So… when you putting a C3.6 in that bad boy?
Can you do a smoke test
My dad had a chevy with a 6.0 gas that had a tick from a valve lifter. Everyone said run it so he did until it started to loose oil pressure. Turned out out was a failed o ring in the oil sump and air was being introduced and that caused the lifter tick
Seems like a low oil pressure and flow since it should be blowing oil all over the top end running for more then a few seconds. I'd also look at that loose spark plug on the passanager side. Noise went away when the valve cover was off possibly because that cylinder wasn't firing at that point.
Fairly certain that every GM 5.3 makes that ticking noise.
I agree with you my friend... how bout in a pinch on the side of the road with no electricity or soldering iron... I would certainly use these in a pinch if I had them in my vehicle.. just to get myself or a friend home... and fixed correctly after that
Where's the oil when it's running, should be some splashing.
Mine is a gas motor but one side of exsaust is 150 degrees hotter one side than other like right side colder could be o2 or fuel cross over or fuel rails but don’t have any idea why
THATS HAD IT BUT STILL CHEEP.
Cam? Rod knock? 😂😂😂
I loved your joke about "lets shut the garage door and let it run a while and that should fix all my problems" because lately i feel like that's my life. Everything needs attention 😆. Having said that, i would suspect oil pump. That top end is way too dry imo. It seems to be the LS based engines weak falls for whatever reason. Usually the relief spring/plunger. My bud has been through 3 oil pumps on his camaro (6.2)
What kind of engine oil are you using. Try a full synthetic from natural gas.
Josh, I’ve read a lot of the comments and I’m done Mechanic by any means, but I would think it has something to do with that high-pressure pump. I do not like things that are ticking inside my motor either that drives me absolutely insane. Hope everything works out.👍👍👍
in the Uk there is loads of break in on service vans when you stay at hotels does that happen in US
Stethoscope bro, your best friend for noises like this in automotive.
Sounds like the high pressure fuel pump. That piece of foam is for sound deadening, so customers stop complaining about ticking noises. They really are very noisy. I suppose it helps a little less when you sit right on top of the engine in a van application.
Hold me closer to that ticking noise at the back so I can tell you that's what it is from this side of the keyboard👌🏼
My 1990 Toyota pickup starting ticking years ago. I did the same things you did but also checked timing chain. Could not find anything wrong. So I just drive it. Figured if it pukes then it pukes. So far it has been about 7 years and it still ticks loudly every so often but it is still going. Your case is a little different as it is your work vehicle.
I guess the old “what’s that noise?Turn the radio up it’s a company vehicle” doesn’t apply when it’s your company lol
This is why I don't care for the Ls engine pull head to get to tappets. Not saying it's not a good engine just prefer the older v8s
do relative compression test , them manual one, injector was moving up and down wore out the seal of the injector,a reseal kit has white gromit that hold the injector down tighter
Cam and lifters
Would it be possible to relocate IVA on a C15?
number 6 injectoer seal was blown out it was losing commpression on veh in fleet i worked on
At 13:53, you ran the engine. Shouldn't we be seeing a lot more motor oil flowing down and around the rockers and valves? It seems too dry to me. And you'd certainly expect a lot of ticking from an under-lubricated valve train.
I'm having a hard time finding the injector hold down bolts. Where can I find them for a C13? Also what will happen if I don't set the intake and exhaust heights and just torque the bolts?
I totally understand your frustration. I was the fleet mechanic for a construction that ran all Chevy trucks with 6.0L enigines. One day a truck was brought in for a "squeak". I automatically went to the serpentine belts and related components, but nothing looked wrong with that system. I even removed the serpentine belts and ran the engine, but the "squeak" was still present. When I would go underneath the vehicle with the engine running it seemed like it was from between the engine and transmission. I removed the transmission and ran the engine with the serpetine belts off and the noise was still present. At that point I determined that I had to tear down the engine and found that one of the rollers from one of the lifters was ceased and was not "rolling" and making the noise. I after I went through all the trouble of tearing down half of the engine and putting back together, I realized that we should have bought a crate motor for it.
Seems like there should be more oil to the rockers than that.
You have no oil flow on the passenger bank, you can't see oil flowing like on the driver side.
😎👍
Good Luck Josh i admire your skills the videos are super you have what it takes to succeed at your new venture
You’re not getting any oil to the top of the engine
I have definitely heard some quite noisy direct injection gasoline engines here in the UK you could well think they were faulty especially on a cold idle.
Lockdown lifter created by active fuel management system GM
After driving vans for years and years for work and then my own business, it was time for a change. I was looking at panel vans ( bread truck vans) that would be about the length of an extended van. There is room to stand up in them. Room for a work bench, a generator, a heater for the winter time....Overall more space and the cummins 5.9 gets better mpg than the engine I had. The aluminum body won't rust away, which is a real problem in the midwest. And if you don't mind the insurance for a CDL truck, you can find used utility panel trucks with air compressors and generators with low miles.
Josh don’t trust the oil pressure gauge on the dash. Those rockers should have a nice steady stream of oil coming out of them. Should even splash all over like the old gasser’s you worked on. Oil pressure problem is my bet.
just wear ear plugs while driving and go make $$$$$$$$$$$$
Made those engines, and not sure when that one was made, but we did have issues with fuel pumps, for a short while🤷🏼♂️
Check T.S.B. s Maybe there is a technical service bulletin about that issue . lifter, Oil , timing chain.
They all tick!!
Thanks Josh! Extremely informative video. 😊
Check the flex plate for cracks, and I did see the oil.
I didn't see any oil from the push rods.
Just an observation at 10 minutes in. Why aren't the valve rockers being oiled. The cylinder head is as dry as a bone and for a high mileage vehicle it's too clean?
if its like the v8s the exhaust manifold may be loose. v8s bolts break.
This is a very nice setup! It a good idea to have the compressor for those just incase times. You’ve got it stocked well and still have room to work on something small inside out of the weather if needed
It's a sticky push rod lifter getting a lack of oil. My 07 Silverado has the same condition. I run her in second gear to get her warmed up and the oil moving (I've switched to 10w30) once my truck is good and hot the ticking stops. Is what it is and it is a Chevy thing😞. I did see a guy pull the rods and shoot brake cleaner down the port, it did bust up whatever was down there and solved his tick. Probably be doing the same here sometime.
It is a chevy
You going to find out that the common problem with the ls engines did they have problems with the displacement on demand DOD the lifters go bad and the roller breaks up!!!!!!
It's DOD common Chevy ate up cam common Chevy displacement on demand lifter is totally screwed!
