Craig and Matt waited until their parents went to bed before they watched this X-rated 70s gem. What is the movie? Watch and find out, but don't tell your Mom.
For Seen It, we revisit the Bottle Movie, discussing Men from Earth, Angry men, Men on tape and a little Canadian town called Pontypool.
All film footage is used in accordance with fair use and US copyright law. All music in the show is used with full permission of the composer.
Thanks for all the great comments. Keep em coming! If you watch one of the movies we discuss, let us know what you thought of it.
Welcome To The Basement" is a show about watching, discussing and having fun with movies. Matt choses the movie and Craig doesn't know what it is until the cameras start rolling, so none of the discussion or riffing is planned ahead of time.
Movie announced on facebook before every new episode. Get the movie and follow along. We do discuss the entire movie, including the ending, so if you want to avoid spoilers, watch the movie first.

You have to feel badly for Crumb's brother, Charles. He committed suicide after the film was made. Both men were basically, well, mentally unique. All the people in Crumb's family appear to be artists. And I really hated Fritz the Cat, but Crumb was a very interesting film. I do not agree with Robert Crumb's politics at my current age. He has the same political leanings I did, when I was in college. I'm surprised he's not grown out of it, but, well, he's unique.

I strongly disagree. Fritz the Cat was a product of its times, but I can hardly say it was entertaining or enjoyable to watch. I would say reading a synopsis of it is enough. It's essentially ONLY notable for being an X rated cartoon film. I saw it 30 years ago merely because of this, but it was entirely forgettable and unenjoyable.

I think in western culture, animations are just so associated with comedies. Even in semi serious western animations there is comedic relief for no other reason to just have it in there. At least that's what I see when people always associate animations with comedies.

Fritz the Cat is a horrible movie to go into blindly. It's a huge product of its time. I could talk about Bakshi all day as he is my favorite director. Knowing that he came from working for Disney and this was his first feature film changes so much about the "humorless" cartoony qualities. Their one good point is about the pool-scene death of Duke. It was definitely done better in Bakshi's next film, Heavy Traffic.

I agree. Plus, a lot of what Matt and Craig were criticizing were things that the movie was borrowing from the comic, like the lack of story, the joylessness, etc. These were deliberate, so you can't rightfully say that they were errors.

We really need a Blu-Ray of this film, seeing that MGM dvd is long out of print. Maybe Shout! Factory could give us a proper special edition Blu-Ray. Haters be damned, I actually love this movie for it's sheer outlandishness. How often have you seen a full on cat orgy on film? You haven't. Except for this film. This is film that is only funny after you've had a bit of wacky tabaky. Then, it's a revelation. Fritz's constantly trying to fit in, his failed ambition, his dropping out of college. In my opinion, and I may be reaching here, but I think the movie is great, because it's really about a college kid who's bored, confused and also, a bit of a sociopath.

As someone who lived through the sixties, Fritz the Cat is absolutely the best depiction of the time period. It's better than Easy Rider, The Graduate or Bob and Ted and Carol and Alice. Hippies, intellectuals, Blacks, cops, revolutionaries... they're all there.

My mom and dad also lived through the sixties and they also thought it depicted the period fairly well... They also thought it was a worthless p.o.s. as far as entertainment value goes. I didn't live through the sixties, but I am still upset to have had my time so badly used. I found it insulting that the makers thought they had made a movie worth charging people to see. Having said that, you have your right to your opinion. That's my real point. Neither of us has proven anything. We've just voiced an opinion. The only error that we can possibly have made is thinking we have proven anything.🤷‍♂️ (Walden DOESN'T have a plot. It isn't a "plot" book.)

Matt, your gift of Felix the Cat and the remark of eyes going back and forth is interesting, because it made me think of the clock you are referring to. However, those clocks, although in many ways resemble Felix the cat, they are not Felix the Cat clocks! I learned this the hard way when looking for said clock on ebay and not finding what I was after. In a related search however, kit cat clocks showed up, and I was delighted to learn that the kit cat clock company is still in operation and still making new clocks. I purchased one right then in there to bring a bit of simple joy into the house, as his little eyes dart back and forth.

Conspiracy (2001) is a very fine bottle movie dramatising the Wannsee Conference, a meeting of the 3rd Reich in a stately home in suburban berlin, that set in place some of the worst outrages of WW2. Chilling mix of the mundane and the unspeakable (being unspoken by some our best british talent. If you've ever been in a boardroom, production meeting, (or were a member of the 3rd reich), you'll get disgusted-at-mankind-douche-chills all over. Masterful. Also i love the show.

Ugh. Guys, there's social-symbolism of the late '60s in EVERY scene and is autobiographical to Bakshi, especially the crow always "stuck behind the 8 ball" trying so hard but the "white" Fritz has it easy, then only freedom by way of death, the table a metaphor for life. Please reconsider! Like Monty Python, just a series of vignettic metaphors. It was not supposed to be funny or a comedy. It was a social statement.

Or could it be both, much like the source material? And to be fair, the premise is about seeing a film that on if not both have not seen. So I can see why the review may not be that in depth as it could be. I do agree that doing a little research on Bakashi himself would have given them a bit more insight as to why the characters were portrayed the way they were.......and I won't advise them to watch Bakashi's Coonskin if they were not so happy with Fritz. I will point out again that research would possibly make these reviews a little more entertaining. Don't get me wrong. I love this program, but I do get a bit frustrated when I see obvious things that could be shared with the audience, as well as the obvious being important to their own assessment. With that in mind, I guess it wouldn't hurt for them to strengthen their knowledge as to the film they happen to be showing. They have left out some pretty obvious stuff when reviewing certain classics. Pitney Swope comes to mind when they didn't recognize Huggy Bear playing a size able part . Other than that, I dig what they do

I was excited at first when I heard the title of the film. We have some first editions of Fritz the Cat atthe bookstore I work at. Thank you for preventing me from wanting to watch this movie myself. For something funny and French if you haven't seen it, check out Les Visiteurs. It stars Jean Reno in a comedic role long before the remake of The Pink Panther.

I love how Craig gets so visibly angry whenever he’s subjected to a bad movie. He’s such a lover of the art of film he considers it sacrilege to make one poorly

Hey guys, love the show. Recently watched "Murder by Death" per your mention of it on the show. Have to say, pretty much a poor man's Clue if you ask me. Also, I can't stop randomly saying "Bela Lugosi's dead. Undead. Undead. Undead" to my girlfriend, I get very confused looks. Thanks a lot!!!

I would love to see you guys do a television Seen It! You've mentioned a few shows every once and a while (particularly a few HBO shows), what are some of your favorites? I think The Wire and The Sopranos were both equally two of the greatest shows on television.

Matt, one of your digital cameras has a dead pixel in the optical sensor. I've looked at the video several times with different browsers and different computer monitors and noticed it every single time. It's the camera that you used to record the image of yourself in this particular video.

I'm 19 and not such a cinephile, so I don't usually watch old movies (i.e. from before 1990), but I saw 12 Angry Men (1957) with my brother and absolutely *loved* it.

Great episode. You probably won't do another item on bottle movies, but one I think you missed out on is the original Sleuth, with Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine. Haven't seen the remake, but the original is superb, I think. Before seeing it, I didn't understand all the fuss about Olivier. Now I do.

I really think the film was more aimed for a certain group of people to enjoy, rather than intelligently criticized.
