch you tear Armageddon a new one. Oh, and seen it: Ravenous?
I think it's the strangeness in singing is what made this film special.
I just realized something, hot fuzz is basically what would happen if he got away and came back for revenge, now I just love hot fuzz all the more now, and I didn't even think that was possible :D
And of course, you guys are awesome.
Of course it got the recognition it deserved, it was by Tim burton and featuring Johnny depp! It was an instant classic!
Glad you did this one, I've only ever seen the modern one. Actually, I decided to take a group of foreign exchange students to the movies, and somehow or another, decided on that Nicolas Cage train wreck. Long story short, to this very day, I am filled with regret when I think about how horribly I started off those poor foreigner's entry into American Cinema. They had no way of seeing it coming.
St. Elmo's Fire is something you have to review!! just hysterical!
I remember Watership Down. My dad got it for my little sister who was around 7 at the time and she was really into bunnies so my dad thought it would be great for her. After we watched it, my little sister turned to my dad and with a stone cold straight face said "I don't like bunnies anymore."
Always loved this film. Differently, as I've aged. Initially just revelling in the non-christian-ness of it, later appreciating the traditions represented. These days I smirk at an island of numpty pagans as much as the copper, wince at the accents and enjoy the performances. One note, Woodward's final line is repeated as his final line in Hot Fuzz.
It's amazing
When I saw this film, I didn't know the ending of the film.
You went to movie madness I bet! It's a local favorite here in Portland. The guy who owns it collects original movie props and costumes and puts them on display in his video store.
Friday night treat: Put 2 cans of your favourite beer and a big beer glass into your freezer for 20 mins Run yourself a hot bath Put your laptop on a chair next to it about 2ft away Load up a Welcome To The Basement playlist Get a bowl of crisps and some chocolate, put them on a chair next to the laptop Pour one can of your beer into the frozen glass Get into the bath Click "Play" You. Are. Welcome.
YES I'VE SEEN IT.
Have you seen The Mist? I think its Thomas Jane's greatest movie and has one of the most gut-wrenching endings I've ever seen
i just love the way craig says we're all gonna die!
Yep
Wow, I actually want to see this now.
That video store in Portland, OR is Movie Madness Video and More. It's still there, and has even more stuff now. They've got the ear from Blue Velvet.
How better to see if a person is "pure" than by whether or not they resist great temptation.
If you haven't seen it, watch Wong Kar-wai's 1997 film Happy Together. It's immensely beautiful.
I think for the next Seen It segment you should only list off movies with remakes where you have seen one version of the movie but not the other.
I loved the original Wicker Man. Such a fantastic and creepy movie.
i actually didnt know the endjng i was like damn! That wicker man had to take forever to build and they just burn it down. Not to mention he didnt seem to put up much of a fight when they were going to burn him alive!
Yeah, that seemed weird to me. Why risk ruining the sacrifice? Maybe they were testing his resolve, or they knew he would resist because of their "research" and were just messing with him.
Craig looks more and more like an old-time vampire, like Nosferatu before he lost his hair.
reading lyrics from the LED ZEPPL;IN album,i own that vinyl too.are all those records behind Matt?
great movie!
Wow Matt lost weight!
Hey! Have you guys seen Amadeus?! Love the show!
Yes?
Building a 'Henge are we? That's fantastic!
when i watched The Wicker Man i knew nothing about it. the movie was disturbing to me and the feeling i had after watching it is still with me a little bit about 20 years later. i'm reluctant to watch it again because i'd prob laugh at it now and i'd rather remember how i felt back then
Great show guys, as always! If you want a see an even creepier movie than "The Wicker Man" that's somewhat in the same setting, try Who Can Kill a Child? (1976) "¿Quién puede matar a un niño?"... Very weird movie that takes place on a small island where children have taken over and seem to be possessed by Evil. An english couple arrives there and... well, you'll see. Saw this when I was way too young, and it is still with me!...
So I watched in anticipation of this episode and I was really impressed by the film's respect for Christianity. The Officer was a prick but his faith seemed true to the times and he held it to the end. I love the one song that "the land lord's daughter" sings the first night. It has some how ended up on my Ipod. I had no idea what would happen at the end and did not see the twist coming. I did not find it at all Horror-ish. Definitely a watchable film.
I suspect the Mugwup in Portland was at Movie Madness, which is STILL open!
Aw man, the Nicholas Cage remake NEEDS to be watched for an episode... it's like a rite of passage in cinema.
Watch Time Bandits
Hello from France! I really enjoy your show. Here are some movies you could review unless you've seen them already : birth of a nation (silent b&w racist movie), one of Jacques Demy movies (the umbrellas of cherbourg, les demoiselles de rochefort : french 1960's musicals), mr. Nobody (with Jared Leto). Thanks again for your show.
ohh next episodes on my birthday :) I know what I will be doing then sweet !
This is very Lovecraftian you know? It's like the Shadow over Innsmouth the "evil conspiratory town" thing. It's good.
Our film festival here in traverse city is becoming quite the event. I saw Chen Kaige's "the promise" a couple years ago at our fest and found it to be quite enjoyable and a visual feast. Have you seen it? If not add it to the list.
Yeah and it won academy awards and everything, which is why it bothers me whenever I'll mention it to people and then 9/10 times the response I get is that they either never heard of it or were aware that it was a thing, but had never actually seen it themselves.
I'm a forner and I love peanut butter. Frankly I'm surprised to hear that other forners don't like the stuff.
A man bursts through the wall. "Hide me their coming!! THEY SHOW NO MERCY NO VISON ONLY HATRED" he runs behind Matt. "who is chasing you?" "...." "hn?" "It's..." bzzzzzzz "the bees...THE BEES OH NOT THE BEES AHARGHHHHSHSHHSSHHH!!!"
Meeting Evil. Watched it last night on NetFlix, if you guys haven't seen it check out that crazy film. Starring: Samuel L Jackson and Owen Wilson.
Awesome episode as ever! Have either of you caught Martin Scorsese's "After Hours" (1985)? In it, Griffin Dunne looks like a long lost relative of Craig’s. If you haven’t caught it, it would be interesting to hear the two of you review one of the rare comedies Scorsese has directed.
Great review guys. I would like to know if you have seen any star trek movies? If so which was your favorite.
Do any of you guys attend Duck Soup Cinema? It's three times a year at the Overture center, and they show silent movies and have a sort of vaudeville show before the movie.
Hey guys you should see Beneath hill 60, love the show!
Have you guys seen Bernie? Fantastic black comedy, and it shows that in the right situation, Jack Black is a great actor.
Couldn't agree more on watership down
I just saw House or Housu as per your recommendation, and all i have to say is "YOU'RE SO COOL KUNG FU!". Any way have you guys seen The Killing, it's one of Kubrick's earlier films. It is a great piece of film noir and my favorite movie by Stanley Kubrick.
I keep meaning to go
Wow matt has lost a lot of weight since this episode. Congrats, matt!
You really need to go and watch the last few episodes, they mention meet the feebles at least twice, though perhaps not the way you'd like them to ^^
Hey Matt, I saw this film about 20 years ago, not knowing the ending. It seemed a battle of Lawful Good vs True Neutral (in the same way Batman:The Dark Knight was a battle of Lawful Good vs Chaotic Evil).
